This happened to me with fluids, it would not go down. The reflux, heartburn were so painful I would throw up. Not to mention I was severely dehydrated, it was awful. I had a scan that showed the Fluid stuck literally in my throat. They said this was very dangerous because it can go into the lungs and I went into surgery days later, right in the middle of the pandemic when hospitals only took emergency cases, last July. I was so scared, everyone in the hospital was paranoid as was I. My surgeon looked like an astronaut he was so covered up when he performed the surgery. I had to mention this because that showed how incredibly dangerous the lap band can be.
And that is where the nightmare began. I had this weight so under control that I truly felt I would never put on the weight again. Exercising daily, eating very healthy, I really thought this was it. No more struggles after 10 years of keeping it under control. And then in one year, it all came back and then some. I remember my surgeon saying, most people have a revision to remove scar tissue and then have the sleeve done to keep the weight under control. Who could have known that this would be so incredibly hard? It was devastating. If I knew then what I know now I would have done it even thinner because this is, for me anyway's, a way of life. I must always try and try hard to stay on the path of mindful eating and exercising.
Day 16 post op 13lbs weight loss
    Started bike riding.
I had mine on the 26th and have lost 13 lbs. I am so excited !!!!! i have the go-ahead to exercise but I am not really eating so I am being careful. so excited to start this next chapter. It was impossible for me to lose 13 lbs before, I feel so much better knowing the weight is finally starting to come off!

27 lbs is a lot, it’s tremendous, your body is in shock and getting used to its new system. Give your self a break. Almost 30 lbs in less than a month !

    I think that is amazing.
  5. Thanks

Thank you so much everyone for your responses. The closer I get to surgery (May 10th), the happier I am that I didn't make the decision to tell anyone -- except for my mom as she is my emergency contact. And OMG, she is driving me nuts with the phone calls and texts.
    Yes mom, I'm sure.
Yes mom, I'm still getting it done.
    No mom, you stay home.
Yes mom, I know that I am not just going to wake up after surgery and be skinny!
Thank you Mom but No, I don't need your mother's sister-in-law's recipe for broth.

This time next week I'll be 3 days post op. Crazy to finally say that!

I am 3 weeks post op and this weekend I did everything wrong. My husband and kids took me to a resort. I had half an alcoholic drink per day and I had some solids, tomatoes and a bite of lobster, but I chewed forever. I had no issues.

I was expecting to get sick but I didn’t. I did this twice and now I am going back to my comfort zone. Only going to have one Soup per day and my trusted Protein Shakes. I had lost 14 lbs but I will not weigh myself for a few days. I do not want to get depressed if I went up.

I knew this would be a struggle. Gastric sleeve is only a tool to get you where you want to go. Real changes have to happen anf now I know how I gained the weight. 60lbs in 1 year. I am shocked it wasn’t more.

It is so difficult to understand but the body went through major shock. If I have learned anything from these forum is that everyone’s experience is very different and in some instances, almost the same. You have to give it a little time. Before you know it 20 lbs will be off
and it will be the start of something great.

And what is wrong with looking good ? Mental health counts. There are many people who have no medical issues from being overweight does that disqualifies them from a life free of excess weight via gs, not fair. A perfect argument that not telling anyone is the best way. My family was fully supportive with 60 lbs excess. They understood. I did this for me. I did this because whether I live 5 days , 5 months , or 50 years, I want to do it on my terms. Feeling good and looking by best.

Agreed! Nothing wrong with wanting to look/feel good (and that being the only reason for some.......I WISH that was my only concern) but my sister was concentrating on that ONLY when I was clearly trying to tell her the newly discovered diabetes, high BP, Insulin Resistance, PCOS, years of no diets and gym working, and fear of any future issues is what I was MORE worried about at this time. FOR ME. Like in one ear and out the other with her. LOL But yeah, not gonna tell anyone else for sure. HAHA

I feel like you. I am 52 and I hope the weight will come off although I know I will have to work hard. It is definitely the age. I wish I would have done it 20 lbs earlier when the weight was just piling on and I knew steroids, perimenopause, etc... would hinder that weight loss. I purchased the Street Rider that can be left in place and is a great workout, google. I hope and pray that at the 2-week mark I can start and not hurt myself. It is very safe and if money is a concern they have a payment plan. Just an FYI. might help.

