JoriJori got a reaction from KateinMichigan in GERD with Sleeve
I Had my sleeve surgery on nov 23 2020 and I have GERD. my doctor doesn’t understand what I’m going through. He only told me to take gaviscon which didn’t help at all because every time I take it I throw it up in like half an hour. the reason why he doesn’t understand me it’s because I’m only 17 and he thinks I’m overreacting. It’s been 2 months now and my GERD is not getting any better. i throw up almost anything I eat or drink everyday. I used to be on Nexium 40 2x a day but it turns out I’m allergic to one of the ingredients. I really need help because it came to the point where I literally fast everyday.

Once you're allowed past liquids and soft foods, all options are on the table.

I had an RNY and was specifically told not to eat strawberries and to avoid seeds and skins on food like potatoes and fruit. As all say- so many different diet requirements....

    Best of luck!

Berries are good. I ate a lot of Water melon at first because it helped with my Fluid intake. I’d probably avoid the pineapple to begin because of its acid & fibrous nature.
Like most foods, it’s trial & error as to which ones you’ll be able to tolerate. I love mangoes & lychees but they tend to trigger my restriction pretty darn quickly. And remember because of the temporary change to your taste buds you may not enjoy eating your favourite fruits at first.

Im 3.5 months out and although I've never in my life been able to burp loudly there's a constant gurgling sound after I eat or drink now. My surgeon said it can last up to a yr and it's my new stomach learning to push out air.. i don't have any wind at all though

I'm 6 weeks out and am eating apples, mangoes, all kinds of berries, kiwis, and bananas. I haven't had any issues. These are allowed on my plan though so it's possible it's different for other people.

pineapple has a lot of acid in it - not sure if that will bother your stomach or not. It would have mine. Strawberries have seeds - I was supposed to avoid those at first - I can't remember when I was allowed to have those. I'd call your clinic and ask.

I eat very much to routine most of the time i.e. to time. I also don’t mind if I take an hour to eat a meal. It’s how I ensure I meet my goals & get in enough food during the day.
There’s no rule to say you have to eat all of your meal in one sitting. As long as your meeting your goals each day. Skyewolfe’s suggestion to eat 4 or 5 smaller meals is a good one as is Mr Alley Gator’s of trying nutritionally boosted shakes to sip during the day. Give them a go. Different things work for different people. You just have to find what works for you.
Have a chat with your medical team about your reluctance to eat. They may suggest you speak with a therapist to work through why you’re feeling this way.
    Good luck.

The "lump" in your throat may be indigestion. Even when you don't eat, your stomach still produces acid. Make sure you are taking your Prilosec. I find food actually makes mine better. Good to hear that green tea helps you. Continue with that. Are you getting enough Protein in? The NUT is a friend. They are another tool to help us lose weight in a healthy way. Do not be afraid of the NUT. They are there to guide you and to help you stay healthy. Keep a calendar / journal of your problems. List dates, times, amount of food, how you felt, amount of drink, how you felt. This is very important information for the NUT. I hope your visit with the NUT goes well!!

Thank you so much for helping me, and yes I haven’t tried Protein Powder but I will try to buy some and see if I can tolerate it. 10 minutes ago my mom forced me to eat a small banana and thank goodness I felt so much better after eating it 😊, again thank you for helping me!

Try flavored water (Crystal Light, etc) or some Gatorade to stay hydrated.

Keep an eye on your blood pressure. If you are on medicine, you may need less. Definitely communicate with your primary care physician if this continues.

    Hello, Jori!

990ml isn't too bad to start out with, but really try to get in more so you don't become (if you're not already) dehydrated. Try room temperature, a little colder, and ice cold... see which you tolerate best. In the VERY beginning, I could only tolerate absolutely ice cold Water, otherwise I would get terrible hiccups. That has changed and I can have all temperatures now with no problems.

You definitely need more Protein than what you're getting from one container of FF Greek yogurt, though. Have you tried Protein Shakes (that would help get in more liquid as well!) or adding some unflavored protein powder to your yogurt?

If walking is really bothering you, I would maybe suggest holding off on that for now, until you are getting in more calories per day.

I don't think your weight loss in the first month is *too* extreme for having had the surgery. It will slow down

All the best to you, and keep us posted!

being dizzy when you get up is common after surgery - or at least during the first few weeks or months. It's often due to changes in blood pressure - but in your case, it could also be due to dehydration or weakness from not eating. So try to drink/eat what your clinic is telling you to, even if you're not hungry or thirsty. And if it's blood pressure-related, try to get up from a sitting or lying down position more slowly.
