    newbie, 5 days out

Lose about 15 lbs by Jan 26th?? I never lost that fast. A huge week for me is 3 lbs, 2 lbs is more normal. And I had more to lose it looks like than you did. Maybe Im not understanding you about which month you want to get to 185 by.
  2. I flew home from Mexico the day after my surgery, which was a LOT of walking, couldnt find how to get to the super shuttle and walked and walked and walked with my bag and heavy purse. You might have some gas and feel a little worse for wear, but you should be fine to be in a wedding, but you might not want a really long day of it. You might still be on full liquids and not get to eat. I was HUNGRY after my surgery, some people luckily arent. That would be the worst part to me, not being able to eat what I wanted. No champagne, since its carbonated either. I tried some Christmast day and it got to me fast and I went oh no, forgot it was carbonated.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Deedee I don't personally think it's normal to throw up. If you go on liquids for 2 days and still throwing up, then to me you are too tight. On the other hand, I get annoyed that my fill doctor wouldn't fill me tighter, when I hear of others who lose because they can't really eat. My fill doctor does the fluro and the barium swallow test and looks at how fast the barium reaches your stomach and wouldnt go tighter. I wish I were losing faster too. I'm going to do a variation of the 5 day pouch test and see if that jump starts me. I did have some of that special K cereal, but only had protein drink the rest of yesterday for day 1 (I felt the need for the fiber). I'v read some lost 5 lbs on this, so far Im down 1/2 lb. I had been 175 1/2 last week, and 175 this morning, we will see if it drops me down for tomorrow's weigh in. I wanna lost it fast as much as the next person, but I just don't. I don't think everyone loses at the same rate, so I don't beat myself up if others lose faster. There will always be someone who can shed the weight faster. Just keep on track most of the time. A small cheat occassionally to me is necessary so you can keep going and not feel deprived. Keep on trying and maybe your doctor will have some wisdom next visit too.
  4. Instead of reacting negatively, why not take it that people are concerned if you don't allow the proper time to heal, later down the line your band could slip. That's why people were concerned, not because they want to act like the "know everything". I gotta admit I did quit one support group because those few at goal were put on pedestals and they acted like the rest of us didn't know anything, i.e. we got no respect, so I told them adios, that I would do it my way, no matter how hard it was. I still feel like my band gives me very little resistance, even though its as tight as my fill doctor will make it. I really thought it would be easier than this, it never has gotten easier for me and still feels like a diet. I did get tired of the preaching, that I needed to eat "the bandster way"

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

If you ate 1 cup of the special K, you would also have about 13.3 g of protein, so no difference there. I can easily eat a whole cup of cereal. I often wonder if there is something wrong with my band. Even when the doctor claims Im restricted as much as she will allow I can eat anything in larger quantities than others here state. lynn, so sorry to hear about your dog, heart breaking. LongtoBThin if you are wanting any info on cruising, I'm the cruising Queen, just pm or email me. I probably know more than most TAs and wouldn't be trying to push what will make me commission.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

I found Special K cereal this past week. Never looked for it before, but it had a free gallon of milk if we bought 3 boxes. Special K Protein Plus 10g protein, 9g net carbs, 5g fiber, 100 calories per serving It smells like raisen bran, so I suspect it has a lot of bran in it. Pretty good, different than their other cereal.
  7. Anytime you have lost 10 lbs in less than a month, you can't say you havent lost much. If you don't start to realize that 1 - 2 lbs a week is normal and adjust your expectations, you will be unhappy and more apt to throw in the towel. You need to realize instead this is a long term process, just like any diet and it will eventually all add up. I was banded in July and just hit my half way mark last week.
  8. Please go back on mushys or whatever it is you are supposed to be 10 days out. (each doctor is different). As far as you having thought you wouldnt be able to eat after surgery?? I can't think of anything I'v read here that would make you think that. I was ready to eat a horse after surgery, but I didn't. You dont want your band to slip and have more surgery, so stop and go back to what you are allowed to eat. Even now, when Im supposedly tight, I can eat anything, yep anything. Only some people can't eat a few things, not everyone. If you assumed that the band would stop you from being able to eat, you must not have read enough here, because you can. The band only helps with you feeling more full faster, but doesnt stop most of us from eating. The fear of having wasted $6,500 is what stopped me from cheating and the fear of more surgury. It should worry you enough to stop and allow yourself to heal too.

    Restaurant rage

I'm so sorry things are so rough for you right now. It sounds like your husband is a big part of the problem. I was banded around when you were and have had 3 fills and I dont eat special, but I do sometimes have trouble chewing things like steak because of teeth and gums issues, so I know how you feel there. We are doing my parent's anniversary at home. Sometimes that is just easier, hope your husband comes thru with something special. I got short ribs BBQ and a small cheesecake for dessert and a crystal thingee as a present. Im sorry the restaurant didnt work out for you. Maybe you can go next weekend? If it were me, Id still want to go and wouldnt take no for a answer. I looked again, and we were banded the same exact date, Happy banding sister.

    Happy Problem to Report!

There is a 50s thread that you should join. I'm 58, so on that thread the excuse about age doesn't work, lol.... come join us. If you sew, why didnt you just put a dart in the back of some of the other pants you are giving away, that's what Iv been doing. Maybe I haven't slimmed down as much as you have though. I'm just now buying some new cruise dresses. I'm still in a size 18, wearing a xl or 2X tee shirt, my stomach hasnt come down much .... yet.
  11. So, a roll of quarters in each pocket wouldn't have worked? I don't have insurance and my BMI was showing below 40, so I wondered.

How much is a normal fill?

