    May Surgeries - check in!

My surgery is June 1st. Starting my preop diet this morning: replace 2 meals a day with protein shakes, eating only one lean meal/day. The postop nutrition guidelines the Nutritionist gave me states: phase 1 - clear liquids for 3 days; phase 2 -high protein full liquids for 2 weeks; phase 3 - soft foods for 1 month; finally phase 4- maintenance (regular) diet for “lifetime.”

    PreOp

LisLuva86: I’m nervous and scared too. I’m right there with you. I also start my 2 week preop diet tomorrow morning to prepare for surgery on June 1st. I guess one thing that keeps going through my mind is that I just turned 63 this past weekend and both my parents died around the same age. My Dad died in his sleep of heart failure the month before his 63rd birthday and my Mom died of lung cancer 2 months after turning 63. I keep telling myself that they were both heavy smokers and their deaths were related to the smoking. I’ve never been a smoker myself other than the second hand smoke I inhaled through my childhood. It’s scary since it’s such a big, life changing surgery. You hang in there and I’ll do the same!

    June Surgeries

I’m June 1st as well...definitely feeling real now. I start my Preop diet on 5/18 then I go to my surgeon for the preop visit on May 27th. Office told me to plan on being there for 2-3 hours. From there I go to the hospital for preadmission testing...it’s going to be a long day! I don’t know if they will do the covid testing on the 27th or if I’ll have to go somewhere over that weekend. I have to work the night of 5/29 .. it’s my last shift to work before Surgery. It’s just around the corner!!! So excited and nervous!

Pureed - how do I know if I am full?

I bought some silicone ice cube trays with lids planning to make portion controlled meals...each compartment holds 1/3 cup with room for expansion when frozen. Each try has 6 compartments. Does anyone have some good freezable recipes that would work for this? Having surgery 6/1/21 but planning ahead and want to try some recipes beforehand.

    Protein drinks

Anyone tried the Fairlife Chocolate Protein drink? Are they good for the preop liquid diet?

    Vitamin Patches?

My surgeons office recommends the vitamin patches but only for the first month postop then switch to the oral vitamins.
  13. I’m 62 right now but will be 63 by the time I have my surgery 6/1/21. I was put on my first diet when I was in 2nd grade. They actually put me on diet pills that made me sooooo shaky! Mom cut the pills in half but I was still shaky so cut them into quarters and that worked better but now, today looking back at that and knowing what I now know (I’m a nurse) I just want to ask them “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????” Putting a 4th grader on dexies!!! OMG! After gaining back the 40 lbs id lost (plus some, of course) I was on Weight Watchers, Optifast, Medifast, cabbage soup diet, Atkins, and on and on. This surgery is hopefully the tool I’ve been searching for! I’m excited by the support from others on this site and I hope to be able to offer support to there as well! We got this!!!

    What is your why?

I’m tired of having painful knees and feet. I’m “pre-diabetic” and do NOT want to become a full diabetic. I’m a nurse and I’ve seen the damage diabetes does to every body system! I have hypertension and would love to decrease my medications...been on BP meds since I was 19 so doubt I will get off completely but maybe. However, the event that really pushed me to start seriously pursuing WLS happened at work. One of the things I have to do at work is go to the morgue and sign the paperwork and release bodies to the funeral home. When I had called the funeral home to request the pickup, they asked me the persons weight and when I told them, they said they would dispatch their van along with an extra person due to the weight. As I assisted with moving the person from the morgue tray to their stretcher I realized the person was only slightly heavier that myself. I suddenly felt so sorry for this patient and then felt embarrassed for myself and determined at that moment to do something to get the excess weight off once and for all. I have no idea why this time it affected me so much but I’m glad it did. I’m ready to get the WLS done and get my life and energy back!

    Hungry hungry hungry

I find with me, it’s not so much the calories but the carbs that stalls my weight loss. How many carbs in the raisin bread?
  16. My surgery is scheduled for June 1st. I didn’t want to wait that long but it’s probably best in the long run as I make the lifestyle changes needed. Keeping a positive outlook!
  17. I will be 63 when I have my surgery on 6/1/21...my age wasn’t an issue. I’m so looking forward to having joints that don’t ache, preventing my prediabetes from progressing and maybe decreasing or getting off my blood pressure medications.
  18. “Patchaid.com” is the website the nutritionist at my doctors office gave me. They arrived quickly! They’re not very large, cloth, hypoallergenic adhesive. You wear it for about 8 hours or so a day. I expect my stomach will appreciate not having to try to deal with those vitamin pills or chewables for the first month post op!
  19. Congrats on the May 3rd date!! Hoping I’ll get my surgery date sometime this week!
  20. My surgeon says I can use the multivitamin patch for the first 30 days then I’ll switch to regular vitamins...looking at the chewable ones but haven’t decided yet since I’m still waiting for my official surgery date. I got the 30 day supply of vitamin patches in the mail today so I’m all set there. :-)
  21. Oh shoot! I really don’t want to wait that long! That will mess up my whole summer semester of teaching Clinicals. Maybe they will get a cancellation. Fingers crossed!
  22. Dr Texeira and Dr Jawad did my friend’s duodenal switch in 2019 and she has done wonderfully well!
  23. Hi! I’m in the pre-op process with Dr Jawad in Orlando. I have had the info session, 1st appt with Dr Jawad, lab work, psych eval, nutrition class, EGD, cardiac clearance with ECG and Echocardiogram. My 2nd appointment with Dr Jawad is next Monday 3/29 and hoping they get the insurance approval QUICKLY! I started making the “two weeks prior to surgery” diet changes they recommended “just in case” so I’m ready!
