  1. Just had my 6 month follow up on Monday (actual six month date will be 4/29). The surgeon says he is pleased with my current progress as I have already lost 47.7% of my excess weight. This seems low to me but the scale seems to have stalled out since I started exercising at the beginning of the year. (TO be fair i should clarify it is not a complete stall but just a drastic slow down. ) I am still on the graduated intake and in the process of expanding to 4-6oz of food per meal. I have found that some of the meats and heavier foods are harder to get in the additional amounts without feeling uncomfortable or bloated. But I am determined to keep pushing forward with the plan and see how far I can get. I am almost certain at this point and the current rate of loss that my goal (125lbs) will not be achieved by 11/1 but if it isn't I don't want it to be because I gave up or didn't try. I have discovered that getting slimmer doesn't always mean getting healthier as I seem to have developed a low blood pressure issue that is being monitored and the exercise is causing some chaffing/rash issues under my arms and on my legs that I am learning to manage. Its hard not to get frustrated with everything happening (and the scale not moving) but I just keep telling myself that this WILL be better for me in the long run and when this is all said and done I will be better off than I was before.
Ive also taken to doing comparison shots from different periods of my weight loss to remind myself that even if the scale isn't moving there are still positive changes happening. It also helps to read everyone else's experiences and updates and to know that even though i am frustrated, we are all on our own journey and we are all progressing at our own pace. I cant let myself get drug down without pulling myself back up and getting back to work. It is going to take time and effort but I can do this.

  2. So today is my 6th month anniversary day!
96.9 lbs lost since my 2-wk pre-op liquid diet. My BMI in October was 43.2, this morning, I clocked in at 25.4, I,m sooooo close to the top end of the "normal" BMI range for my height. Yay me!
    I wrote a longer-ish update here as I didn't want to double post [emoji6] :
btw, I also have a (beloved) spreadsheet that details inches and lbs lost by post-op week, post-op month, and calendar month. I was going to post it, but I'm not sure if its very interesting to anyone, lol. but I can post it/dm it if anyone is interested.

    Great!

  3. Hi everyone! I was converted from lapband to gastric sleeve on 10/1/2018. I have lost 67 lbs going from 227 to 160. My goal is 155! After lots of consideration and advice from doctors I went again and got a full Tummy Tuck and breast lift on Wednesday! I am sooooooooo thrilled, I never though I would be here in my life. Everyone keep up the great work!
    Congrats!

  4. Haven't seen then since my 6 month check up (9 month is in early August). At that time, they still want me to do revision. I am still fairly against it. I tend to get random complications from surgery, and I don't feel comfortable putting myself through another major surgery. Plus, I have figured out how to live with my current state of being. I'm not sure I'm up to figuring out new complications if I got the bypass.
    I agree with you wholeheartedly!

  5. Good morning y’all...just came to thank you all for the support and also to share my progress so far.
Almost 9 months pp and down from a size 18/20 to a size 8/10! I am in Brazil because my mother had some serious medical issues and don’t have a scale around but last time I weighed I was 90 lbs down and have 28 more to go to reach my goal.
    I am beyond happy!
    Hope you’re all doing great!image-0.00107288360595703.thumb.jpg.58ce8d77d438b7be4338c86773a57dd7.jpg
    Many congrats!

  6. I'm working with my therapist to try to see the good side of this surgery . I originally wrote a long post about how crappy I feel, but instead I'm going to focus on the good (if you're curious, you can see my most recent rant post). I've lost 88.65% of excess weight (measured from weight on date of surgery to top of healthy BMI), 42% of total weight (measured from highest weight) and 81 inches (bust, chest, waist, hips, both thighs, both calves, both arms, and neck). My nails are really strong (not surprising given how much dairy I eat) and I've been cleared to stop taking extra Calcium. Most of my blood tests are good (except cholesterol which is, weirdly, higher - but still not horribly high)
NUT at last appt (which was last week) asked if I wanted to stop losing. I was a bit surprised at the question. I guess I haven't really focused on what would be the goal weight-wise. Doc has never set a goal (just says that 50% lose 60% EWL), and I haven't really either because I know if I set a goal and don't meet it, even by half a pound, I'd feel like a total failure (a trait I am working on). Before surgery, I would have said beating the average would be good. But maybe given where I am, I aim for a healthy BMI - about 15lb more? Who knows - something I need to think about.
Surgeon has basically said I need to continue to do the blood tests he wants, but that I can do that with my GP if I want and he'll call her to tell her what to look for.
some pics for reference. Please ignore my messy bed (I should be better about making it - particularly before pics - but i never thought I'd show these to anyone). I hope all are doing well.

