Unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", that 20 lb loss is pretty average. Most "normal" WLS patients lose about 15-25 lbs the first month, so you're right on target. I lost 16 lbs my first month, and I started out at over 300 lbs (and I ended up losing all my excess weight).

Thank you for that post.
One thing I would add is if your weight loss has slowed down, but you're still losing, it's not a stall...

Sorry about your problem and I'm happy to hear you are on your journey! I was 72 when I had my sleeve done July 30. I'm losing and have hit my second stall, at almost 8 weeks. This time I'm not losing my mind, kind of. You know it is 1.8 pounds short of my next goal. I have set 5-pound goals since my surgery as I found 10-pound ones take too long. Keep drinking and keep your Protein up, that is hard too when you don't eat much. I also went on Amazon and ordered children's stainless flatware. The small spoon and fork keep my bites small. You did great losing so much before surgery so I know you will be successful. It is great to have another senior in our group.

I'm 72 and in holding waiting for insurance approval. I had the Lapband for about 9 years and it worked initially but failed. I'm going through with the surgery to improve my mobility and to get my knee to stop hurting all of the time. I also developed Apena, but that is the only insurance recognized secondary that they recognize. I was told it would take 15 days to hear from the insurance company. I've been in the process since March. Love to hear from older patients.

You can exercise more, change up what you're eating, or realize that about every 10 days your body will stall and get used to the new weight loss then continue. I read that it is hard on your body to lose a lot of weight, so I figure it needs a rest. Anything around 8 pounds a month is good anything more is a bonus. Just remember we didn't get here overnight and we won't lose it overnight either.

I had ten-pound goals too, but that drove me nuts especially during those weekly stalls. Now I make my goals 5 pounds. I find it makes me less nuts and disappointed. I have to realize it is still going down so I shouldn't b***h. I hit a 5-pound goal today so I'm expecting a stall soon. It seems like I get one week a month that the weight loss stops and the body adjusts. What I find strange is I can almost tell before I step on the scale if I've lost or not.

I just now hit goal weight at 8 months, 5 days post-op.
Okay so I missed goal by 5 days, but got there.
The most important part for those of us over 50 to keep in mind is that it might take longer, but we CAN get there in due time.
Now I’m striving for my stretch goal, which is another 10 pounds gone.
Honestly if it takes me 3 more months I don’t care.
I’m at goal and I’m ECSTATIC about it.

I am 2 1/2 months out and about 50 pounds down. My knees hurt less and I'm looking forward to our camping trips. I'm having trouble staying in clothes, not a problem though. I found 3 trash bags of clothes in the attic that I had "outgrown" so I'm sifting through them. When I go into a restaurant I know I can sit anywhere. I also check the menu online and know exactly what I will be ordering. I also take a small plastic container with me for all the leftovers. My sister suggested a thermal lunch bag with container so you can keep it cool. I'm making plans for trips and travels. None of this would be possible before. I'm 73 and now I have some good years ahead. It had been a year since I was upstairs, now I go up and down without any issue. I know food is not my friend and it was limiting the rest of my life. I eat what I need and I no longer need everything I see. I feel that I control the rest of my life, my body no longer restricts it.

Congrats on your success! This is not a race but a journey and you were successful. I hope I'm as successful as you.

I had sleeve surgery last year, 8/18, I’ll be 59 at the end of this month. I hit my stretch goal about 11 months in. I’m only a few months past a year but so far it’s been very easy to maintain.
I did lose slower than a lot of people but it did come off!

There is a group of those over 65 that have had the surgery. I had mine at 72 almost 73. I'm hoping the knees hurt less and that I get off the c-pap machine. No issues so far, I'm 2 months out. I'm just a bit impatient with the stalls. Mobility has improved and energy has also improved.
