SoulGardener reacted to GreenThumb in Depression after surgery?
Hi all, three weeks post-op here and everything food-wise seems to be going fine. I also anticipated crazy hormones, but I didn't expect it to manifest as depression. I mean, we ramp up for months or years for this surgery, we finally get it, the weight is coming off, and ... the blues set in? That's my experience the past two weeks. My family is noticing it more and more and starting to worry. I'm on Effexor XR for anxiety and mild depression and have been for years. Could it be the XR isn't absorbing correctly with my sleeve? I haven't had any withdrawal symptoms so I assumed there were no issues.
Anyone else very BLAH after surgery?
I'm hoping things improve when I return to work next week.

Yes, I've found this. Everyone's different, but my depression increased after surgery. My overeating was driven in large part by stress and depression and I knew that losing weight wouldn't make me feel "happier" but felt that it would make my life easier. I didn't expect the depression to be worse after the op, but it is. I think it's because the comfort eating was fairly effective at distracting from/damping down my depression and that coping strategy has gone. I'm 4 months post-op and still unsure what to do about it - I take a very low dose of anti anxiety medicine and am reluctant to take anti-depressants proper, but may have to go to my doctor if things don't improve. Good luck with your journey.

    Hi everyone!
So I am feeling very discouraged today. I weighed myself today for the first time in a week. I thought the scale would show some weight loss because I noticed that my stomach looks more flat than the previous week. To my surprise, the scale shows that I've gained five pounds in one week I'm not taking in that many calories on the puree stage, im just surprised to gain weight so soon after surgery. The first two weeks I have lost a lot of weight. The day of my surgery almost four weeks ago I was 397lbs and I am now in my 360s. But I still have a lot to lose and I just have so many thoughts in my head now, like was this surgery worth it if im just going to gain weight? I understand it may be Water weight, I have been struggling drinking my water. Has anyone else had a similar story when they first started their journey especially being a couple hundred pounds overweight? Also how do you get 64oz of water in per day so early on? I am struggling, mostly because I forget to drink haha any suggestions?

I am nearly prepared for surgery. Just have to get a few last minute supplies & it’s “t-time!”. Then one-two nights in hospital, depending on how I do.

Now that I have lost 15 pounds the first 13 days on the pre-op diet, I KNOW I can follow the post-op diet,

AND I know I can change my eating habits for life.

I’ve done a LOT of difficult things in my life; this is just another one! The pre-op diet has given me renewed confidence, so my anxiety over failure is waning.

OTHERS DiD THiS, I CAN DO THIS & SO CAN YOU!!!

Thank you to the many BP members who have helped SO much to make my WL journey easier!!

SoulGardener got a reaction from blackcatsandbaddecisions in What was/is your greatest fear?
jaelzion, those were also my fears. Fear that I could end up with a permanent colostomy from complications, or failure. I had two family members who talked me out of surgery twice. But I decided they probably didn’t understand much about it. As I got older I began to have heart problems. So this time it’s a GO! I want to live!

That’s a great way to approach it... I am older & retired, so I tend to buy cheap plain clothes. But I suspect when I get this weight off (fingers-crossed) my self-esteem will improve, and I will get out more. So if I am successful, there are possibly prettier clothes in my future! 😁

I went ahead and ordered one size and two sizes smaller of two t-shirts each and one pair of shorts about two sizes smaller. I had not ordered last year because I couldn’t go anywhere anyway. Figured new clothes + a little incentive would be s great pick me up.

SoulGardener reacted to GreenTealael in Not a huge issue but...
I had to buy an entirely new wardrobe at 4 months post op and then again at goal around 2 years ago. Now I only buy new things for special events (not these days) or fun.
Indulging in new clothes trends/styles is really fun when things are new and your finding your new style/body identity but can also be expensive.
Perhaps buy things you don’t mind giving away in a few months when you reach a smaller size

SoulGardener reacted to Thinner Peace in Black Poop...is This Normal In The Pre-Op Stage?
    Hello,
So, lets get personal. I am on day 10 of my pre-op liquid diet. Day 3 I had the runs, day 6 I had loose stools, and today I have black poop. I am scheduled to get sleeved in 2 days. I already has esophogatis and gastritis which is said to get worse with the sleeve due to GERD. These two conditions are also linked with black poop. Could this be caused by all the Protein I have been getting these past 2 weeks or due to internal bleeding?
