21 Medication Rules after Gastric Bypass
There are certain pills that you should not be taking after surgery because they will either irritate your pouch, such as all pills in the NSAIDs catagory or pills that just won't be absorbed like they should. Any pills with enteric coating (kind of like a candy coating) or any extended release type med may not be absorbed like it is supposed to. If any of your meds do fall into those catagories you will want to get them changed. Those meds need the gastric juices to break them down and after RNY those juices just aren't there to do the job until well down your intestinal system which won't be enough time to break those meds down.
So basicly, you want to avoid any meds that are extended release, delayed, controlled, sustained or any medication that is an NSAIDs.
    Over-the-counter NSAIDs are:
Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Orudis KT, Ibuprofen, Excederin
    Prescribed NSAIDs are:
Motrin, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Toradol, Lodine, Feldene, Indocin, Daypro, Relafen, Voltaren and Celebrex.
There is the belief by some surgeons out there that even one NSAIDs can cause some kind of damage to your pouch and they strongly recommend staying away from them, if possible. If medically there is a reason to be taking them, such as the use of low dose asprin for heart conditions, it is okay to take them but you should also be placed on some kind of protectant such as Carafate or Cytotec.
If you are unsure if any of the meds you are on fall into any of these catagories talk to your Pharmacist, they will know. It isn't a bad idea to let your Pharmacist know that you are a Gastric Bypass patient. They can list it in your information almost like an allergy so that if you are ordered a med that you shouldn't be on an alert will be generated. There are ALOT of physicians out there that don't know this kind of information it is our respondsibility to make sure they are aware of it.
Here are 21 basic rules we should all follow in regards to our meds:
    1. If side effects appear or increase, consult your doctor or your pharmacist about dosage or other medication options.
    2. First-pass effect medications may not provide effective absorption at the currant dosages. Check dosage or check for alternative medications that do not have first pass effect. (your Pharmacist will know if any of your meds are "first-pass" meds)
    3. Medications that are in a liquid or solution form will be absorbed faster than those that are solids. Check for liquid forms of medications.
    4. No extended-release, sustained-release, controlled-release, timed-release or osmotic pump medications.
    5. Many medications can also have gastrointestinal side-effects like gas, diarrhea, Constipation or intestinal cramping.
    6. Read the pamphlet attached to the prescription bag for potential side-effects.
    7. You should not take any NSAIDs without a protectant such as Cytotec or Carafate. EVER!!!!
    8. Be able to recognize an NSAIDs when you see one.
    9. Use a protectant if taking daily low-dose aspirin for heart health or to prevent stroke.
    10. Check all PMS over the counter medications (OTC) for NSAID ingredients.
    11. Read all OTC medication packaging to check for NSAIDs ingredients.
    12. Inhaled steroids for asthma are okay.
    13. Taking steroids of any kind, even by injection, requires taking a protectant as well.
    14. Medications commonly used in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis such as Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva have the potential to cause gastrointestinal ulceration. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about alternatives.
    15. Do not continue to take medications that have been discontinued.
    16. If dosages have been changed, do not finish out a previous dosage just because it is there. CHange the dosage immediately unless instructed otherwise by your physician.
    17. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any of your medications are fat soluble. If so, stay in touch with the prescribing physician and report your currant weight every month for possible dosage changes. (as the amount of fat in your body changes your dosages may also need to be changed)
    18. Tell all medical providers about your status as a weight loss surgery patient. (Lap-Banders too!)
    19. Keep all your scripts at one pharmacy if possible.
    20. Meet and get to know your local pharmacists. They truly can be invaluable friends.
    21. Remember to have everyone work as a team for you! You're worth it!
One other word of warning when it comes to taking Tylenol. You MUST watch the amount of Tylenol you are taking. No more than 4,000mg in a 24 hour period. You can cause yourself liver damage with Tylenol overdose. You need to read your labels. Look to see if things have Tylenol or acetamenophin in them. Vicodan has Tylenol so if you are taking Vicodan or Lortab make sure you aren't adding a lot of Tylenol on top of it. That is why it is important to read the information on those pharmacy bags and on otc medications.

Honey may be trail and error. Perhaps try regular first before the medicinal stuff.
My surgeon didn't want anyone smoking/vaping nicotine products and as for cannabis he said dont tell him (I'm sure for liability sake. 😂)

I use it for my pcos and insomnia. I don’t get high then go eat. It was just a question because before a teaspoon or less of honey worked better then weed. And didn’t know if I could get something I know works for try a different cbd product.

I would worry about the sugar in the honey causing dumping syndrome...you might try a half dose and see if you tolerate it. There are some CBD products that have no honey in it, maybe try that?

