Dame21 reacted to Arabesque in Struggling! Motivation needed please :)
You’re doing so well. Congratulations. But I do understand that lethargy that comes when you’ve been so vigilant. Our will power & focus starts to waver & it all just seems to be too hard. I think most of us experience it at some time.
As @GummyBearQueen suggested reflecting on your non scale victories can help regain your focus. Are you moving about more easily? Has your health started to improve? Have you dropped clothing sizes? Is it easier to bathe or do your hair? I loved looking at the graph of my weight loss. Watching that line going in a downwards direction was often more motivating than looking at a number on the scales every day. Also reminding yourself why you made your decision to have the surgery helps. Set yourself some staged goals (every time you lose another 20lbs, walk 3 kms, ...) & reward yourself with a new haircut or colour, a spa day, a new accessory or jewellery, etc. when you achieve them.
How we feel when we’re full or hungry is different after surgery. One of my learnings was the difference between feeling full & having eaten enough. You don’t necessarily need to be full to have had bough to eat. I still ask myself do I need this bite or just want it. It was a bit of a come to Jesus moment for me.
Seems like you’re meeting your Water goals, increasing your activity & if you’re meeting your Protein goals, you’re already ahead of the game.
To begin you are really focussed on your food intake. You’re learning to eat in new ways & it does take a lot of effort to ensure you’re doing the right thing for your plan & for you. I’d like to say in time you won’t be consumed by what you eat (bad pun) but it does get easier. I know what foods I can eat & what ones my tummy doesn’t like all that much (like oily fish or char grilled meats). I’ve worked out what foods I don’t want to eat anymore (processed carbs) & what foods/drinks I’m happy to have less frequently (alcohol) or those I’ll have only on very rare occasions (desserts, cakes, etc.)
I used to worry about how much I thought about food but then I realised I used to think a lot about food before surgery. Before surgery I was always thinking about what I could eat & when I could eat again. Now I think about good food choices, the nutritional benefits of a food & if I really need to eat.
But it is so worth it.

After my one-week post-op visit, my doc told me I could go from full-liquid to puree diet. He also said I didn't have to grind up soft white fish or scrambled eggs if I chewed them well.
Last night for dinner I had an ounce of commercially-prepared breaded cod, with 95% of the breading removed. I also had a quarter cup of mashed potatoes. It was great!
For lunch today, I had a scrambled egg. To be precise, one egg and one egg white. As I was eating, I was thinking, "Everyone tells me to stop eating when I feel full. I don't know whether I've ever felt that. I wonder what it feels like to be full now." Then, about the last bite, I realized I felt full.
Thirty minutes later, I was miserable. It wasn't quite pain. It was more like pressure. It felt like somebody was inflating a basketball inside my gut. I tried to take a nap and couldn't. I sat in the recliner. No help. I tried moving to a different position. Every time, it would feel better for a second, but then the pressure resumed.
Finally I was lying on the floor moaning. I made the wise decision to crawl to the bathroom. After being there for 5 minutes, I finally vomited. (Forgive me for being graphic here, but we're friends, right?) I expected to see a bunch of scrambled eggs, but instead there was just a tablespoon or so of clear saliva. This was about two and a half hours after I ate the eggs.
The pressure didn't stop right away, though it began to diminish. Twenty minutes or so later, I felt well enough to scrape myself off the floor and take the elevator downstairs. It took another couple hours before I was back to normal, though totally whipped.
If you have any "Don't ever do this" stories, please share them. I would be thrilled get the advice that could help me avoid an episode like I just went through.

Yep, it takes a while to learn what "full" feels like now. I did the same thing once. Once. ☝️

Sorry but people do and don't tell others for many PERSONAL reasons. Just like someone who is gay MAY or MAY NOT choose to tell someone that info. It's THEIR choice. Just like when someone is in need of getting dentures. They MAY or MAY NOT choose to tell others. But it's THEIR choice. Just like someone with a life threatening disease MAY or MAY NOT tell others. It's THEIR choice. I personally do not see how someone withholding personal info about themselves is harmful to others. IMO it isn't. No rules saying we must tell the world about every little diet, procedure, dental work, life saving intervention, etc. that we may need or want needs to be broadcasted.
Also, I didn't need to engage other overweight people with questions to learn if or how they've had surgery themselves. I found out about it from my doctor. Like I imagine many others do too when the doc and patient have tried everything to help them lose weight and nothing has worked.

As I've said here before, I shared my surgery with a small group of friends and family--and I had a couple of very negative, judgmental reactions even within that group.
When other friends or acquaintances ask how I lost so much weight, I tell them it was a medically-supervised weight loss program. The only exception is if a very obese person asks, in which case I will tell the truth in hopes of inspiring them to do the same. I don't think it's fair to give them false hope that my results were achievable without surgery.
I will note that I have also had cancer and kept that information among a small group of people as well. Many people don't know how to respond when someone is dealing with cancer, and I didn't want to deal with that. It was a very personal and private journey for me.

