VSG was one week ago. I’m struggling staying hydrated. I am imagining having to eat at some point and still managing to get a minimum of 65oz of Fluid. Does it get easier to manage that? When?

Hello! I am 3 weeks out. I am actually eating soft foods now, and I am still struggling with the Fluid. One thing that made it easier is I was not counting the Water I was using in my Protein Shakes, and now I am, so that helped. I found it easier to drink crystal light with about 50% more water than recommended. I also am lucky because I really like chicken Bone Broth, and that gives me fluids and some Protein. I also have bought a variety of herbal teas; I like mint, ginger and a licorice tea. I add a little Stevia, and it is nice break from plain water or the sweet, sweet taste of the protein shakes or the crystal light. The first couple of weeks I was eating a lot of frozen popsicles, sugar free. They are 2 oz of fluids per small pop, so not a great bang for your buck. Good luck, it does get easier, but I am still really conscious of making myself drink all day. On the upside, you do have to get up from your desk a lot to go to the bathroom!

  2. Hey all! Here we are in post-surgery :) I had my sleeve done 3 weeks ago today. It seems longer, to be honest. Today was my first day back at work; I usually work until around 6, but by 3:30 I was pretty tired and not getting anything done, so I called it a day.

I am on "Soft" foods now; There is a little more variety, which is great, but it takes a lot longer to eat it! To give you an idea of what I'm eating, I had a hard boiled egg and 1/3 of a mashed banana for breakfast; 2 oz of rotisserie chicken for lunch, and a Protein Drink for a snack. I am having a turkey sausage and cauliflower rice for dinner. I'll still need some Protein and of course fluids so I'll have a cup of Bone Broth later this evening. I'm not really hungry, but I do know when it is around time to eat. I feel really good overall; I went to the gym yesterday and did some Water exercise (nothing too strenuous and no core work, not that I am exactly good at core work); Went for a 20 minute walk at lunch just to get some steps in and the blood pumping a bit. I am averaging 8K steps a day, a couple of times I have gotten my full 10K in.

I did get a cold (!) after being at the hospital to see my surgeon last week; I think the flu at the beginning of the month, then the surgery, how low my calories are, and not being able to take the Vitamins until I was 10 days out has left me pretty susceptible to all the germs floating around at the hospital. Hopefully a cold is the worst I'll do, given the news about the corona virus.

I've only lost about 13 pounds since surgery, which I should not say "only"; 13 pounds in 3 weeks is pretty ok with me. I know some people lose a lot more, and probably some less, and I'm happy with slow(ish) and steady right now.

I'd love to hear how you all are doing! Hope everyone is healthy and healing and happy.

  3. My sleeve was complete on the 27th, released 2 days later due to severe spasms when drinking. My surgeon did not want to release me from fear of dehydration. I'm finally home now, today is my last day of clear liquids. Full liquids during next 16 days then progress to soft foods. I still struggle to get in 96 ounces of liquids. The surgeon repaired a hernia that he said would've been bad if not repaired.
Blended vegetable Soup is on my list of full liquids. Does anyone have any blended soup recipes? I don’t have a blender but willing to purchase one. Also, please share what has gotten you through this stage. I'm not hungry per se but I'm ready for the change in foods.
@3sonsitk welcome! 96 ounces of Fluid is a lot!! I struggled to get to 60. I did not have a pureed stage, instead I did day 10 to 20 on smooth foods, and I just started soft. chicken Bone Broth was and is a miracle to me, it tastes great and gives you a little Protein, to boot. I also found a high protein mushroom soup mix on this site I like. I was sick of the sweet taste of everything else. Good luck!

Fairlife Core is made by CocaCola and packs 26g of sugar. That is ridiculous amount of sugar for weight loss. Also, its source of Protein is neither whey or caesin. So low quality source of Protein.< br />

My nutritionist warned about the Core shakes because of the 26g of sugar. However, the milk has more protein, more Calcium and less sugar than regular milk, and I like the taste. She had no problems with the milk. I use the 1%, and I use it to make cream of wheat, and I have also made a Protein Shake with Iconic Protein Powder.

I had my surgery on Tuesday. Day one was ok, day two - terrible, TERRIBLE nausea. Threw up 3 times. Finally got home and threw up some more. Called my doctor and they said to come into the ER. I told them I didn't want to be admitted and wanted to wait it out. Now my temp has been hovering in the low 99s.

Today, I got a wave of nausea over me. I have phenergan suppositories which usually work wonders, but this nausea is not going away. Slowly sipping on Gatorade zero and Water. Took my temp and it's 100.0 - not sure what's going on or if I should just go back to the hospital.

I know I'm kinda asking for medical advice, but mostly just seeing if you guys experienced this 3 days post op from RNY.

