WhatATool:-) got a reaction from newyorklady20 in 8 months post op and still always hungry...
I had RNY gastric bypass in august 2020. It’s true what they say, that wls is just a tool and you’re still going to have to work hard to get to your goals!

But I’m super surprised that my hunger levels don’t seem to have changed very much. I feel hungry every couple hours, when I was hoping to be one of those people who didn’t think about food very often.

My weight loss has slowed because of this, so I’m wondering if anyone else experienced this and has any tips. Thanks!

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent calcium citrate supplement? The tablets are usually huge and make me really uncomfortable post op. I got some Caltrate fruity chewables, but they’re basically like Tums except they have this insane bitter aftertaste that makes everything I eat or drink afterwards taste gross too. They’ve become one of the worst parts of my day lol.

Hi! I just had RNY on August 4, and I’m doing really well. I didn’t get my weight on surgery day, but I’m down about 15 pounds from the beginning of August. I feel awesome, no nausea, really lucky. Are you thinking about getting the surgery?

Does anyone get a meal kit delivered that you would recommend? I’m really interested but there are now so many options out there it’s hard to weed through them all! Ideally it would be something reasonably priced that has good nutrition options and meals that can be portioned down easily for post op. Thanks!

I'm almost 7 weeks post-op and I've had no trouble eating or drinking anything so far, and no nausea or vomiting. I overate for the first time last night. I picked up a bag of popcorn that someone left sitting on the counter, and it felt so light I figured there couldn't be much in it. So I mindlessly kept eating it while watching TV (usually I measure my food in measuring cups) until it became clear that I was full. Too full. Painfully full. The fullness feeling was not in my chest, where my stomach is, but in my upper abdomen, where the Roux limb is. Gosh it hurt for about two hours, and I tried to vomit but it was too far down to come up, so I just had to bear it. Prior to last night I had not felt full, but I wasn't hungry, either. I think that's the feeling I want. I'll take satisfied over full, because full hurts. And it's not good for my stoma and maintaining my weight in the future. Please don't do what I did!

don't chase the full feeling. A couple of things going on 1) you had some nerves cut during surgery, and it takes them awhile for them to regenerate 2) most of us don't start feeling the restrictions until we start eating solids - like meats. Once you eat something like chicken breast, you'll notice it 3) your full "cues" may be different than they were before surgery. It takes awhile for some of us to recognize them. Until then, just measure out what you're supposed to eat and just eat that...

My experience was almost exactly the same (except I have a sleeve). I have had virtually no nausea in almost 7 weeks. And that’s a great thing. But, I also don’t really ever feel satisfaction or actually feel full. At most, the burp/cramp feeling.
From the beginning I felt that I could eat more than others. Talking to my nutritiousness about it she seemed to think that was really kind of positive since a lot of people can’t keep food down and I can. She also said the low calories that most people are eating early on is because they couldn’t eat more (but not because they should not eat more). I have been losing weight at the right rate for my BMI and from what I can tell I am slightly ahead of average despite all of this. But I so understand how it is frustrating to feel as if your situation is 100% different from most others! 🤗
Fyi - I have an upper gi tomorrow (lots of acid) so we will find out if indeed I have a banana sized stomach! 😂 Actually that little suspicion in your head is really common with people after weight loss surgery! We don’t really think it, but...

WhatATool:-) got a reaction from Shell4451 in Drive to Eat vs. Actual Hunger
So I recently had gastric bypass and I’m recovering well. I haven’t been nauseous at all, one of the lucky ones. I haven’t felt hungry, but also haven’t felt full (still on liquids). But, I still have the drive to eat. I don’t think it’s necessarily emotional eating, because I’m feeling pretty stable and good right now. I just like food, and enjoy eating. It’s almost like I lost a hobby.

I haven’t given in or anything, and it’s really not that bad. I’m trying to focus on my other interests, and I’m guessing that this will level out over time. But I’m curious, anyone else deal with something like this? Any tips?

Your thoughts and feelings are completely normal, especially while you are still on liquids. Once you graduate to solids you will be amazed at the "full" feeling you have after just a few bites. You may also find that your taste buds change too.
food was my hobby too! While I was eating Breakfast, I would be thinking about what I wanted for lunch, etc. I craved fast food, chocolate, etc. Now I'm completely satisfied eating a greek yogurt (and it takes me a while to eat it). Covid has gotten in the way of my social life, but I look forward to the next party I go to, where I can focus solely on the company, and not obsess about when they are putting out dessert! LOL!!

On a constant basis. It's hard, mentally, to go from being a binge eater (I was, not sure about you) to basically having to be on a schedule. But that's what I did. I am on a schedule. I have alarms set on my phone to make sure I eat (some days, I could go all day without) or that I don't overeat (to make sure if I feel like I might binge, I have restraint).
It's relearning habits. It's HARD. But it's doable. My surgery made it so I didn't have a choice about relearning those habits. There are days I wanna graze all day, but I physically cannot.
I do miss the social aspect of food. I miss using it for comfort and when I'm bored. But I have picked up a lot of other hobbies that I never would have tried before, either (I started doing diamond paintings, and got back into doing doodles and writing).
Just hang in there, and keep strong. You will learn when your body actually wants food versus when your head does.

I'm scheduled to have gastric bypass on August 4th, and so I'm finishing the pre-op testing. My EKG came back abnormal. Possible left atrial enlargement, and borderline arrhythmia. They want me to go see my PCP to clear me for surgery, and my appointment with him is on Monday.
But now I'm freaking out! Firstly, is there something wrong with my heart?? But mostly, is this going to tell me I can't have the surgery? I have been working towards it and looking forward to it for so long now. I mean, I think that he'll approve me, considering I don't have any history of heart problems... But I also don't know how he feels about bariatric surgery in general. I've just been going to the surgeon's office for all my tests an appointments because it's easier.
Anyone have this problem in the past?
