I just got my surgery date for July 12th at 10AM. I'm so freaking excited!
  2. Thanks
laurenantics reacted to catwoman7 in Sleeve long term
stand alone sleeve isn't that old. It was just becoming popular when I got my RNY six years ago - it was becoming the non-RNY replacement for the lapband. It'd been around longer than that, but I don't think much.
if you want longer-term stats, maybe research the DS (duodenal switch). The DS is an old surgery, and it uses a sleeved stomach. In fact, that's where they got the idea for the standalone sleeve. The DS used to be done in two stages (usually - not always). They do a sleeved stomach and then later go back in and bypass the small intestine (now most DS's are done in one surgery). They discovered that a lot of people lost weight with just the phase 1 (sleeved stomach), so they started offering that as a standalone surgery.

Mine is the 12th, too. Today some dread creeped in. I’m skerd. But not enough to not follow through.

Mine is July 15 and I am getting anxious as well. I am just remembering why I am doing this and trying to focus on the positives, but sometimes I have moments of panic. Are you doing anything special to remain focused and calm?
  6. Congrats!
laurenantics reacted to loridee11 in 18 months post RNY
I am just over 18 months post RNY surgery and am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity for this tool, and glad I made the decision to do it. Even with everything going on in the world today, I am feelling happier and healthier than I have in a long time.
I am 5'10, just turned 43 year old women (41 at time of surgery). Highest weight was 334, day of surgery 292, today I am maintaining right around 160. So many non scale victories, but a few of my favorites:
    - I have a ton more energy. I used to fall asleep on the couch after work most nights, and weekends I did errands and chores and rarely had the energy for much else. Now, I use my evenings to chores and save my weekends for hiking or other fun activities.
    - My knees and ankles don't hurt. Before, just walking around the block meant pain, and my knees ached everyday (arthritis). Now, I walk between 1.5-2 miles almost every day and rarely have any pain. I can even do yoga poses like child's pose as I'm gaining flexibility back.
    - I am out enjoying life more. I have always loved hike, but even when my weight wasn't as high I had a hard time as I was out of shape. Now, I hike most weekends, going 10+ miles and 2K elevation gain without a problem. Last weekend, at the top of a pretty steep hill my heart rate was still below 100! As the world reopens I feel more comfortable going to restaurant's (chairs are so much more comfortable!) and I'm sure other activities will be easier too.
    - I started a new job in April, and hadn't met anyone in person. We had lunch the other day and I wasn't self conscious and worried that they'd be judging me for my weight.
    - I can fit into cute and stylish clothes. I'm still figuring out what works on my new body, but I can go into little shops and they actually have things that fit! I'm generally a S top and 8-10 in bottoms.
I do have some work to do to clean up my diet. I've slipped a little in the last couple of months and need to get back to eating healthier before it starts impacting my progress. My goal is to not have to hyper focus on food and do regular meal planning with healthy foods and just eat until I am full. Hopefully, coupled with exercise that will help me maintain.
    Thanks for letting me share.

laurenantics reacted to blackcatsandbaddecisions in How much more are you planning to lose??
Ok I know I’m being petty but I’m feeling petty today so here goes. So far I’ve lost 150 lbs and I’ve decided this is how the comments from coworkers/acquaintances goes:
    1-50 lbs: nothing
50-100 lbs: have you lost weight? Keep it up!
100-125 lbs: wow you are looking great what’s your secret?
125+ lbs: said in a disbelieving voice “how much more weight are you planning to lose? Aren’t you done yet?

I know that this is a problem that is great to have in the sense that a year ago I would have given anything to be this weight so please don’t take it that I’m not happy about losing or that I feel like people shouldn’t comment. But I’m still overweight, and regardless of if I was a normal weight or overweight or heck if I was obese I am getting tired of people making comments like I don’t have the autonomy to determine my own goal weight. And realistically it’s been so long since I was a normal size I honestly have no idea what my true goal would be because I will know it when I get there (hopefully!)

I tend to make a lot of jokes so I’ve just started saying really implausible amounts (I want to lose 200 lbs more and be lighter than air, I want to hit my birth weight of 9 lbs again and get back into my going home from the hospital outfit, etc) but in my head all I can think of is please stop commenting on my body for five minutes thanks.

anyway this is a first world problem I am well aware, and I know I’m just being salty but here I am.

@Seija For me, I'm tasked with losing 25 pounds before surgery. Also, since I have to take a little time off of work to heal, I'm kicking my A$$ at work because I'm on commission. So, I'm hustling as hard as I can to make up for the lost time in July.
Also, in addition to researching I've been "nesting" and purchasing things I'll need for post op - such as Vitamins, Bone Broth, Protein Shakes, gas x... I'm hoping to be 100% prepared so there are no surprises.

I guess each hospital is different. My surgery was scheduled for 10:15 am so I finished drinking at 8:15 and then my surgery was pushed back until 5:15 pm. Once I got the compression socks on and the iv set up they came in and talked to me and I don't remember anything else except waking up in my room because they were slapping me lol!
I took PJs but ended up staying in the gown they provided and the socks. They did not make me walk around other than going to the toilet. I had a wonderful night. I would have liked to have stayed longer but it wasn't necessary. I showered as soon as I got home and rested and walked the rest of that day. You will do just fine. Alot of this is being able to follow directions ie do what they tell you to do. Don't rush things. Take something for a sore throat if they allow it.
    All the best to you!

My surgery was on 6/17. I wore the nightgown provided as the hospital did not allow me to bring many items. I did have an IV overnight. Once out of recovery and in my room I had to start drinking 4 ounces of Water every hour. The nurses are vigilant in making sure you do this. They wake you up to make sure you do this!! They helped me to the restroom with my IV bag in the middle of the night. But in the morning because I drank my fluids they discontinued my IV bag which was more than half empty. I was up by 5:30 am and started walking the nurses station by myself still had the IV bag but by 7am they removed it and did so almost every hour. I did shower and dressed in my going home clothes which were the same comfy clothes I wore coming to the hospital. I drank Water all day long the day before surgery No food and 8oz of Gatorade at 11 pm the night before and 2hrs before arrival with meds prescribed by the doctor. I took my phone and charger along with my headphones which I never used. The only thing I did use was the lib balm so make sure you take lip balm. No time for music or talking on the phone. Your busy drinking, peeing and walking. Good luck with your surgery and with the new chapter you are about to embark on.

@laurenantics I had my surgery 6/8. I was not to change into my own nightgown if I wanted, but I actually just put shorts on under their gown and put a robe over to walm around. I had an iv in until discharge. To walk around I had to push the iv pole with me. I did no shower bc I was only there over night, but showered as soon as I got home. I drank slot of Water prior to surgery. The morning of surgery the surgeon required me to drink a regular 20oz Gatorade 2 hrs before arrival. Good luck to you! It’s not easy, but definitely worth it! Your asking great questions!