Before surgery I would use cbd honey to help me sleep. I am currently smoking weed but The honey always helped me sleep better. Did anyone have any issues eating honey after surgery? I don’t wanna buy a $60 honey if I can’t eat it 😂

I was so stressed over finals last year, (yay for finishing my nursing prerequisites), I found out I can still manage to eat an entire bag of the cheesy jalapeño Cheetos (or 2! 😫). It took me a few hours but I did it. After my last final, I made my husband swear to never let me buy them again! (VSG May 2016 and I’ve been maintaining my 140lbs weight loss for almost 9 months now)

Confessions! They make my catholic schoolgirl heart flutter. Anyway, ten days into the two week liquid diet I screech into the Burger King parking lot like the getaway driver in a bank robbery. Order a small onion ring (sans sauce-I'm health conscience like that) and woof them down. As I'm licking my fingers I think how guilty I should feel and I should probably cry or something but I couldn't squeeze out a single tear. Funny thing is, I don't even like Burger King and there were way better options across the street but I couldn't be bothered to do a U turn.

Aww I’m so sorry to hear this.

you’re going to hate me for saying this, but there’s probably a reason why things had to be rescheduled. Things tend to happen for a reason (I think). And this could mean anything from something being wrong at the clinic, to something being wrong with the doctor that operating..who knows.

So what is yall's Pre-op diet? I feel like mine is weird. They just said low cal, low carb, and high Protein for 10 days prior and nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day of. I just think it's weird cause almost everyone else has to do some sort of liquid diet prior to surgery.
  16. Congrats!

    To @@heartofthetinman ...
Reading your initial and subsequent posts, I think you are related to some of the most ignorant, selfish people I have ever read of. Sorry to talk that way about your people.
They aren't educated about this surgery. Yet they refuse to be educated about it.
They aren't showing you any love -- probably because they aren't loving people.
Your husband really is an asshole. Sight unseen.
Here's what it boils down to: Ultimately, each of us is responsible for the life we get. No matter what others do that affect us we all have to then respond. You can respond by caving in and becoming *their* victim (probably wouldn't be the first time you did that). OR you can make your decisions and have the conviction to follow through with your convictions.
Accept that your family isn't going to support you -- at least not on the front end of this, and maybe not on the back end either. Maybe never.
And what if you were wildly successful with your WLS and they never supported you -- because they (semi-consciously) felt how wrong they'd been, but didn't have the balls to own up to their ignorance and errors? You could still go on and live a much, much, much better and longer life than you will live as an obese person with all the health issues that come with that.
You can bitch about them. And that's OK. But you still have to make your own decision. And you have to stick with it every day thereafter -- if you truly want to build a better life for yourself.
I honestly, truly wish for you a better, happier, healthier life than you've got now. Things can get much better for you if you choose that different life.

All I took out of my bag was my phone, my power bank, and my hairbrush. Probably would've worn chapstick too, but I didn't bother. I packed a couple pads just in case I started in the hospital, but I didn't start my cycle until the day after discharge. Wore the same clothes I came in, but did not wear my bra when leaving. My Kindle and deodorant were neglected; I simply showered when I got home. The hospital will not like it if you wear lotion to the hospital. You're going to be given sanitary wipes to completely clean off when you are there (plus antibacterial soap to use prior to arrival).
I barely had enough energy to go to the bathroom, walk down the hallway, watch TV, and read social media. You'll be sleeping most of the time you aren't being poked and prodded for medical tests.
Not necessarily for the hospital, but I'd pack a pillow and leave it in the car for when it's time to go home. The ride home was bumpy and I coughed a lot so it helped having that brace.

I'm such an over planner too! I have a basket of things I've been adding to for post op. My plan for the hospital is to bring:
Carmex Biotin Mouth Spray (I've seen a bunch of people post about dry mouth and this helping) Ear buds Phone/Charger Pillow Toothbrush/toothpaste Lotion Really loose athletic pants/t-shirt/zip up fleece to wear home Brush Dry Shampoo (yeah I'm vain!) And really that's it. I thought about my ipad and slippers, but I hear over and over about people not using their laptops of ipads, and frankly I can do anything on my phone that I can do on my ipad.
Since I live a couple of hours from where I will be having surgery, the plan is for me to stay two nights.

I don't think I even brought PJ's - and they had me in a hospital gown anyway, so I wouldn't have needed them. They also gave me those skid-free socks to put on. A lot of people like Chapstick because their lips get really dry. Honestly, I slept most of the time I was there, so I really didn't need much of anything. My husband brought my laptop over, but I was too tired and "out of it" to use it. Other than my phone and a change of clothes to wear home, I don't think I used much. Oh - a lot of people like a pillow to hold over their stomach on the way home.....
