liquid diet starts on Tuesday for surgery on March 30th! My fridge is now full of Protein Shakes and my cupboards are full of broth and Jello mix! I know it’s going to be difficult, but I’m also so excited. Walking through the store today, I browsed the other foods but obviously just stuck to my shopping list and it felt so freeing. I can’t wait to have this tool to help break my dependency on food and impulses.

Everything went well I just had really bad gas pains on my left abdomen area and shoulders when I breathe in. Everyone keeps saying it’s normal but I always wonder if it’s a leak. I can’t even sleep on my left side or I get a sharp pain and if I get up it’s like a spasm of pain

newyorklady20 reacted to Lahela in Any good post op pureed/liquid food recommendations?
I am coming up fast on my surgery, 3 days and counting. So I am attempting to food prep for recovery since I have 4 children ramging in age from 11 months to 12 years old., my hubby will have his hands full trying to take over as Mr Mom while I recover for the first 2 weeks.

I am hoping to have easy recovery meals planned out for me so all he has to do is microwave them for me or I can just throw them together easily.

I am planning so far on mostly pureed Soups but mostly because I cant think of other things that appeal to me. Blending eggs is just not something I am going to be able to do. I dont eat fish, canned chicken, eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese or tuna. In the nutrition class that was almost all the recommended things. 🤦‍♀️

I have tried since october to be get use to cottage cheese, greek yogurt and canned chicken. But I havent been able to stomach any of it.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi OP, I'm in a similar situation. When doing the supervised stage I stayed around 41/40 BMI. (I'm 5'10" and 283 at my highest) I am approved and have a surgery date but now as its getting closer, I am having the same concerns - its not like I'm hundreds of pounds overweight, could I really do this on my own if I tried harder, committed myself, etc. I'm really just scared about 1. dying in surgery, and 2. the amount of pain I will be in when I wake up and the days immediately after. I feel ashamed that it has come to this, and like I am making a very extreme decision to solve a problem that maybe I could fix on my own if I just tried harder.
But then I also remember that I am 36, and have been yo-yo dieting and struggling to lose weight, maintain it, fail, gain weight, convince myself I'm happy no matter how much I weigh, repeat repeat repeat since I was in my teens. I don't even have a goal weight, I just want to be healthy and stabilize at a reasonable place and stay there. And that thought is what keeps me going and I think is what will carry me through the fear hopefully successfully straight to the surgery.
No matter what our BMIs are, our histories are, our reasons are... if you feel like its what is right for you and will help you get back on track with the life that you know will make you happy, then its worth it.

    Hello,
My surgeon obstructed my biles on 3/3 which caused me to throw up my biles for a week. I had emergency surgery to correct the issue on 3/12. ( oh my goodness never knew how major of a surgery that was). I’m home now feeling a lot better just grouchy because my new belly doesn’t like artificial sweetener like my old belly did lol. Thank you so much for checking on me.

I am seven months post-op and have had a DREAM recovery. There are no foods that I have found that I can't tolerate. I COULD eat pretty much anything I want at this point.
I do occassionally (very rarely) have a coke zero or diet dr. pepper. I can't drink a whole 12oz can and I have to drink it VERY, VERY slowly. The carbonation just makes me uncomfortable. But, sometimes I will have it as a treat because it tastes SO GOOD! Often, I will find myself having a diet soda instead of ice cream when my husband wants to go to the DQ. It makes me happy and it still has fewer calories and carbs than even sugar free ice cream.
I don't eat steak much any more. I used to love a good rare (raw) steak. Now I have to chew it into oblivion for it to be anywhere near comfortable in my sleeve and that ruins it for me. I think I've had it once in the seven months since surgery. I still like the taste, and can eat it if I just absolutely have a craving and have to have it, but I really don't miss it at all.
I don't like fried foods anymore. I will still sneak one of my husband's french fries every now and again, but ONE is about it. I also have given up chips. Will occassionally have corn chips with ALOT of pico de gallo and LOVE vegetable chips. But those greasy potato chips that I used to love... gross!
So, don't think of it as stuff that you "can't ever have again". It will be more like stuff that you could have, but won't really want anymore.
Good luck! This was a fairly easy decision for me and I don't regret it at all! But, its different for everyone and I'm glad you're considering all the pros and cons up front!

MK, I'm a year out and over 120 pounds down. I drink Decaf diet coke, about 1 a day, sometimes 2. I also use a straw in my Water cup every day. I eat bread very rarely these days because it makes my sleeve hurt, and I used to LOVE fresh hot bread. I baked it every week for my family pre-op. Now I do well to eat a whole small tortilla...and I'm full for way too long afterwards, so I make that a very rare thing.
As for what you can never have, there's not much that you can't ever have again. That's the beauty and frustration of the sleeve. You CAN eat whatever you want once you are past the post-op diet, but you'll find yourself needing to make better choices in order to meet your Protein goals. I eat very few veggies these days and find that I have to deliberately plan them into my diet, but I eat anything I like Protein wise. My sleeve doesn't like bread and it doesn't like spicy foods, but I don't miss them either.
For me, the sleeve has been a godsend..and I'd do it over again if I had to in order to lose almost 120 pounds in just over a year. What would you give up to weigh 120 pounds less? I think that bread and spicy food was a great trade for me!
    Good luck, whatever you decide.