There is no set amount. My doctor uses fluoro and barium swallow. If the barium will not go down into your stomach, she removes part of the fill until it will trickle down. If liquids wouldnt go down to your stomach, then you reached the limit and need to back it off. 3 cc's at a time is a large amount that I'v never been able to get my fill doctor to give me, she wouldn't restrict me beyond where liquids go easily into your stomach.

How much is a normal fill?

I had 1.8 cc, 1.8 cc, then .5 cc. Less than many for a 10 cc band. My fill doctor keeps going off into that there is a mistake, I don't really have a 10 cc band. I had to go get my surgeon to sign a letter.
  14. I try and aim for around a average of 1200 too. Up the Protein, you have to fuel that weight loss. Maybe your body is just catching up to the 18 lbs you lost really fast. I joined sparks people and you can track food on there and your other goals. Its also free. Many places to track calories. Sparks people has everything in one place.
  15. When I did Nutrisystem, a fairly young gal, 20ish, weighed over 500 lbs I believe and tried out for this show. Even though she was in good health, they told her to lose 100 - 200 lbs and come back, they didnt take really heavy women because of the risk. She was so upset and sad to be told she was too large to be accepted for a show called "The Biggest Loser". My heart went out to her. I see the show is doing some large men and women and I'm glad. Everyone needs help losing and I would think those who are larger, even more so.

    Biggest Loser on now

The father on the brown team had by-pass surgery to lose weight and still gained. They showed his stomach on the MRI machine and said it was the size of a egg and still he managed to gain, "WLS is not a panacea" (edited to add the doctor said this, not me).

    Half-way mark!!

I just hit my half way mark too, was 177 lbs this morning. I wanted to wait until I saw it again tomorrow before I changed my ticker. Congrats to us, we both are exactly half way.
  18. Hi neighbor. Im in Richardson, right next to Plano. Just for a comparison. I paid $6500 and there is a very good doctor at Medical City that charges $150 per fill for those banded in the U.S. but $250 for Mexico bandees I could have gone to. I choose Dr. Stephanie in Tyler. She charges $200, but uses fluro and a barium swallow for each fill, but then there is gas to drive both ways added in. Iv had 3 fills @ $200 added to the $6500 plus plane fare to El Paso on SW which would have been around $200, but I came home instead of staying their their hotel, and it cost about another $100 to change my airfare last minute. I was meet at the airport and driven to the hospital in Juarez about 20 minutes over the border and back to the airport. I could have schedeled sooner, but it was cheaper to purchase airfare 2 weeks in advance, we actually pushed the date back by a week. I could have scheduled as fast as you did. It is true, if you are paying extra for fills you need to add that into the cost. Dr. Stephanie says Im as tight as she will make me. I had to talk her into keeping in a .5 cc fill last time so I doubt I will go back for another fill anytime soon. Ill probably haven one more fill before my first year is up. My doctor would have done free fills as well, but I decided its too far to go to get them. I had a IV for pain for 24 hours and at least 5 nurses around all the time, and only 3 patients on the floor. If I wanted help tying my shoe, they did it, whatever I needed.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Katydid, I have felt blocked with liquids if I am a little blocked by regular foods already, liquids can make it worse. Oregondaisy have you tried the Special K waters? They have one with fiber that I try and do, even though to me it is a little thick. I use everything and have fiber Choice tablets in cherry flavor to nibble on, SF ones. No amount of fiber seems to be enough though. Benefiber, all of them. Orea, my fellow July butterfly, congrats on hitting twoverville. Finally, at last huh? I saw 177 this morning, so Im half way to 120. Might not go all the way to 120, will see how I look in that area, long time away.
  20. If you are self pay, I would suggest going to Mexico. That's what a lot of us did. They keep you at least an extra night, instead of doing it as a outpatient and treat you like royalty. If you have it done in the U.S. there will be lots of extra charges and just more red tape. I decided and used one of the sites I googled and had it done within about 3 weeks of my decision. My surgery date was July 9th, 2008, good luck. There is a long thread how to pick a doctor in Mexico, but there are lots of good ones, first pick which city you want to go to. Im in Texas, so Juarez, thru El Paso was the obvious choice.

    Countdown to Onederland!

I always dropped about 2 pounds suddenly on every fill. I tell myself it's not the fill itself, I could probably do the same thing by not eating for 24 hour, just having one protein shake for the entire day I sip on off an on. I usually dont feel like eating right after the fill, and only allowed black coffee when I wake up and its a 5 hour round trip to my fill doctor. I think you will drop with the fill, I did each time. I thought Id never get below 200 either, that was a hard weight to break below, then 80 was another one I stuck at, been in this 2 lb range for about 3 weeks too. I also plan a day of baked salmon when I get stuck, I nibble on all day. The extra protein in salmon works for me. Or I have a shake for lunch which seems to work well for me. I up the protein to get out of a stall. I can eat a pound or so of salmon in a day which is obviously 1500 - 1700 calories, but it jumps my weight loss within 48 hours every time. I lost 9 lbs pre surgery, so I started in the 240s. You can break out of this stall too, just keep pushing the protein.
  22. I dont carry weight well. I'v been asked numerous times by complete strangers when the baby was due when I was around 150 lbs, then I got too fat I guess to ask. One person was next to me in the produce section, never saw them before, who out of the blue asked when I was due. I do have a belly, typical of folks who are insulin resitant/pre diabetic. I just try and tell myself they thought they were being friendly.
  23. Im about at 6 months out, 55 pounds lost. Cant remember exactly where I was 2 months ago. Banded July 9th.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Im planning on losing 120 lbs or so myself. Im 58, so no, I dont think 55 is too old I am high enough sugar levels that I qualfied for a diabetes study, borderline. The insulin spiking was another reason I jumped in and got banded, even though I was self pay, decided saving my life was worth it. Of course you can do it, but you have to be ready and work at it too.