  8. Hello, I just want to give you all an update on how surgery went for me!

Monday August 19th I was given a 6:30 arrival time, the checked me in and weighed me. Next the took me to a short stay room where they had me change, use the restroom if I needed to, wash my hands up to my elbow and get into the bed. By this time it was probably around 7:20. Just so you know I hate needles and well they poked me twice! Ones to get my morning lab done and another to put the IV in. Next they took my Vidal’s asked me questions, had me sign my last consent form that was to confirm the surgery and put my compression cuffs on my calves to keep blood circulation going and to prevent blood clots. Then here was the waiting game, by this time it was probably 7:50am. At about 8:25/30 another nurse came in and gave me a chance to use the restroom before being rolled down to the surgery prep room/recovery room, there I met my anesthesiologists, my in surgery nurse, got prepped for surgery, signed consent form for anesthesia. And then I was just waiting for my surgeon to arrive, he was late 17 minutes which I heard was normal for him by one of the nurses waiting with about 4 of us to go in to surgery. When he arrived he asked me how I was doing and I had any last questions and then was told he will see me in the operating room. The last thing i remember was my anesthesiologists giving me something to “calm” me down in my IV as i was being rolled away going into the operating room.

Next thing I wake up in recovery, being asked about pain which was high for me but I remember also being really nauseous so they didn’t want to give me much pain medicine because they didn’t want me to to get more nauseous. While still in the recovery room all I remember is them changing me to a different and more comfortable gown from being in this itchy paper one I was given in the beginning. They took off all the stickers off me and rolled me to my room where my mother had already been waiting for me.

I probably slept most of the day Monday. By the time I was in my room it was already 11:45am/12pm. My mom stayed with all day till about 5:30 and my sister visited me for about 2 1/2 hours and left at the same time as my mom. Which I appreciate them keeping me company even when I was knocked out (but I did feel bad)

    _______

Now I was told everything went well with surgery BUT once I started to wake up more during the night I did have quite a bit emotions going through my head. Like what did I just do? I want to cry. All because all I wanted to do was drink water/my liquids in normal speed (they brought me Water at around 4pm but my tray of liquids at 6 for dinner with medicine cups) but i knew I couldn’t and that i had to take sips because i didn’t want to hurt myself. I had a hard time with that!

Tuesday came and I was brought my Breakfast and it took me a long time to drink even one thing because I had no appetite and my mother had to remind me to drink one medicine cup every 15 minutes like I was told to by my nurse. I had a little pain but was able to get it under control. My surgeon came and checked on me at 11:45 and I asked him if having pressure in my chest when I drink normal and he said yes it is but it will go away after today or a day more. He told me surgery went well and that I even look good being as awake and aware as i was the day after surgery. He saw I was keeping my liquids down and didn’t vomit once so he requested the discharge nurse to start my discharge paperwork. Meanwhile that was happening I was seen by my dietician, even though I had the papers at home she gave me another copy but gave it to my mom since she will be taking care of my groceries, she also gave me my medical card to keep in my wallet just Incase of anything which is also a card that gives me permission to pay for half a meal half price later on if I was to go to a restaurant.

I got discharged at 1:30pm and let me tell you from all the bumps and turns (the little that we did have) got me REALLY car sick that I had to close my eyes in the car and even when I got home at 2 I still had a little nausea for about an hour so I napped because I couldn’t find my little mint thing they gave me to smell when nauseous (I told my mom to put it with my stuff but I couldn’t find it unless she put it in her purse and forgot). dinner came around and I had brought home my Protein drink from the hospital I didn’t finish at lunch and I had a hard time drinking it, i just didn’t have no appetite.

    Anyways that’s how surgery went!

How are my AUGUST 19th 2019 surgery siblings doing?

It is 3:27am Wednesday morning (wide awake as I type this in bed, was woken up by my mother checking up on me at 2:40 asking me if I have to use the restroom so she can help me out of bed since my bed is high, we checked my incisions and one of my incisions started to leak a little which I was told if it did to just put gauze or a bandaids on where it’s leaking. Got back to bed but started to have pain so I had some medicine and then decided to type this out and now here I am lol.
    _____

Pictures bellow are from when I was in the hospital. The two in the dark was Monday night after dinner time (they left my tray because they wanted me to work on it throughout the night when I was awake because I kept falling asleep) and the one I’m in with my tray was taken by my mother to send to family who wanted an update on me and on how I was doing on Tuesday at breakfast.

