Anyone get a sleeve that has existing Nutcracker Esophagus? Mine is not caused by reflux but I fear the operation would cause reflux and trigger more spasms. I have spasms that last about 6 hours at a time and feel like a heart attack. Would a bypass be a better option even though my BMI is only 38?

I would avoid gastric sleeve simply because post operative GERD is very common afterward. I had never had any type of reflux until after my sleeve. I eventually had a revision from sleeve to bypass and it helped. I wanted to ask you about esophageal spasms and nutcracker esophagus. I’m in the process of having a diagnosis determined for the pain I have when I eat anything with any kind of texture or “substance” to it. This has been going on for about 9 months (following my sleeve to bypass revision.) I also have esophageal spasms that hurt so bad I feel like I’m going to pass out. Does any of this sound familiar to you and how long did it take for you to be diagnosed? Are you taking any medications that help? Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated!!!

  2. I’ve lost 125 lbs since my RNY and am seeking advice about treating sagging skin on the face. It’s really bothering me so I know eventually I’ll have something done. I’m wondering what other WL patients have done to treat sagging skin on the face. I.e.: lower face lift? full face lift? Fillers? Radiofrequency treatment? Micro needling? Any advice would be most welcome and greatly appreciated!!!

  3. I’m so glad I came across this thread! I’ve lost 100lbs since my surgery and my breast have lost all shape and volume. I never had really large breasts to begin with but now what I did have is completely gone and ‘deflated.’ Did those of you who had breast lifts see a reconstruction specialist? I feel like those of us who have lost a LOT of weight kinda fit in a category all our own. Also, I’m wondering if I should consider implants as well. Most of my adult life I had a full C cup size and now my breasts are just sad on a cracker.

  4. Hi! I’m so glad to have found this discussion! I’ve been experiencing episodes of hypoglycemia that come on so quickly. I will admit that one time I drank a sugary drink and man, did I pay for it! (I had GB almost 3 weeks ago.) My blood sugar only drops into the mid 50s but I feel absolutely horrible. Sweating, shaking, feeling like I’m going to pass out… I see my doctor tomorrow as one of my follow up appointments so I’m going to ask about the other times where nothing I did seemed to instigate the sudden drop in blood sugar. Can anyone offer suggestions as to what you do when this happens? All I know to do is sip some orange juice. Thank you! 😊

Thank you so much, it’s all a bit daunting really, I thought having the op would be the hard part but preparing for life after seems very complex. I will make sure I get the Vitamins as soon as. Much appreciated 👍🏻

Once you get going on drinking plenty of fluids and taking your Vitamins, it’s really not bad at all! I know it seems that way when you read everything I wrote but (seriously!) you’ll be fine! I was just trying to think of a the tips I’ve learned along the way. I had my VSG 18 months ago and my GB 2 weeks ago. I’ve read so much and received so much information from veteran patients I just wanted to share what I knew. I know you’ll do well. People on this site are very helpful. All you have to do is ask if you have questions about things. 😁

Hi All, my first post here and I have had my sleeve done today, a bit sore and have to wait until tomorrow to have leakage test before I can drink. Any tips for the next couple of weeks ahead?

Sip your Water CONSTANTLY! Don’t allow yourself to get dehydrated. If you do, (I did) then call your doctor and they’ll arrange for you to get some IV fluids. Don’t worry so much about hitting your Protein goals for the first few days. Just keep drinking. Start incorporating some Bone Broth and protein waters. (My fave is the blue Protein2O.) Walk some to get the gas they fill you with to move! Take chewable GasX. After about two weeks start your chewable vitamins (I take BariMelts. Multivitamin with Iron, B12, Biotin, and Probiotic.) Add in Zinc along with your Biotin to avoid Hair loss. Take Senekot to help with Constipation. I’m trying to think of anything else I do….. I hope this helps!! 😁👍🏻

I would definitely mention it to your surgeon for a real answer!

But if I was guessing (which I am btw): If it’s only happening when drinking cool to cold drinks maybe the temperature is causing vasoconstriction which is causing cramping. Maybe stick to warmer fluids until you and your surgeon figure out why it’s happening.

    Thank you! That’s a really good thought!😁

  8. Hi! I had a revision of my sleeve (VSG) to RNY on 8/29/22 for a hiatal hernia repair and severe acid reflux. Since then I feel like I’m doing okay and no longer have any acid reflux symptoms. My only concern is every time I drink something cold to room temperature my stomach hurts really bad. I can sip on warm Bone Broth and that doesn’t seem to bother me much. I know I’m just out of surgery and healing but should I still be feeling pain in my stomach almost two weeks out? Any insight as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated! 😊

  9. Hi September buddies! I’ve had a crazy week after my surgery on 8/29. I’ve been struggling with gas pain and swelling; my tummy is so swollen and sore. I have huge bruising near my incision sites, too. I got really nauseated day before yesterday and started vomiting. I really felt terrible! So I ended up back at the surgery center to get IV fluids. I was really dehydrated. Im feeling sooo much better today! I have some meds for nausea now and lidocaine Patches for areas near my incisions that are very sore. Im still the same weight as my surgery day so I guess I should be thankful I didn’t gain due to all the swelling! Im living on Jello, Bone Broth, popsicles, and a LOT of water!

OMG! that sounds horrible!!! Hopefully you're feeling better. I told the OR nurses to give me the patch behind my ear for nausea. My stomach is also swollen!! and I finally took my band-aids off my incisions today. I have two big bruises from Heparin shot and a weird bruise on the left of my thigh.