    Thanks,

    Dianna

I am going to just echo the above; A fever this soon after surgery needs to be evaluated medically, and you really can't wait. I am hoping that you have by now gotten to the ER and been evaluated and are on the upswing. Let us know.

I'm home. I had a terrible time with nausea and vomiting. I was seriously composing a goodbye letter to my family. Two teeth broken during intubation. will have to worry about that next week. stiff and sore shoulder but better in fits and starts

Oh my, I am so sorry you have had such a rough go of it! Glad that you are seeing improvement! Hang in there!

Had my surgery yesterday around 10:00 am. So glad it’s over. Everything seemed to go well I just can’t lay down or pass any gas so the pain is rough. Nurses don’t give anything because they say gas meds don’t work because this gas is within the cavity of the body. I just hope this passes soon. Anyone have a cure?

The gas pain can be rough. Walking is the only thing that really helped me! I was not in the hospital for very long, but I did not stay in the bed, I sat in a chair and kept getting up to walk as often as I could manage. Even at home I have tried to not nap or lay down during the day so I could get better sleep at night.

So last night was pretty miserable. 3rd day post op but first night home. Could not sleep in my bed. So painful. I'm usually a stomach sleeper but kept trying to alternate between back and side. Didnt get any discharge info on sleep. Might have to try sleeping in a recliner.

My snoring was so bad my wife left and slept on the couch. Any tips to sleep better?

Some people have used a wedge pillow and say that helps. After a week or so you don't have the pain in the incisions at all.

Ugh day 3 post op. The first 2 days were great but now my incisions are hurting bad and alot of pain in my chest. Alsowoke up at 3am with a bloody nose

My 3rd day post-op was my worst! It does get better. I wonder if the bloody nose was a coincidence? That does not seem like it would be related to the surgery.

  10. Well guys, I had my surgery. Turns out I had a very huge hernia that I didn't know about! I was in surgery for 4 hours. I am doing great though except for the gas pain. I have walked, and I have drank a total of 20 ounces that also included 1 packer of injury clear Protein Drink. I have 6 little holes. Throat is a little sore but I am doing way better than expected. God is so good! Now can't wait to get over the air pain. My shoulders are really hurting!

Oh no! Rest hydrate and heal!

  11. I understand that I cannot count Protein Drinks toward the Fluid total, even if they are made by me with Water. Today I had some BariLife Cream of chicken Soup, which comes in a packet and you mix it with water. I added a little more than one cup of boiling water; it was really a thin broth like soup, not creamy. Can I count that toward my fluids? I would think so. I am having a huge amount of trouble getting the fluids in, and I think it may be because I am drinking at least one shake a day, and the other foods I am allowed at this point are all kind of soupy....Egg whites, cream of wheat, cottage cheese, etc.

Surgery tomorrow. Just liquids today. I had headaches and nausea every day on the pre-op diet.
I just want to wake up and be okay and not in a ton of pain.

So scared. So ready. Starting to crash at work on just fluids so I am working through lunch and going home early.

Good luck tomorrow! If it helps, I had very little pain; I had opiates in the recovery room, but then Tylenol and Motrin via IV; Went home the next day on just Tylenol; by 4th post op day not even Tylenol. A little stiff, but if you try to get up and move a bit every hour even that is nothing.

Ugh the anxiety is getting real! Day ten of liquid post op diet and so grouchy and freaking out. We are driving over to our Airbnb by the hospital tonight after work (live two hours away) and I am so, so anxious. Surgery check in at 5:00 am and scheduled for 7:00 am tomorrow! 😬

Hey! I'm tomorrow too. Check in at 8am. Sorry about the liquid pre op. I only have to do liquids today. Yay me.

Hope you both did great today! And you are now sipping, resting and occasionally walking.

12 days since surgery and still not moving my bowels any suggestions? I think I have tried everything OTC and prescription but maybe there is something I missed.

That seems pretty long...I'd talk to your physician's office. I was on my 4th post op day and they had me start taking Miralax, but they told me if I had not had a bowel movement by 1 week I might need to use an enema. Luckily the Miralax worked.

You are fine. Honestly, at this stage you shouldn't worry so much about Calories. Drink your Water, eat your Protein, and if you have a little room and can tolerate, get a few veggies in. Control your quantity and quality of your food. Eat small meals/snacks every 2 1/2 - 3 hours or so (or whatever your doctor/nutritionist advises). Take your time eating (something I still struggle with nearly 6 months out). Don't snack between meals.

Thank you! What a great weight loss you have had in 6 months. I am missing vegetables! I really think I need to go back to work so I am not sitting around thinking about this all day. :) I go back this coming Monday, and I am sure I will regret those words...
