I decided in 1 day. Literally went from knowing nothing to going to the seminar the next day.

Then 3 days later I was in the surgeons office signing on and beginning preop requirements. Around 5 months later surgery, it could have been sooner but I took my children on an extended vacation.

    When you know, you know.

I decided in a day too and the following day I did the seminar online. Unfortunately, I can't get into the surgeon as quickly.

For me, Protein Shakes made from Protein Powder and Water, even after minutes in a blender still maintain a gritty texture. As an alternative. you may want to check out the Protein Drinks from “Premier Protein”. They have a smooth, milk-like texture, completely non-gritty and come in several delicious flavors. They are low in sugar, Vitamin enriched and pack 30g of Protein per serving. I plan to use these once I get past the Clear Liquids only phase after my surgery.

I acutally use Premier Protein. Typically I mix the powder in Milk or Fairlife Milk as I can't stand it with Water. I'll use the premade shakes if I an on the go or have to, but after a few the taste starts to bother me.

Yeah, that's a bit different that you are going thru your primary doctor for your weigh-ins -- I guess it depends upon your insurance plan.

@mello1 It may be because Insurance is covering mine. Several other people I know that have had weight loss surgery have done it the same way I am. As long as the insurance company is paying and I have to pay very very little, I don't mind.

  4. My job is relatively sedentary and I have the option to work from home. I was thinking of taking a week to a week and a half off, and then working from home for another 2 weeks or so. My plan is to start working from home as soon as 8 am able, even if it is only half days. I have no back up, other than my supervisor and my work can't sit while I am out. He is happy with thos compromise and I know won't push me to come back before I am ready. But he also knows I love my job and will be back as soon as I can.

  5. I got my initial consultation for April 2nd also. I asked to be put on a waiting list for a cancellation and it worked. I got called this morning and will see the surgeon in 2 days. If you haven’t yet call them and ask to be put on that list. Good luck
Good for you. I did ask to be called if there were any cancellations, so we will see.

Also, I have been doing quite a bit of reading about it and it seems to be a good thing to consume. I have arthritis and fibromyalgia and it seems like it helps. Perhaps it depends on who is using it and why?

@mgrand I also have fibromyalgia. How do you feel the collagen has helped you?

I don't know how much you can actually do - with 100 lbs to lose, you're probably going to have some. If you're young, you'll have more elasticity than someone's who's old so you may fare a bit better, but you'll still likely have some.

I'm fairly young, 42 next month. My biggest concern is my arms. I live in Florida, love to wear tank tops, and have a beautiful upper arm tattoo that runs from my shoulder to my elbow (not a sleeve as it doesn't wrap around my arm). I'm already starting to save for the surgery if I need it.

That protocol is similar to mine, except that I met with the surgeon on my first visit (haven't seen him since though). I had 3 weight check ins which amounts to the 90 day minimum required for my insurance. It sounds like your insurance requires 6 months.

In addition to the nutritional consultation and psych eval, I had to have an endoscopy, EKG, and blood work. My regular physician had me do an echo, bone density, colonoscopy, and sleep study earlier last year (part of her baselining me - over 60). I also had a kidney work up, so I'm done. That's what happens when your primary doctor is a teaching physician...

My weigh in are at my primary doc which is in a different practice that the surgeon. My primary did mention that based on my labs, additional things might be required, but since I am fairly healthy, she didn't think so. I am trying to get my initial consult with the surgeon moved up as April is so far away.

  9. Congratulations on acknowledging that you have a problem with alcohol and resize something is wrong. Are you interested in 12 steps? If not can you meet with your doctor? My husband and I stopped drinking a little over a year ago. It was very rough for him. I was never a big drinker and never drank beer, so me quitting in support of him was right to do. Do you have sober friends? We found out that hanging out with other sober peep and having fun while sober, retrained our brains so to speak to start to realize that we can have fun without alcohol.

If you need to talk, PM me.

  10. I have to get see a psychologist, but my Primary Doc told me they are looking for unmedicated psychological issue, not feeling of depression from being overweight, though they can help with that. She said "you aren't batshit crazy so don't worry about it." I'm sure you will be ok. We all have negative feelings about our weight. Isn't that partly why we are doing this?

I would just make sure you see your doc in March for it to count for 2/6 check ins. Or if the surgeon can see you at the end of March. I believe if you skip a month it restarts. All insurances are different but just to play it safe try to get seen in March.

I see my primary in March for my 2nd weigh in. That is an easy appointment to get so I won't miss any with my Primary. Plus she is giving me my Migraine shot each month, so the weigh in visit kills 2 birds with one stone.

    My insurance is Aetna.

  12. Well I got my initial consultation with the surgeon set up but it isn't until April 2nd!!!! Has anyone else had to wait that long?

    In addition, my insurance requires

    • 6 weight check visits with my primary doc
    • 1 nutritional consultation
    • Psychological evaluation

At least my primary doc knows the process and said my visit on 2/19 will count as the 1st weigh in. Based on what I have seen, this is pretty standard. My letter from the surgeon (and my calculations) put the surgery cost at $520, so I guess I can't complain about the length of time. So it is looking like I will have surgery sometime in August or September. Just in time to not be able to enjoy my husband's favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.

Marena compression garments are used after liposuction to reduce swelling and helped my daughter after her 150 pound weight loss after RNY. She has very little excess skin, even on her belly where she carried all of her weight. They’re not cheap, but you only need a couple of full body garments. I’m wearing them now after my vsg and they really do help A LOT!!

The compression gathers help with the loose skin afterwards? Is there a specific reason why this helps? I will have to look into getting some.