We took every precaution before surgery to prevent nausea: oral medication, sublingual meds, and a scopolamine patch behind my right ear. I wasn’t nauseous at all with my VSG but I still talked to anesthesia and told them I do tend to get sick kinda easily. I was okay while I was in the hospital. I walked up and down the halls with my IV pole a couple of times and felt fine! No problems going to the ladies’ room or drinking Water. At least this time (for my RNY) I’m not having any problems swallowing. I think once I got home I just wasn’t staying on top of my Fluid intake and started getting really dehydrated. I called my surgeon’s office and they told me to go to the surgery center; they would call ahead to get me set up for IV fluids. Once I got the IVs, I felt okay! My tummy is still just sooo sore, swollen, and bruised. I think that might be from the hiatal hernia repair. The lidocaine Patches are helping tremendously. I’m even using ice packs across my tummy to help with swelling but they aren’t helping alleviate any of it. I’m doing everything they’ve told me to do but I’m still soooo sore. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this swelling improves in the next few days!

I haven't had the time to check anything since surgery day. Everything happened so fast! I was to report for check in at 9:30 and was wheeled to the OR at 11:30. I was in recovery for 2 hours waiting for a room. The gas pains were soooooo bad! It finally went away this afternoon after passing gas...lol

My liquid diet phase 1 is 64 ounces of regular Gatorade or 50/50 diluted juice and then after is broth, Jello, popsicles. That will be my diet for 7 days.

I had my rny and hiatal hernia repair on 8/19. The first couple of days were rough, but now I feel great. slight pain when I turn or move a certain way, but I feel fine. When I left the hospital I was told to hold a pillow or blanket over my belly when I get out of bed etc. At first I forgot, but then when I remembered what a world of difference. I also slept on my side with my belly resting on a pillow. that helped ease the pain tremendously. So remember, pillows are your belly's best friend after surgery!

Thank you for sharing your experience! I have an abdominal binder and am wondering if that will help me after the surgery. I used one after my hysterectomy and it was a godsend! I’ll definitely remember to keep lots of pillows handy, though!

  13. Well, tomorrow is the big day. I have to be at the hospital at 6:30 am. I’m an early riser so it’s no big deal. I’m feeling a little nervous and hoping everything goes well with my hiatal hernia repair and then the RNY. I hear the recovery from the hernia repair is pretty rough so I’m dreading that. I’m nervous but ready to get this show on the road!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻😁

I was supposed to start Vitamin supplements this week, but I have such a hard time taking my blood pressure meds that I don't want to add any meds. Also, I wanted to see how puréed food agreed with me, without the effect of additional pills.

So far, it's been going ok. I guess I will have to start taking supplements next week. Not excited about taking more pills, since my current meds make me gag and sometimes vomit.

Can you tolerate a chewable Vitamin? Sometimes when I take too many pills it makes me feel really nauseous so I switched awhile back to BariMelts chewable supplements. It’s really helped me stay on track with taking my Vitamins. You might try them. I take the Multivitamin with Iron, Calcium, Biotin, probiotic, and B12. (If you decide to order them, use code Kimh20 to get 20% off.)

Hi, what test did you have to prove it? I just got a denial for revision because they want me to do a pH 24hr monitoring test to probe my GERD. I appealed because my GERD has been documented, and I have an EGD done showing that I have a large symptomatic Hiatal hernia, but I guess they want this test to prove it...I’m very frustrated.

I had an EGD and barium swallow test. The EGD documented my hiatal hernia but the barium test showed my GERD wasn’t severe enough for the revision from VSG to RNY. My hiatal hernia is being repaired and is covered by my insurance but the revision to RNY was denied. I had to pay out of pocket for the revision ($2600.) My surgery is on Monday 8/29.

so, as of now, i am not taking any Vitamin supplements whatsoever, and i'm 10 days post op.

my surgeon says that 4 weeks after the surgery, i'll have to do a blood test to see what i'm lacking then to suplement it.

i have no issue with that, it's very rational imo, but i've never heard it be done that way in forums or YouTube videos. everyone just talks about how important it is to take the supplements, yet here am i not taking a single pill, and i'm doing well.

is anyone experiencing / has experienced this same protocol?

If I remember correctly, I wasn’t supposed to take supplements until after my first post-op appointment. Then I just started taking them regularly. I take BariMelts. Multivitamin with Iron, Biotin, Calcium, and Probiotic. My regular Vitamins (pills) are additional iron (I needed it according to my bloodwork), B12 , and D3. My bloodwork has been excellent since my VSG 18 months ago. I’m getting ready to have a revision from VSG to RNY so some my routine may change. I read a lot and watched YouTube videos about Vitamin supplements so they were very helpful. To be honest, it can’t hurt to take Water soluble vitamins. It’s the fat soluble vitamins that you have to be careful not to overdo. That’s where your bloodwork will be extra helpful. 😁

Did anyone have a shockingly easy surgery? I feel like I’ve been lied to about what to expect.

I came through surgery like nothing had happened to me. No pain. No nausea. No “too many sit-ups” feeling. No problem drinking. No aversions.  I required no pain relief after. I got up and went to the bathroom and walked within 5 minutes of being wheeled into my room and then again every hour until I left.

Of course I can tell my stomach is tiny when I’m drinking but the surgery was not what I was expecting.

I did really well after my VSG except for some difficulty drinking Water. That hurt! But I didn’t have nausea or much pain either. I was up and walking the halls pretty quickly, too. I’m getting ready to have a revision to my sleeve (VSG to RNY due to hiatal hernia and GERD) and I hope this surgery goes as well as my last!
Sounds like you’re doing great! Be thankful and roll with it! 💕
