  1. Congrats!
Uomograsso reacted to FluffyChix in How many years after surgery could you eat a plate of spaghetti without feeling nauseous?
Wow. The experience is very similar.
I waited until I was in MM to test the waters with Pasta. And because I've worked to develop new food choices, I actually prefer my zoodles and Zeroodles to eating real pasta. No carb hangover. No heaviness or nausea.
I don't eat Chinese take out cuz of too much hidden sugar and RH. I make it at home and eat it at least 2x a week usually.
I don't eat rice any more, but I've had a bite of Mexican rice with charro Beans without issues.

This might belong under the Non-Scale victories thread, but it felt like it warranted a thread, because I didn't see it anywhere else, here.
Are you familiar with the Death Clock? http://www.deathclock.com/
It's morbid and obviously a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the site "calculates" your approximate "death day" based on attitude, weight, and smoking status. I did mine a few years back and it gave me a date of December 25, 2061. I did it again today and I'm happy to report I've bought myself another 8 years with surgery! New "date of death" is January 2, 2069.

Be careful collagen is not a complete Protein and shouldn't be counted in your protein totals. It only has 8 of 9 amino acids required to be a complete protein. It is still beneficial though. Here is a good article explaining the benefits and shortcomings of collagen.

Uomograsso reacted to BigViffer in So is coffee a real no-no?
Since I am at least a pot & a half a day drinker of coffee, and a 5 year vet, I have some experience.
When talking coffee, we all say coffee but we don't all mean the same thing. Coffee to me is regular coffee with cream. My uncle says coffee and it means black. My coworker says coffee and it is this whipped cream covered sundae in a huge cup with enough sugar to kill a diabetic.
The first thing to debunk is that coffee is diuretic. Caffeine is diuretic yes, but the amount of liquid present in a cup of coffee is more than enough to offset that. It will not dehydrate you.
When coffee is said to be acidic, that is actually in reference to the flavor; not the pH level. Our own saliva is more acidic than coffee and our stomach is far more acidic than that.
    https://espressocoffeeguide.com/low-acid-coffee/
The only things to truly be cognizant of is that caffeine, regardless of its source, attaches to the same receptors that Vitamin D and Calcium bond to. So if you take supplements for those, don't take them with coffee. The other thing is that coffee can stimulate the bowels. Some people have always been like this, a good strong cup can send me to the bathroom relatively quick. That was before surgery and still happens today. Some people never had that issue before and now they do. It's not uncommon.
  13. Thanks
Uomograsso reacted to Uomograsso in Caffeine?
A lot of liquids with caffeine are also acidic. You are trying to let your stomach heal so why introduce an irritant? I guess I would rather be safe than sorry.

On day two of 1 week liquid diet. It hasn't been too bad so far as it allows for something every hour or so.
    8am - Protein Shake
9:30am - sugar free Jello, 1 cup of fruit and 8 oz Water
    10:30 am Protein shake
    12pm - 16 oz water
    1pm - Protein Shake
2:30pm - 1 cup low sodium broth, 1 cup of fruit and 8 oz water
    3:30pm - Protein Shake
    5pm - 16 oz water
    6:30pm - Protein shake
8pm - 1 cup low sodium broth and 1 cup of fruit
Spreading things out over the day helps. Prior to this I was dieting using intermittent fasting, so I am used to feeling hungry and can deal with it.

Uomograsso reacted to AZhiker in What if it doesn't work?
One has to be prepared, willing, and ready, not just for weight loss, but for a total lifestyle change. The weight WILL come off. HOW much comes off does depend a bit on genetics and compliance, as first degree relatives who have had successful weight loss procedures are a strong indicator of success in the patient. However, the long term compliance is up to the patient. If someone starts slipping back into old habits (gradually, and hardly noticeable at first), they will regain. I am baffled by folks who say they regained 50 or 100 pounds and seem to think it all just popped back on over night. That doesn't happen. It happens pound by pound. If someone is weighing daily or weekly, regain cannot be a surprise.
WLS is only a tool - the hard work of lifestyle change is up to the patient. That means acquiring new taste buds for healthy foods, giving up the junk food that caused the problem in the first place, learning Portion Control, being consistent with tracking, getting on board with exercise, and rewiring the brain to see activities other than food to be gratifying and sustaining. One study showed that a determined mindset from the get-go: "I AM NEVER GOING BACK!" to be predictive of success. These individuals are willing to do whatever it takes to lose and maintain. When I see posts from newbies wondering when they can start drinking alcohol, asking about cheat foods, talking about the simple carbs they are eating, and stating they are months out from surgery and still haven't started exercising, I can't help but wonder if they will be the regainers. One must be determined to do everything possible to be successful - not continue to peek around the edges to see where they can still get away with unhealthy foods or habits.
Bottom line - you WILL lose weight with surgery. What you do with that gift is up to you.

Uomograsso reacted to lvidacovich in What if it doesn't work?
Yes, 100%. It's really as simple as CICO - calories in, calories out. Nothing more than that. Do some people have added complications that make it tougher to analyze? Yes. But I'm willing to bet that for 90%+ of the people that WLS doesn't work for there's an underlying compliance issue that can be to blame.
Comparing this to a drug or anything else is apples to oranges. Different mechanic of action.

Clean sheets are nice, but my surgeon and for previous surgeries it is recommended to minimize germs. I have to shower and wash with antibacterial soap, hibiclens, the night before and morning of and use clean towels after each shower. Hibiclens is what they use to wash their hands prior to surgery. They are trying to minimize the risk of infection from what I understand. I am doing whatever my surgeon recommends as they are the experts.

I agree with above posters. Why lie, if someone asks just say, "I had surgery," and leave it at that. If someone asks for details just stand there staring at them and say nothing. They will become uncomfortable and either change the subject or walk away. Put the onus on them for invading your privacy. If the have a decent sense of humor you could tell them that you cannot discuss it due to HIPAA privacy laws 😉

I have a bit of over hang and have some of the same issues. I have gotten some prescription powder, Nystatin topical powder, as doctor said I had yeast infection. If you can get to your doctor and have them document your skin issues. If you ever consider plastic surgery to remove excess skin insurance may cover part of it if you can show it is medically necessary. If doctor isn't an option I have used diaper rash cream and when rash healed I used Gold Bond powder.

IMHO, neither start gym now of reduce calories.
Focus on walking and physical therapy exercises while continuing to eat the proper macros (always ask your Nutritionist) for optimal weight loss :
Carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, Protein provides 4 calories per gram, and fat provides 9 calories per gram.
So to stay in your recommended caloric range you would want around 60/80/90 grams of protein (240-320 cals), around 50 grams or less of Carbs (200 cals or less) and 20 or less grams or less of fats
    e.g. : Eating 80 g of protein-320+200+180= 700
BUT please remember to check with your Team about their specific macro recommendations
The gym can happen once you feel up to it just exercise/move around in daily life as often as possible
    Good Luck❤️
