Ninabnina77 reacted to KateBruin in Gerd
I was blamed for my GERD. He even wrote I should be examined for Münchausen syndrome even though I show no symptoms and my psychiatrist said not a chance. He also said I have GERD because I’m bipolar. Huh?! I fired him and went to Cedars for my RNY I’m having on Thursday. I’m actually filing a formal complaint with UCLA. Accusing me of such a major mental illness. He didnt order a psych eval or anything. Absolutely disgusting and unethical. Now I have to submit a request to have it removed from my EMR.

Ninabnina77 reacted to Lee anne in Re-sleeve
I had mine in May 2022 the first time was in December 2022. My reconstruction was 6500. It's on the high end for MX but I was in a hospital. Dr Campo was one of the surgeons. If you will look up Mexicali Bariatrics you will see they have a few surgeons. They had two to do the surgery and a doctor that puts you to sleep. Each day I was there I had at least two visits from the doctors. They did three leak test. The surgeon explained to me they did not do the surgery tight enough but also only did the middle of the stomach. He said it was an old technique. I had mild qerd. I had a barium swallow there to confirm the best option was to have it reconstructed. If it had been done correct the first time and it was just that I ate to much and stretched it they might suggest a by pass

Ninabnina77 reacted to Lee anne in Re-sleeve
Hi Nina I had a revision or reconstruction for the same reason as dream believe. I went to Mexicali MX to a hospital. Mexicali Bariatrics did the reconstruction. It's been a slow process and I am 11 weeks. I feel very satisfied with limited food. I am exercising a lot more this time. I have more energy. I had to have a barium swallow and I had xray from the first sleeve. He told me it was not my fault for the weight regain. The did a barium swallow after revision checking for leaks and to show me the difference in the restriction. I lost 60lbs really fast the first time. I gained 25lbs over 6 years. I have lost 26lbs so far. The first time I lost a lb a day the first month. If your not happy get the second opinion.

Ninabnina77 reacted to Tomo in Gastric bypass sleeve
I had the sleeve then due to reflux I had to get a revision to a gastric bypass. I wish I knew that gastric bypass is far more effective for me in regards to weight loss, no reflux and no bowel issues. I would've gone straight to having the gastric bypass. I haven't had any problem maintaining my nutrition. Like the others, I take my MV every day and Calcium supplements if I don't get enough calcium from my diet. My sleeve was on the large side so if you do decide to go this route, ask your surgeon what size your stomach will be. Mine started off at 10 ounces. I never stretched it but it was difficult to maintain a calorie deficiency. With the bypass, everything seems so natural for me. I feel great, small amounts satisfy me and literally zero side effects as far as bowel, acid reflux... Etc. Hope this helps.

Ninabnina77 reacted to Lee anne in Re-sleeve
I am getting resleeve due to not loosing enough and gaining 30lb back. I lost 65lbs. My doctor would not do it he automatically said gastic without doing test ect. I had it in Mexico. I research it an found a hospital that does it only 3 hrs from my home. I live in AZ now. Going to Mexicali mx . I went there last week had a barium swallow before they would commit to a sleeve. I had my old xrays from right after surgery. Thank God I did. He said the technique they use left the top part really large from surgery. He told me it was not my fault. He said I needed a better tool to work with. So if your thinking re sleeve it depends on the issue. I go may 13 for surgery. Looking forward to the new me. I understand a lot more this time round.

Ninabnina77 reacted to Im4miracles in Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass
Hello!
Just a short story of how I got here! 8/2012, I underwent the Gastric Sleeve. I went from 230 lbs to 140 lbs. I had a hiatal hernia repair during this surgery in 2012 and again in 2021. Every since I had the sleeve in 2012, I have had reflux. Within the last few years, it has increased, severely. It did a little better when I had the hernia repair in 2021. However the hernia has returned and the GERD is even worse. I wake up quite often gagging on stomach acid. Sometimes waiting to go to bed three hours after my last meal/snack, will help SOMETIMES. A lot of times, I have to sleep sitting up. I am taking Protonix 40 MG twice a day for many many years. If I skip a dose, I regret it!
I, unfortunately, have gained quite a bit of my weight back. Once I started gaining, the front desk clerk at my Bariatric doc's office told me I didn't need to come back. I kind of felt like I got kicked out of the program!! So it just got worse after that.
Because of the severe GERD I am having, I bit the bullet and went back to see my bariatric doctor. I was ashamed because I lost 90 pounds after my surgery but have gained 60 of it back. He didn't seem to say much about that. However, he suggested that the best way to get the GERD under control was to revise my surgery from the Sleeve to the Bypass.
I have concerns! I am worried about the diet and will I screw up again? I am worried about mal absorption, dumping syndrome and all the other complications that can come from the Gastric Bypass. I worry about how the Vitamins will taste (silly I know, but if things taste nasty, I have a hard time eating/drinking). What if I can't stick with it like I did the Sleeve? This is a permanent surgery! I am scared but I feel like it is necessary to relieve me of this terrible GERD. I could end up with Barrett's Esophagus and worse, cancer of the esophagus.
Would really appreciate outlooks and suggestions!
Thanks in Advance,
Michelle

If the funeral hasn't yet taken place (or even if it has), a sweet gift for the grieving family is a basket of a dozen white cotton handkerchiefs, which you have starched and ironed to snowy perfection. So much nicer than tissues.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My father passed away five years ago today. Although it does get a bit easier with time, it never goes away.

