I had bypass because I had GERD and my surgeon wouldn't do tge sleeve. No GERD now. 8 months post bypass and have never dumped, but I am very strict with my sugar intake. I'm not sick all the time either. If you even have mild GERD the sleeve has the potential to make it worse. Good luck whichever you choose.

I have moderate acid reflux and was initially scheduled for a sleeve. I talked to my surgeon and he decided that a MBP was better for me. I'm concerned about bile reflux with the MBP, but a RNY doesn't have a reflux issue of any kind. If I were you, I would not get a sleeve and go for the RNY....just my opinion though.

but how come people keep on talking about restriction starting after liquids. Cant you only drink certain amounts too?

Your sleeve or pouch should have far less capacity for good than your previous stomach did. Hence you are “restricted” in how much you can eat.

My Md had guidelines that I could only eat strained creamed Soups and liquids the first 1-2 weeks. That included yogurt, Protein Shakes 2 days after surgery and then cottage cheese and refined Beans began at week 2/3. However it is hard to drink or eat much initially. I used a shot glass to get 2 ounces at a time and a timer so every 15 minutes I would drink 2 ounces. Once I was on soft foods like 1 egg or tuna it initially took 45 minutes to eat that then a week or so later 30 minutes, then eventually 20 minutes etc.
food wasn't appealing and after a few bites I felt like I just ate a Thanksgiving dinner. It wasn't painful but just that blah I'm done feeling. I think around 3/4 months I could drink a 11 oz. Protein Shake in 30-45 minutes, eat a 5oz cup of yogurt or 1 egg in 20 minutes but not much more in one sitting. Suddenly at 6 months I could comfortably eat about a half cup of food total if some of it was soft. Not a half cup of chicken, but a 1/4 cup of Protein and a 1/4 cup of soft veggies. Now at 9 months sometimes I can eat almost a cup in one sitting in a normal amount of time like 10-15 minutes but usually it's closer to 1/2 to 3/4. I don't feel deprived or over full.

liquids go through your stomach a lot faster than something dense like a chicken breast will.

I can drink pretty much any quantity I want, but food is another story. I can drink a 20 oz bottle of Water in 15 minutes, but barely 1/2 cup of food over the course of an hour. I’m 3 months out from VSG.

Yea liquids are easy for me to but soon as I started yoghurt I felt full for a few hours.. Solid stuff takes longer to go through than liquids...

I just got this kind of "keurig" for Vitamins. It's called Tespo. It blends all of my daily bariatric vitamins so I can drink them instead of take them in pill form. I'm supposed to take 2 servings a day, but when I try to take them I just end up puking uncontrollably and it ruins my whole day in regards to being able to eat anything. Has anyone had any similar problems to vitamins like this at all?

How hard is the recovery with bypass? How is the "dumping" ? Do you find you are sick a lot?

A guy asking if size matters?
    Oh, sorry...
A 1 oz nominal starting size for a pouch is what I have always seen referenced. Does it matter, or the shape that the doc makes it? I don't know, but I suspect that both are minor points of technique, and the more important thing is how does your doc's patients do overall? As to the science of it, I think that this is one of those areas that leans more into artistry than science.
In sleeve land, some made a big deal over what bougie size did the surgeon use to form the sleeve, yet that seems to make very little difference overall; indeed, my wife had a relatively huge sleeve done for her DS, about double the initial volume of mine, and yet her meal size after fifteen years is roughly the same as mine - sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. Further, while an RNY pouch may start at about an ounce, a typical VSG sleeve starts at about 2 oz, yet after a few weeks or months, meal size is about the same for either.
From what I have seen over the years, with both RNYs and VSGs, the biggest success factor is how one uses the tool that they have been provided with their WLS, rather than which one was done, or what detail size differences there may have been.

I went into my first consult thinking about the sleeve, mainly because I didn't want my plumbing to be rerouted. However, with my constant GERD, my team highly suggest the bypass which is supposed to fix the GERD. I don't understand how it does that yet, but I'm going to go with what my medical team advises since they've done hundreds of these surgeries and have probably seen cases like mine before.
In the end, make the decision that is right for you, and trust your doctors have your best interests at heart.

I chose bypass, and I'm very happy with that choice. Complications can happen with either surgery. I only wanted to do this once, and chose bypass because I thought it gave me, personally, the best shot at success. There are tons of very successful sleevers, though. Ultimately go with your gut! (Pun intended!)
