Uomograsso reacted to New&Improved in WOW WHAT A JOURNEY - FEELING AMAZING - never thought I'd get this far 😛
What a ride this journey has been. I never thought I would ever get this far and definitely not this quickly.
I have worked so hard though; was super strict on myself from day 1; I feel that is just my nature; it's either 110% or its nothing.. go hard or go home!!!
So one morning I just decided this is the day I'm going to start my diet and change my life.
I had spent the past 15+ years of my life helping everyone else in my family and ignoring my own health issues mental and physical.. I researched the surgery options and trawled this website for months whilst waiting for my surgery to happen.
I found a great doctor and surgeon and he agreed with me that the roux en y bypass was definitely my best chance at success and a future.
I took everyone's advice on board but ultimately I knew it would be my choice and my decision to change my life. I also gave up alcohol now nearly 4 years ago..
I started journey at the highest weight of 322LBS with multiple comorbidities and medications keeping me alive.
Eventually I went into hospital on October 28th 2019 and had the bypass surgery and I knew there was no turning back; its now on me to prove to everyone including the doubters I could do it!!!
Here I am 6 months and 9 days later and this morning I weighed in at 175.5LBS and I'm not sure if my body is even done yet... I've had a few stalls along the way but none longer than 1 week so I've been very lucky; I've stuck to my diet pretty religiously since day one.. I was using Protein Shakes pretty much for the whole first 5 months with some small things like yoghurt and tuna but the past few weeks I've been adding more carbs and experimenting with real foods and not being so strict but still keeping focused on my weight of course.
For the first time in my life I feel normal and I feel happy and excited for the future and I never thought I would get this far 175.5lbs is an amazing effort which equals to 146.5lbs lost gone forever in just over 6 months!!!
I hope I can show others it is possible to change your life for the better you just have to be committed, you have to be mentally prepared, you have to be doing this for yourself and nobody else!!!
I hope I can be an inspiration to others!!!
    Love Mikey

Thank you for these responses. Truly. I’m asking myself (and others like you who have been through this) these tough questions because like most, I assume, I have doubts about maintaining. I’m not sure I have the will to eat so little... forever. I absolutely admire those who do. But I find myself wondering if they are simply more disciplined than I am. I’m going to do some more reading about how the surgery “resets” metabolism. Easy to say but what does it really mean and how does this happen? While I understand the removal of the part of the stomach that creates a hunger hormone I’m not sure how it’s all reset for the better since you immediately move forward by eating so little and it seems hunger does eventually return. Yes, I will be talking to my surgeon and dietician. As a matter of fact my husband is an excellent internal medicine doc so I have the “ medical” resources handy. I also know their insight can’t compare to those who have lived it. So thank you so much.
incidentally, on the HCG diet forum 10 years ago everyone thought it all worked so well and was a huge gift, reset etc too. Now it’s been recognized as a significant detriment to long term heath. So I’m determined to make sure long term living in the real world is possible.
    __________________________________________________
Is anyone here 10 years out and successful? Again, thank you greatly! Most long term surgery patients have no need for site. They have moved on and life is normal. I hope one is around to answer your question.
Surgery isn't for everyone. enjoy researching and do whats best for you, Long term can be done. I will be 6 years out in June, 254 lbs to 130 lbs I've been maintaining in the 130's years out.
Pre surgery: My past diets attempt's were not realistic or sustainable long term. I would regain with extra weight each time. I questioned if surgery would work, will i feel deprived/starving, would I regain, would I regret this? Surgery is nothing like my past diet attempts. (I've tried them all)
My experience I have no regrets in my decision to have surgery.
Hunger feels nothing like before surgery. Post-op It's manageable. I now have a sensation of full and I'm satisfied on the amount of food I can eat with the sleeve.
First stages: Your stomach restriction is tight after surgery, Your stomach is healing and calories are low,
Real food stage: Surgery restriction will slowly relax. You will be able to eat more food and calories. Food is still flavorful and I don't feel deprived.( I eat healthy versions of pizza, hamburgers etc ) My tasted buds have changed. I now love food that I didn't like in the past.
Maintenance phase food plan: After you reach your goal weight, You increase calories, fats and carbohydrates to stop your weight loss. I indulge within reason. When I have a slight gain, I go back to weight loss phase calories to stay in my weight range.

I don't have this particular scenario, but I see these kinds of scenarios in the type of work that I do and I can tell you with reasonable certainty that your back problems and pain are directly affected by morbid obesity. When you're obese, not only are you carrying around a heavy load and putting stress on all of your joints, but you often alter your posture to accommodate the weight. This can lead to progressive degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, radiculopathy, etc. Also, it's not uncommon for the joints adjacent to the spinal fusion to develop issues like herniation.
It sounds like you're in a bit of a chicken/egg situation. The excess weight is definitely exacerbating the back condition, but it's hard to do anything about the weight because of the back issue. Losing weight will not "unherniate" your discs, but I have seen cases where a herniation sort of retracts a bit and no longer impinges on nerves with proper physical therapy. Of course, the likelihood of that depends on the severity of the herniation.
I would strongly encourage you to have this conversation with both of the doctors. Meaning, the bariatric doctor and the orthopedic/neuro-surgeon who is treating your back. Not just the pain management guy, the SURGEON. Flatly ask them which one they would recommend you pursue first. Then, ask them to explain WHY. Once you understand, you can proceed in confidence knowing the situation, the benefits, and the consequences.
<disclaimer>I am NOT a doctor, but I routinely work with individuals who have had back injuries, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, sciatica, radiculopathy and the like.

I did, immediately after surgery. I think it is pretty common...My doc gave me one of these incentive spirometers to address it. It basically encourages you to do deep breathing. Can you ask your doc for one?
....or do some deep breathing yourself? Either way, let your doc know.

Just went to the gym this morning and did 30 minutes on the recumbent bike. Pre-surgery I was exercising 4 to 5 days a week and felt pretty good. Today I felt week like a kitten even though I did a very easy pace. Just got keep going though.

Your base metabolic rate depends on your weight along with other factors. As you lose weight your base metabolic rate is lower and you need fewer calories. This causes your weight loss to slow as well. Eventually when your base rate equals your daily intake you will stop losing weight.

Uomograsso got a reaction from Krimsonbutterflies in Does it get easier?
It does get easier. I am 6 weeks post-op and can easily get in 64 oz daily even though I have to wait prior to and after eating meals. I start drinking first thing and keep going all day long. As your stomach heals it will get easier to drink and you will be able to drink more at one time. Just hang in there and shoot for small goals like 4 to 6 ounces each hour.

Tallarin verde for lunch with grilled chicken breast. Used zoodles instead of Pasta and OMG sooo good. It was my first time trying zoodles and I love them! I think I like them better than pasta. I was surprised the sauce I made stuck so well to them and they had the same soft twirly consistency of pasta. I’m amazed lol
Is this considered a salad? 😂

Had to try this out now that I am back to "normal" foods. Mission whole wheat low carb tortilla with pizza squeeze sauce, Canadian bacon and fat free mozzarella. This was a go to on my pre-op diet, but with a big garden salad to go with it. Took me 50 minutes, but, I was surprised I could finish it. My stomach handled it with no issues other than I was full for the rest of the day. 245 cal, 28 grams Protein, 17 grams net carbs, 5 grams fat. Kind of carb heavy, but it was worth it.