I ordered a memorial plaque for my dad and placed it at the base of our flagpole. It just gives me a place that I can go to think about him without having to go to the cemetery. The cemetery always makes me sad but somehow this memorial of him allows me to just think of happy memories.

Wow I'm so sorry. My dad passed April 28th last year. 1 week after my birthday, completely unexpected not knowing his heart was at 13% capacity. His death was followed by the loss of 6 more family members within the next 9 months. I leaned on food so much I gained 130lbs. I had my sleeve surgery on my 30th birthday last week and my follow up is this week on my dad's 1st anniversary.
Praying for God's strength and comfort as we continue to navigate grief

I am so very sorry for your loss, Star Wars & Cupcakes.
I had gastric sleeve surgery on November 30th and very tragically lost my younger brother and only sibling on April 12th. The grief can be unbearable and I often feel so much anxiety that I want to crawl out of my skin. So I decided to join a running (for me, walk/run) group 5 Weeks to 5K training. I did it so that I could release some of this painful anxiety, sleep better, and be around a supportive group of people in beautiful nature (lucky me I get to run near the ocean and in redwood forests). I even got my 70 year old mom to join it with me! In addition to that I walk with both of my parents as much as I can. We are heartbroken, our lives changed forever so suddenly, and the exercise, nature, and supportive group of people has been very therapeutic.
(((HUGS))) Star Wars & Cupcakes, and thanks for starting this thread for other people to refer to in the future.

If you’re familiar to the food before and after thread then you’ll already know my father passed away April 17th. While it was unexpected in place and timing but he had been in declining health for some time so I suspected it was coming.
My hope is that this thread will help someone else in the future with positive ways of coping that don’t involve food. Things that have worked (somewhat) have been-
Taking a walk- this for me has been a moving forward
Visiting their favorite places- my dad loved to fish so for me that has been anywhere you can drop a line.
Hobby- either one of a loved one (my dad was a tinkerer so he did loads of things) or one of your own. This has helped me connect in ways that are deeper now than they were before.
Talk therapy- while I’m personally not a crier being able to talk and share stories has helped tremendously with loss.
If you have any helpful ideas, please let me (and others) know.

Ninabnina77 reacted to Quesodip251 in Gastric Bypass in Tijuana?
I used Dr. Armenta with Renew Bariatrics in Tijuana. He’s a hottie, I ain’t gonna lie. A lot of people use Dr. Green there but he’s so popular that he’s booked up 2-3 months out. Mine was a week ago so can’t comment yet on results. I had the SASI (mini gastric bypass plus sleeve removal) Cost was $5600 but is $5800 now. Make sure you ask tons of questions of the surgeon bc the coordinators don’t know what’s going on. It was all Americans in my cohort. The hospital policy is 30+ bmi but I’m not sure if they would make an exception for a revision. Worst case scenario is you could gain 10 lbs and then have it.

Ninabnina77 reacted to Quesodip251 in Gastric Bypass in Tijuana?
No but I researched it myself. It’s from the leftover stomach backing up into the pouch. My leftover stomach was removed so I have a decreased risk (as was yours with the sleeve).
If you have concerns I’d say just go with the RNY. I wouldn’t over analyze it bc at the end of the day, YOU control your weight loss and side effects more than which procedure you choose. You can bypass acid/bile reflux by not eating foods that cause it and you can control how much weight you lose by your determination to follow the rules of the surgery.
My own father had RNY bypass and gained almost all of it back. Ultimately your determination to get healthy and stick with the program will matter more than which procedure you choose. 😊

I think the most important thing we need to do is dig in deep and see what is the root cause of why we are overweight. Each one of us who is overweight has a different reason or cause. I am a binge eater and I have dealt with yoyo dieting and weight issues my entire life. I am also a breast cancer survivor. Originally I was looking to get a surgery that would be minimally invasive and best for my body and health over all. I did not want to do the bypass because of the malabsorbtive aspect of it, I thought it would not be good for my body being through cancer already. Now, almost 3 years post op, I realise that I should have chosen the bypass. I have had no peace of mind. My starting weight was 235 lbs, surgery weight was 227 lbs, lowest weight was 167 lbs. I am 5'5" tall and I was never able to get to goal weight. Last summer I regained some weight and went back up to 182 lbs, Jan 2022 my Dr. in Los Angeles put me on Contrave and topomax, I weigh 174 lbs now. I got weight loss surgery so I dont have to be on medication, I am so sad that I am dependent on medication right now. I am struggling, and constantly worried about climbing back up to 200's. I got the VSG to have peace of mind and be healthy but unfortunately that does not seem to be the case for me. My oncologist told me that obesity increases your risk of breast cancer recurrence and death by 35%-40%. I had to sit there an reevaluate my situation, and decide to to do the bypass so I can have peace of mind about my weight and not worry about getting cancer back and dying. I have heard and seen so many stories of people who are binge eaters do so much better with the bypass as it forces them to eat better and make better choices. So now I realize this was the better option for me and I should have done it from the beginning. So at this point I want to do the bypass so I do damage control, I dont want to get back to 235 lbs or above to make this decision. I hope this helps. I am looking to go back to Tijuana because I can't afford to do this surgery in the USA. I would go back to OCC as my Dr. there, Dr. Ariel Ortiz and his center OCC were fantastic but they are on the high end when it comes to price and I can't afford to go back there.

This sounds about like my thinking when I chose the Lap Band. I can now see it was a waste of time and not powerful enough to get adequate weight loss. I know now I should've chosen RNY from the beginning.