  11. Hello Everyone. I'm a newbie but on my way to gastric sleeve surgery 8/29/19. I just turned 60 and gave this surgery to myself as a gift. I know it's one of many tools and I'll have to really put the work in. I'm thankful for this site and forums to touch base with others who know how I feel. Best wishes to all on this journey. I'm sure I will be asking many questions.
    Great success!

  12. Hi Kate...last summer I felt the same emotions as you. At 65 yrs old, I had the VSG on 8/1/18 and it was the BEST decision I ever made!! I was blessed with a very easy recovery (no n/v, no pain, steady weight loss) and have felt more and more amazing each month. I had T2DM, sleep apnea and GERD...ALL GONE NOW!! I was on 6 Rx meds...none now! At 5' 2", I was 238# at my heaviest and currently weigh 144#, having lost 94# so far. Have 14# left to lose but it's going slower now. I began exercising at 6 months postop...walk 2-5 mi nearly everyday and lift weights for 30 min. every other day. I've gone from a size 2XL to a medium-small clothes! I've had to replace my entire wardrobe but now clothes shopping is so much fun since I can wear cute clothes and look good in them. My doctor wants me to stay at 800-1,000 cal/day forever...and I eat healthy Proteins, veggies and berries.
I doubt if I'll ever date again (have been divorced for 33 yrs without meeting anyone since), but just looking good, feeling good and being healthy is enough. Hope you have a great experience and be sure to follow the doctors and nutritionists plan EXACTLY...then you'll have the best chance to lose as much weight as possible. Best wishes for this new chapter in your life!

  13. I'm 72 and in holding waiting for insurance approval. I had the Lapband for about 9 years and it worked initially but failed. I'm going through with the surgery to improve my mobility and to get my knee to stop hurting all of the time. I also developed Apena, but that is the only insurance recognized secondary that they recognize. I was told it would take 15 days to hear from the insurance company. I've been in the process since March. Love to hear from older patients.
I am a mature/newbie sleever and it took about six months to follow my road map before obtaining a recent surgery date. Patience is a virtue as it is said. I haven't a lot of weight but my knees are feeling better.

  14. Hi,I am having sleeve july 1 ,I am almost 67 with bone on bone hip and knees,,I am in the prep phase,,I would very much like to hear from folks that had sleeve over 65 and have success stories, only positives,Thanks so much ,
I am a mature sleever also 50 days out. In a weight loss stall but patience is required. Need to get more active with cardio and exercise in general. I prefer losing slowly. Good luck!

  15. I’m 67. My story is similar. I also have a bad hip- bone on bone + arthritis. I was originally scheduled for VGS on June 17. For my clearance, I had to take a stress test. I failed!! It turns out I had a blockage in one of the arteries in my heart!! Instead of the VGS on the 17th, I underwent a cardiac Catheterization on the 19th. So M waiting for the final OK from the cardiologist & my doctor so I can reschedule. I just want to get this whole thing over with!
It is good you found out about your heart by taking the stress test.

  16. Had my VSG on June 24th. Surprised how little discomfort I’m in. Haven’t taken any pain meds or anti nausea meds. Worst I have is a little tugging at the largest incision which is much like you feel the day after an ab workout. . The hardest thing I’ve had to deal with is hunger. Now the hunger I have is in no way like in the 2 week pre-surgery diet. That was torture. This is much more subtle. I received a follow up call from the nurse today who said this is perfectly normal as the swelling in my stomach goes down. The Ghrelin is reduced, not eliminated. Basically suck it up for the next 3 weeks. To make it more “challenging”, I’m also giving up smokeless tobacco. Good times.
I’m 6’1” and weighed 341lbs at my heaviest. Weighed 325 at the time of surgery, and 319 as of today.
Anyhow, I’m happy I did this and proud to be a new member of the VSG club.
    Keep up great work!

  17. I'm about 7.5 months out and reached the 100 mark this morning (down 90 from surgery date)! I have 10 pounds to my physician's goal, and 25 pounds to my personal goal of 150, which puts me at a healthy BMI for my height on all those terrible, old, outdated (but still used) charts. I hope to be at my personal goal by my birthday, November 10th. I'm still really struggling with being active enough, which is becoming more necessary as the loss has slowed significantly (averaging about 1.5 pounds per week for the last couple of months).
I have all the tools and resources to exercise, I'm just... not doing it. Time to get my @ss in gear so that I can meet my birthday goal! It's only 22 weeks away, so it's a tight goal to lose 25 pounds in that time frame.
I look very different than I did 7 months ago, and about a month and a half ago I had to change all my work directory pictures because I was getting confused looks and several outright "your picture looks nothing like you" comments. It feels great. [emoji4]
Not exercising? Not bad! Continuous success!