IMHO People have to do what’s right for their situations. If that means not disclosing, their choice.

My hangup with telling people about surgery proactively is that I worry it would cause harm to others. If someone with obesity approached me and asked me "how I did it," I would be 100% honest. But I don't want me being open about it proactively to be taken as a message that I think this is what an obese person "should do." I want to be respectful of my friends who are working really hard to feel good in their large bodies.
I've told about 9 people, all friends, no family. One of the people I disclosed it to, who is thin, had a very strained reaction, and essentially told me she couldn't engage in the conversation because of her background with eating disorders, which I wasn't aware of. She was maybe the 3rd or 4th person I told, and moving forward with the next few, I was very very tentative with how I told people, and made clear that I would answer questions, but that we didn't need to discuss it further since it's a sensitive topic.
food and weight are very complicated things for people and I want to be very careful with suddenly opening intimate conversations about them with unsuspecting friends.

Six months down! I’m weighing in today at 209.2, so I lost 8.6 lbs last month. Slowing down a bit, but that’s to be expected. Overall I’m 129.8 lbs down.

I’m halfway through a couch to 5k app. It feels great and kind of weird to be running. Like it seems almost impossible that someone of my size can run- then I remember I’m only 9 lbs from being overweight. It’s hard to remember my actual size a lot of the time.

I love how I’m starting to look, and I can’t get over how amazing it feels to run up a staircase that before I had to slowly walk up feeling my knees ache with every step. I’m happy every single day that I had this surgery. Some of my “new” clothes are starting to be too big. Yes, I knew I shouldn’t buy so much but oh well, that’s what Poshmark is for.

This month I want to finish the C25K app and run for 30 minutes straight...the thought is crazy but I’m excited by the possibility. I want to lose 9.4 lbs....which would put me in onederland! It would also move me into being overweight...luckily everyone here understands how exciting being overweight would be.

Crazy to think that six months ago today I was being dropped off at the hospital by my husband. I was so nervous and excited but also certain I was making the right choice. And I was!

You may try warm pads, that works quite well with my bruises on one of my scar. And I agree with the previous post - no ibuprofen.

It takes a lot of real persistent effort over time to stretch your tummy. Fluids pass through your tummy pretty quickly & won’t cause damage only discomfort if you drink too much too quickly for your body to digest it.
Stay away from the ibuprofen. Bariatric patients aren’t able to take Nsaids after surgery because they damage the lining of your tiny tummy. Your medical team should have told you this.
You shouldn’t really be experiencing pain this far out if surgery. Most of us are basically or mostly pain free by about day 4 or 5. While it could be the bruise causing the pain I would encourage you to contact your medical team.
If you experience pain or symptoms that are unusual for you always call your team.

Not sure about the bruising, but for the drinking I think you are fine. liquid doesn't stay in the stomach long, which would be why you are able to drink 8 oz of it. Some people might be struggling for other reasons like nausea or pain, but if you're able to get 8 oz in, that's great!

There is your key right there - whenever you see very rapid weight change, there is going to be a lot of Water weight involved. Indeed, most of our initial loss is concentrated on water weight (it is associated with the glycogen/carbohydrate that we burn off initially,) and then we tend to pause to let things catch up before changing gears to start burning our fat reserves. We may just have a stall and not lose anything for a few days, or week or two, and we may even gain a bit as things stabilize. But they will stabilize and you will start losing again, albeit at a somewhat lower rate than before - expect that - as then you will be primarily burning your fat stores, which burn more slowly (on the order of 3500 calories per pound, versus around 2000 calories per pound when we are in that initial glycogen depleting state.)

My kids are between yours - 8 and 6, and they are both already showing signs of being overweight. We talk about my diabetes, and how they are both at risk for it. And then I told them about how I could possibly have a surgery that could help me run faster to chase them at the park and have more energy for playing. They both understood and were excited.

Sitting here this morning in my chair doing some reading. I glanced over to my table and saw the current yummy chocolate bar I’m working on. It has eight segments, each one 56 calories. I am now to a point where I can allow myself this treat and control it. Where back in the day this bar (plus likely quite a few other sweets) would be gone in a day, now I savor one square in the evening while I read. One Bar now lasts 8 days! I actually have to keep it sealed in a baggie to keep it fresh. In addition to all the other benefits, my sleeve has given me the control over food that I never had before.

I'm in tomorrow for the sleeve. I'm not as scared as I was when I first started. I didn't know if I had the emotional fortitude to give up my best friend, food. Through the 2 week diet, watching my family eat their meals while eating Soup, I found i wasn't going crazy. I wasn't even grieving. I am ready to change.
