I was torn between the sleeve and bypass but after learning the sleeve could potentially make my reflux/Gerd worse, I chose the bypass. My surgery was May 22nd and I feel great.

I've been on bariatric boards for about five years. Based on what I've seen, I would say most people have little to no pain. There are some who do, yes - but a majority do not.

I am 4 days out of my RNY. I was prepared for much more pain than I actually had. (Though I would say it was more than the pain of simply skinning my knees! LOL!)
I have near zero pain now, just some tenderish incision sites. Nothing that I am taking any pain meds for or anything. I think I just got lucky.
There are so many factors that come into play, and it really is unique to each person. Just know that no matter what comes, you can and will get through it. Good luck, you got this!

No more than slightly skinning your knees. Really you do not have to worry about pain. And worry does suck the joy out of Life...

I figure you meant, you started this fateful journey in October 2018 and in less than a week your Day of Days will occur, right?
First, Relax a little, many, have had this surgery, myself and Briswife included. You have come a long way in 8 months, now your preparations are going to pay off.
Approach this with a smile on your face, peace in your ❤ heart and a firm belief in what will occur. You will be in the right place, at the right time, having the right surgery, the chosen one, you have selected the right surgeon to perform it, he or she has to be the best or you would not have chosen them. First of all, I found, it is not as painful as I was led to believe. Tooth extractions and root canals are much worse. Instead of true abdominal pain my sensations were that my muscles felt very tired like someone had forced me to do repeatedly sit-ups at gunpoint. And I am old, tend to be crabby, if it was terrible I would be only too eager to tell you so! Like many 70+ year olds, I am only too happy to share my wisdom with anyone within earshot, whether they asked for it or not!
When you leave that operating room, you will never be the same, but that's not a BAD thing, you will have been remodeled , renovated and realigned internally. Now your G.I. system will work for you instead of the treacherous way it allowed you to gain weight before.
And it may take a while for you to learn the new mechanism involved. Briswife and I had some rarities happen in our recovery, but as for ME and I am much farther from surgery than she, I would never go back to where I was before last September. I am now smaller by over 100 pounds, maybe about the size I was when my later hubby and I were married , in December 1967, a good difference , now I appreciate it for I truly know what I went through to get back down here. I started at a 28-30W, just ready to topple from a 20 into an 18, yeah I know many ladies start at the size I am now, well Baby I Ain't Done Yet! Ready to enter Onederland after starting in the mid-to'upper 300s, I NEVER thought I would have a chance to write "1" in front of my weight. 1/4 Surgical skill, I had the chief of Bariatric Surgery and Metabolic Weight Loss at the Ohio State University, super skilled-super nice guy, at least 1/2 the Grace of God, I will always give Him credit where credit is due, and the remaining 1/4? Red-headed stubborness, a commited personality, I knew this was my One and Best chance to live instead of dying, and at 72, now 73 ,your Primary Care Physician does make such noises. Everything down to an infected hangnail, " THIS could KILL you!" And I was and am commited to see this through to the end. I've survived a lot but I'll keep coming back for more, my scars are battle ribbons in the War of Life, they say"I took what YOU threw at me- and I AM STILL HERE!"
Well I am sorry to have kept going on and on, but I am a Grandmother, should be a Grwzt-grannie but my 2 Grandville haven't Got their acts together, older one is divorced, younger one a Senior at OSU, double major- Forensics and Psychology- Meemaw is a TAD proud of Amy!
Remember you can and will be a success at this, hardest yet most satisfying job you may HAVE. And the benefits will be ALL for YOU!❤ Love from me, Frustr8, your friend in Central Ohio!👈😝👉

Like others have said, it does depend on your health issues. I was in the same predicament when I started this process, being told that either surgery would be good for me. I started the process wanting the sleeve because the bypass seemed too intrusive what with your anatomy being changed. However, I’m a week post op with gastric bypass and I wouldn’t change anything. I chose bypass over sleeve due to more weight on average being lost, and more success with it. I see a lot of people with sleeve getting a revision to bypass. Either surgery can be extremely successful, but my research led me to bypass.

I am just going to reply to this topic with an update in case anyone searching comes across this post.

I did discuss it with my Bariatric Surgeon and they did not see a problem with it (which honestly still surprises me) but when I saw my Oncologist he just assumed we were putting it off a year and I was FINE with that. So I am seeing my Oncologist again next month and will be scheduling my uptake for most likely late August or Early September (more than a year post op) because I will have to do the Low Iodine Diet for a few weeks before my uptake. The Low Iodine diet is a whole different can of worms. So anyone who is seeing them in the future that is going through what I am, please feel free to reach out to me here and I can discuss my experiences with Radiation Uptakes and Low Iodine Diets after RNY with you.

I think with the gastric sleeve you have to take Vitamins as well...just maybe not as much as those of us who have gastric bypass. For me, I take meds for other things every days well, so adding vitamins wasn't that much of an issue. Heck lots of people take vitamins everyday that dont otherwise need them.

I take cheap vitamins! haha I use Flinstones Complete because if you co pare Centrum complete has the same components and nutritions says its great. I also use Caltrate bone and health D3 600 Calcium. Walmart brand B complex and I do add Magnesium glycinate 400 chewable just to keep me regular because I dont like to take milk of mag and believe I stay away from food that may result in dumping syndrome now way in haities do I want to expeience that! (splenda does not give me dumping) Ive lost 78pounds since January 29th and 47 pounds since day of surgery 4/10/19 (8weeks). if I slack on vitamins I stall its wierd so I dont miss anymore! I had 1 complication it was a kidney stone but I heard its rare painful but rare amd mostly guys develop them. my doc says prob because I already had kidney issues to begin with so he doesnt really consider it complication. I consider my surgery complication free! I love it. Im only 36 and best decision ever! I used to rely on food. i find myself chewing up a piece of meat and spitting it out now thinking what the heck I dont want this right now. its totally cool but wierd!

    Laura,
I am waiting for approval from my insurance companies for the RNY revision surgery from the sleeve surgery 2 1/2 years ago.
I never thought once I was told that all my medical problems would be solved with the sleeve surgery to consult any of my regular Drs.I thought that these surgeon's do this everyday so they know what is the best way to go.
So I just went with the surgeon's suggestion that the sleeve was best for me.
I had severe reflux disease, type 2 diabetes, HBP,High cholesterol, asthma and arthritis.
My diabetes is gone, HBP,High cholesterol are gone. Reflux was gone for 6wks and now is worse than ever since the surgery.
    I lost 87 lbs and went from size 22w to 24 w to a 12 ladies.
My suggestion is if you have medical issues consult each of the Drs.then weigh your options.
    Good luck
