I wouldn't think it's pestering to check in and see where they are at. Depends on how many times you have already called :).

Hi guys, newbie here so I apologize in advance if I didn’t post in the right place. I have been thinking about getting VSG for years now. My mom fear-talked me out of it in 2017 but after a 40 lb gain since then, I’m really in need of something. I was very active before running 5 days a week, ran a half marathon, but even with all that only ever got down to 185. I developed a chronic injury from running that has preventing me from being regularly mobile since then, and I’ve gone from 185 to 240. I’m hoping the surgery would take some weight off and some pressure off my joints so they can properly heal and I can get back to an active lifestyle. I’m a very disciplined eater, but the injuries have made me a bit depressed and I’ve been eating for comfort. Surprise surprise.
I’m considering Dr. Alvarez with Endobariatric in Piedras Negras, so I welcome any of his patients to chime in. I have the cash and don’t want to spend the time and effort getting insurance approval when I am in a high deductible plan and would likely pay 8K out of pocket anyway for surgery in the US. Might as well go to Mexico and get it sooner without all the hassle.
Why am I so hesitant to pull the trigger and book the surgery? I guess I’m nervous about complications, nervous about surgery in general, nervous it won’t work. Nervous I will do permanent damage to my body. Someone help give me the boost I need to make this appointment and pay the deposit!
Has anyone done this alone? Given my mom’s pessimism I don’t want to ask her to come with me. I think she would just have bad vibes the entire time and probably freak me out.

I had just started the process when the virus picked up and so far have been able to have my initial consultation, psych evaluation, and 1st nutritional meeting all within 2 weeks of first contact. I hope I am not missing out on too much by not doing office meetings, but they have been doing everything virtually and I am hitting all my action items. Have my 2nd out of 4 nutritional meeting in a couple of weeks, so have been working on eating better and trying to tone up prior to surgery, which would tentatively be in July. It makes it easier when I can't just run out and get my normal fast food :). Hoping those with surgeries coming up can get in soon. So excited for this journey!

Agree 100%. I called my insurance to ask if I was covered, and they provided the full coverage policy for gastric sleeve. This helped a ton! When my bariatric place did the initial check on the insurance they said that I was not covered and would have to be self pay. I told them that I had already checked with my insurance and that they should try again. Come to find out I was covered and the person she spoke to thought she was checking on plastic surgery vs. bariatric surgery.

My PCP just put in the referral for me about a month ago. I haven't heard from them so I called today and the bariatric practice is not scheduling any appointments "until things cool down." I mentioned that it could take a year to which they said, "yeah, maybe." I asked about tele appointments to get me started- nope. I'm so disappointed! They told me to call back in a few weeks to see if they were opening up again. I hope so. I really wish I had settled on this course of action 6 months ago instead. Then I'd already be losing the weight. =(

Been a while since I have been on this forum and so much has changed-in a good way! I reached my (adjusted) goal weight. I went back to school. I have a new career (as a baiatric-focused personal trainer) and I'm excited about my future. Although lots has been derailed because of the virus, the accomplishments are still there and my business will thrive once the fitness industry is able to rebound. For now, I do my coaching virtually and keep up on my fitness by working out with my team via zoom. It's a crazy time but still full of possibilities! I'm so sorry some of your surgeries are being derailed- that is a tough pill to swallow I'm sure. I hope everyone stays healthy and strong. Be kind!

So my Doctor’s office called me yesterday morning to set up my pre-op appointment. I went today at 8am and I’m scheduled to proceed with Gastric Bypass on 4/27 at 6am. Originally, things were postponed, but yesterday they called and told me my insurance approved my surgery and asked me what date I was looking at. I told them asap and they got me scheduled. We were asked to wear a mask and everyone in the office wore them as well. Only about 5 people were allowed in and they had the waiting room spaced out for social distancing. We were also screened for high temperature and any Covid-19 symptoms before we were allowed into the office. I’m excited, yet trying not to get my hopes too high in case I get rescheduled in the next 19 days.

I absolutely understand the disappointment und frustration all of you must feel. I also think it's important to talk about this and no, maybe coming across "a bit selfish" doesn't matter. Come across as "selfish" as you like.
Whenever the disappointment and frustration hits and you're all like "F*ck this damn virus!!", maybe you could remember some things:
    - your surgery is postponed, not cancelled.
    - you wouldn't want to be in a hospital now or in a few weeks down the road if you can help it.
    - ICU capacity is limited and every surgery has the potential to bring on the need for being on the ICU. You don't want to need a bed on the ICU during the next weeks because there might be none available the moment you need it.
    - you don't want to be in immediate recovery from abdominal surgery as long as COVID-19 runs rampant. My revision is 4 weeks ago now, the fixing of a hernia only a week and I'm asking myself if my immune system is already as competent as it usually is - not a fun thing to ask yourself these days.
When feeling all of this completely understandable frustration and disappointment maybe try to remember that WLS is always abdominal surgery including general anesthesia with lots of complications being possible and not a quick and unproblematic surgery so many patient's recovery is really easy from.
I'm absolutely sure that all people on this thread are completely aware of the things I wrote above. However, it can be hard to remember when disappointment and frustration hits.
Hang in there! Your surgery is postponed, not cancelled.
