that's actually really rare. I'm surprised she's had two patients like that.

there also aren't that many more complications with bypasses than there are with the sleeve. The sleeve is more popular now because they're easier for surgeons to do, and patients are more afraid of getting the bypass - they think it's more invasive (although to be honest, I find the sleeve just as "invasive"...)

I learned about these complications from a noted surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital noted as the World's Best Hospital in the New England Journal of Medicine. I was told that all hospitals are "cutting back on the bypass" as much as they can because of these types of complications which are not SO rare. I never would post anything like this if I weren't certain I could trust the source

  2. Dear heaven:

Your body shut down and you couldn't go to the bathroom for over a year?? ..... and you are considering surgery again?

I had a sleeve done on February 26 and have only lost 22 lbs with strict dieting. I asked my surgeon if she would do a full bypass for me. Her answer was an emphatic NO. She told me that they are doing fewer and fewer full bypasses because of too many complications. She had two patients who are receiving nutrition from a feeding tube. Imagine, they ate compulsively and gained a ton of weight and now cannot eat at all. It seems to me that your body shutting down for over a year would be impetus enough to never have elective surgery again.

    Just sayin'

  3. I would love to hear from anyone who has tried Ozempic to help weight loss. I had a sleeve done in early March and have only lost 20 pounds. I had an appointment with the physician at the Weight Center where I had my surgery and she suggested Ozempic to augment my surgery. Has anyone had any experience with this?

    Best to all,

I use shakes mine luckily taste like milk shake and only use Water but sometimes I'll add a shot of coffee or Milo for caffeine that I need to get my day started

i actually don't do much exercise just ate very little calories for months and lived off shakes for months but I had bypass and weight has come off quickly.

Could you tell me please what brand of shakes you use. I'd like to know because if they already taste like milk you're one up on me.

  5. Hi Folks:

I had my gastric sleeve on February 26 and have been losing at a snail's pace. I think one of my problems is not enough exercise. I'm not complaining, just stating the facts.

I'm in the habit of having Protein Shake for Breakfast for 160 calories. My favorite flavor is vanilla. The got very boring and was really just like drinking milky water....so I put my thinking cap on and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

Instead of using all Water, I used mostly water but 4 tablespoons of half-and-half. I added 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. I substitute some of the water with ice cubes, put in all in the blender and whip the heck out of it.

It takes a lot to get me excited about anything having to do with dieting, but I really wanted to share this. It's changed my breakfast from Ho-Hum to Yum-Yum! It adds 80 calories to your daily intake, but SO worth it!

    Best to all,

    Grace

I noticed Hair loss starting a few weeks ago (mid way through month 3). Now I am seeing a scary amount of hair coming out in the shower. I have really fine hair so it makes me nervous but I knew going in it was a possibility. So far no bald Patches and it looks OK when it's down but if that changes I'll figure out if I need to cut it, where it up, etc... I have been taking Biotin since pre-surgery but as said, it just helps the new hair (Oh - and my nails look fabulous :) )

OHHHH Biotin helps your nails? Interesting!

It has been a journey, the last several months the hardest! The down 2 up 1 is driving me crazy after the dropping easier for the first 6 months. Now I struggle for 5 pounds a month. But today I'm going to sit back and enjoy the loss and feel very proud of myself. I never thought I'd be here a year ago. I was still trying to qualify for the surgery and gaining weight each day. Today is the start of my new me and new life. I can walk every day without knee pain and look forward to it too. For those of you thinking about it just do it. For those who think you are too old, I'm 73 and did it. Good luck to everyone out there and please stay healthy!

I will note the part of the message above which says "For those of you who think you are too old, I'm 73 and did it." Well, I'm 81 and did it :)

GREAT BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU SANDRA.

  8. Hello all:

I underwent a gastric sleeve on February 26, 2020. I was told that this type of surgery can cause Hair loss. .... but we hear what we want to hear. I'm losing my hair at an alarming rate. Anyone else experiencing this? In addition to that problem, my weight loss is at a crawl. Since February 26 I've lost only 16 pounds.... so now I won't just be fat, - I'll be fat and bald. Any input would be much appreciated.

    Best,

    Grace

40 pounds is actually pretty good. My surgery was on 2/19 and I have lost only 25 pounds.I know it is discouraging but be patient. You are learning a better way to eat a slow weight is healthier. I concentrate how I am feeling rather the numbers.

My goodness, I would be absolutely thrilled with a 40 pound loss in that timeframe. My loss, in comparison is 18 pounds in the same timeframe and I am taking in 700-800 calories daily.

Sorry - but this is not being "a down to earth person who tells it like it is." This is being bitchy.

Let me "tell it like it is." What IAmGrace wrote is THE answer to your question. There is no other answer.

If the answer to your question is so obvious to you - then why are you asking it?

RJAN: If you followed the sequence of posts here, you will see that I didn't ask a question. Don't call me a b***h before you know what you're talking about.

  11. If I "lashed out". I sincerely apologize. I am a down to earth person who tells it like it is. I don't mean to hurt anyone. I took it that this forum is provided for us to tell the readers what we are going through, good or bad. I appreciate that people offer support and I certainly don't mean to lash out.

I’m confused why you are posting. If the surgery doesn’t help you and you want to throw in the towel nobody is stopping you.

People are trying to help you but you already have it figured out.

    Best of luck.

I posted just to let people know that I'm completely disheartened and am on the verge of not trying at all anymore. I was crying out for help. Does that clear up your confusion?

Are you willing to share a typical day's menu for you? Are you actually measuring or weighing your food or eyeballing it? What are your macros? How much Protein vs carbs? How much no calorie fluids? Are you exercising? Do you have any medical conditions or on medication that may slow down weight loss?

I'm happy to share a typical day's menu:

    TODAY

    Breakfast was a Protein Shake

I am a little shorter than you. Our calorie deficit isn't going to be all that high even if we are only eating 600 to 700 calories per day. The older we get, the shorter we are, the less we weigh, our gender means our maintenance calories are low, hence, our deficit isn't as great as someone taller, younger and weighing much more. We lose slower and lower. That said, you are in deficit and probably should be losing some weight but you have been posting for what seems like weeks that you haven't perhaps you are in a normal stall?

As we progress, it is likely that there are stalls,,sometimes these stalls can last up to two to three weeks as our bodies adjust to the different foods as well as likely an increase in calories. I have been sitting around the same weight for about a week or two. It is what it is, I have read enough here and elsewhere to know that it is normal and that if I stick to my guidelines that the weight loss will kick in again.

What type of foods are you eating: pureed, soft, solids? I know at my stage of pureed and soft foods that I am unlikely to feel full if I eat the foods that are on my list and in the volumes that are in my guidelines.

Going from your posts I think you are dwelling too much on scale weight and there isn't sufficient focus on non scale victories that are likely for you...improved blood pressure, lower cholestrol, improved fitness (if you are exercising that is, exercise isn't only for weight loss its great for mental health too), clothes fitting better, improved blood sugar levels if pre diabetic or diabetic, etc etc etc

Can you usually lose 15 lbs. in a month and a half? I feel sorry for you that you're so upset, but I don't really understand it. If it was the worst decision you've made in your life, why are you unwilling to talk to a therapist about it? I'm sure you could get a teleahealth appointment with one after the weekend.

I can easily lose 15 lbs on my own in a month and a half. I'm sure I have lost this on my own.

I never said I was unwilling to talk with a therapist although I do think it would be spitting in the wind. From what I see here the RNY is far more effective than the sleeve. I do wish I had input about that before I went under the knife.
