Hellie1028 reacted to GinormousReislin in Lying about not getting surgery is awful
The trend and overwhelming amount of people not honest hurts others who need surgery and also keeps the stigma alive. Most people will talk there loved one out of it because of shame and ignorance. Trust me I'd like to pretend I lost weight by all the sudden eating correct and exercising but thats in itself sick. Your medical care isnt public but would you tell people you had cancer and instead of chemo you just walked and went to weight watchers?
I'm not shaming you lol sorry I am tense but I wish anyone who is neurologically ill will never use an app or be ok which is ridiculous considering the routine and millions who have been operated on.

Sorry for typos and run-on sentences lol my screen broke so i don't try to spell check or proof haha

Hope this hits softer and provokes thought

Hellie1028 reacted to Creekimp13 in What post-op diet did your surgeon/nutritionist put you on, and what is your current success/failure result years later?
What you are describing...(in my opinion) is a bariatric surgeon who uses his patients as advertisements to get business. People saw you shrink overnight and it made them believers...so now he's got more business.
Here's the problem... No one should ever be on a 600 calorie diet for any long period of time. It's unsustainable, unhealthy, and screws your metabolism to high heaven. It also exacerbates eating disorders and disordered thinking about food...which most of us have. (so says my bariatric therapist, dietician and surgeon)
My surgeon was part of a research project that examined post operative metabolic changes and diet long term. I'm still part of his study and will be ten years out.
We were encouraged to eat 1200 calories a day as soon as possible after surgery. I did this at three weeks post op. We were encouraged to eat lots of protien and few refined carbs. However...unrefined carbs with lots of Fiber were encouraged. I ate oatmeal, potatoes, whole grain toast, nuts, brown rice, etc. The only carbs we actively avoided were sugar, white flour refined stuff, and fruit juice (much better to get it in whole fruit which we were encouraged to eat).
I lost slowly, but I lost to goal. Have been at goal 3 years with the occasional 5 pound backslide...that I promptly address with the bariatric therapist, and lose back to goal. Never takes long...and a little gain is usually a cue that something is stressing me out and I'm regressing to old habits. My program emphasised addressing disordered eating and working on food addiction behavior with new coping behaviors. A bariatric therapist is integral. Don't be without one. Fixing your stomach doesn't fix your head.
I eat 1400-1600 calories a day and maintain well. I walk 10,000+ steps each day and try to get 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day.
I can eat absolutely anything I want now. I do have to plan for indulgent foods and make sure to balance the calories in my day...but after a while, it's getting to be second nature. I eat at events and special occasions and cut back a little for a couple days before or after. It works.
I think my gut bugs have changed (another goal of my program....to change the gut microbiota to resemble the diversity of a healthy weight person). I prefer whole grains, lean protien (lots coming from plant sources), love Beans, mushrooms and potatoes, I shop the produce section more than any other section of the store...love my fruits and veggies. One HUGE change....I pay attention to dietary fiber. I eat at least 25g of Dietary Fiber every day. Most of my fats are plant fats. I do eat meat, but not like most people on here. Meat for me is a special occasion thing, not a staple in my diet. Junk food doesn't taste like it used to. Very honestly. I don't like the taste as much as I used to. If anyone had told me that I would find french fries a turn-off...EVER...I'd have said they were a liar. Loved them. Have no interest in them now....go figure!
Everyone will have a hugely different experience and opinion....and that's ok. People should do what works for them. But my feeling is that my success is down to three things... Learning to balance and be aware of every damned calorie I eat. Eating a high fiber diet with tons of plant protien. Seeing my bariatric therapist PROMPTLY when I know I'm regressing to food addict behavior.
Wishing you the very best. I hope you find a sustainable diet you can tolerate and feel your best eating. Good Luck.

Hellie1028 reacted to TexasMommy80 in When did you start losing hair?
Mine started about 2 weeks ago, and 3.5 months out. I have very thin and fine hair as it is, so it doesn't make me happy. Saying that, while I am shedding more, it is more of an annoyance and not enough to make me worry about going bald. I think for many of us, it is something we notice far more than anyone else.

2.5 months out I was down a total 75 (including pre-and post surgery) and no one had said anything. At 3 months we moved to work from home due to Covid, which meant video calls. As a result, no one really noticed until about 8 or 9 months out when my face really started to thin out. The few people I see in person notice, but it wasn't until I bought some new clothes that fit that it was obvious how much I've lost...

I’m on the purée phase with you, and I’m at about 26 grams of Protein a day. I can’t deal with the shakes anymore, they make me sick. I just got this tuna from Amazon called “Safecatch white tuna,” it’s geared toward pregnant ladies, but it has 24 grams of protein for 3 oz, so I’m hoping it will help me get closer to my requirements.

I can smell thinks pretty strongly especially eggs.
Also my sense of taste intensified with VSG but even further after RNY conversion. Almost everything is too salty or sweet from me. It's kind of annoying but I have learned to live with it.

Hellie1028 reacted to catwoman7 in 3 weeks post op stall/ wrong calibration
it's way too early to wave the white flag. Most of us don't hit that point for months - and some up to two years (depending on your starting BMI). You're likely in a stall. Almost all of us hit our first major stall within the first month after surgery. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Mine was weeks 2 & 3. During week 4, I dropped like 6-8 lbs within a couple of days. Just stick to your program - it'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again.

Hellie1028 reacted to Lily66 in How long did you deal with head hunger post op?
Yes, a battle. One thing that has helped a lot was my Dr. suggesting not going over 2 hours without eating something. When I plan these mini Snacks, most times I’m able to say “okay self, it’s just head hunger. You had something an hour ago and will again in an hour, so hold tight and get over yourself”.
Doesn’t work 100%, but hey, I’ll take 60% help and trust that this muscle memory will get stronger each time I refuse to give in. Good luck!

It is deeply psychologically rooted in me to comfort eat. My family still does it individually. Death, illness, bad news, good news....all of it comes with tons of food from our grandmother straight to our doors. I have literally had a love affair with food for decades. This is like a divorce. Yes I can still have the foods I love but as a treat and in small amounts on occasion. Not daily contact like a close friend. I cant go back.

I was by myself the whole time as well- Covid has really made things crazy.

I ran into someone today who’s husband got sleeved in August. She told me his weight loss has stopped-because he has started drinking soda again, and eating snack foods it sounds like. It just really highlighted for me how vital it is to not try to find ways to go back to how I was eating before. This surgery is not a slam dunk, and it requires a huge change in our relationship with food.

    Congratulations.
Stop experimenting and stick to your plan.
It's difficult to not lose weight in the first few months. So, you can keep experimenting with foods you shouldn't be eating *or* you can stick to plan consistently and you will lose weight either way. You are conditioning yourself. What I eat, how much I eat now = weight loss. You are building your new habits now. Are you building the habits that will get you to goal and keep you there?
I know I'm being "that person" but I've been around for a minute. I've seen the "I can eat anything" posts too often followed up a few months later with "I've stopped losing weight, what do I do?" By time it gets here it's too late. It's back at "I can eat anything" that the change needs to happen.
Focus on your plan now. You can eat anything you want, in moderation, later. Honest.
    Good luck,
    Tek

Dumping is no fun. Which is why I'm glad I dump.
Do you think the folks above that dumped on sugar (or fat) want to repeat the event? What better negative reinforcement for eating wrong things could you ask for?
Yep, dumping helped me get where I am today.