Thank you for this post. I am so happy finally someone has the guts to say what so many wishes were not true. People do become uncomfortable when you start losing weight for real. A little background. I had a lap band until serious complications caused me to have surgery during COVID. I put on 45 lbs on top of the already 15 I needed to lose. I went to graduation where I had family and friends shockingly stare at me. Now I am losing again and the 12 lbs since 4/26/21 have made a difference, you can see it. Not enough but something is something. I guess they were always used to seeing me so put together that the moment they saw me fall off the bandwagon they felt more comfortable. It was sad but I ignored it and went into surgery two days later. I cannot wait for them to see me in 3 months when, I hope, a little more has come off and after a year, when I hope to be where I want to be. I had one guy say to me, " well, you were always on the heavier side anyways." Can you imagine, what a ......

ShanIamVA, I only told one person, a very close friend who lives in another state. Other than that, I told no one. I did tell a few people that I was having surgery, but was not specific. My sister kindly brought me to and from the hospital and stayed a few days with me, but she also did not know the specifics of my surgery. I am by nature a very private person, anyway, so it was not out of character to keep my surgery private. I realize everyone has a different journey, but you are not alone in your desire to keep your personal business to yourself. This forum has been invaluable, as well as some Youtube videos following the journeys of other VSG-ers.
For some reason, my loss has been very slow, not sure if it's my age, 60, and lower starting weight, but I haven't had a "shocking" transformation that requires explanation.
I wish you all the best in your journey.

you're having this surgery for yourself, not for others, so why feel guilty? Plus it's a medical/health issue and therefore as private as you want to make it. You wouldn't feel obligated to tell people all the details of your latest colonoscopy, so why feel that way about weight loss surgery?
I told my immediate family and some of my close friends. My boss also knew. I didn't tell anyone else. I didn't need negativity in my life. I still told very few people after the fact. When people asked me how i lost weight, I'd tell them I was working with a dietitian and living at the gym. Which was basically true - I just left out one detail - that I'd had surgery. Never-been-fat people tend to believe that. I was more open with other obese people, because of course they'd know that was a bunch of schlock.
I'm more open about it now that I'm normal-sized and a few years out - although then again, it rarely ever comes up at this point. Almost everyone has already seen me at a normal weight (so the shock is long gone), or else they never knew me when I was obese.
the decision to tell or not tell is totally up to you. If you're not comfortable telling, then don't. You don't owe anyone any explanation.
  21. Congrats!

I totally agree !!!! and I am doing the same. But for my husband, daughter, and surgeon, no one knows. I usually tell no one anything because I come from a BIG, loving, judgemental with loving intentions family, and I didn't want to hear it. I had lap band and I lost 30 lbs. I had to work hard to keep it off as it was no easy ride for me. 10 to 15 miles of biking daily, yoga, weights everything. And then, due to some health issues and COVID, all of the exercising had to stop, and I literally gained 45 lbs on top of the already 15 lbs I had to lose. I looked like another person. and my family was polite but people were shocked and I could tell in their faces. I did this with no hesitation when I realized I could not control what was happening.
Today, 6 days post-op and I felt like a million dollars. the swelling in my belly has gone down significantly, I was able to walk everywhere with my husband in the beautiful Florida sunshine. I am so happy today. Still on liquids but I am okay. No pain, discomfort, just itchy incisions that I purchased Vitamin e for, and it stopped. Tomorrow I will weigh myself as it will officially be one week.

I own a business and kind of forced to start working before most people. I was feeling pretty good after 5/6 days. but to keep up with the pressure of 8 hour days, not sure about that. there were moments i just stopped supervising and needed a rest. It is super important to let the body heal.

I had a 4 day stall last week, then Saturday, the scale started to move again. I think it is our bodies recalibrating, then on to the next lower level. Just stick to your plan, and the scale will start moving again! 😊
