  1. Which vitamin are you taking? I'm taking the chewable celebrate vitamins and I eat it along with my breakfast everyday after breaking it up into 3-4 chunks. If I ate it all it once it was terrible to actually eat breakfast.
  2. I was stuck weight wise last week and went for almost a 4 mile walk, helped break it and now I’m stuck again. I’m trying to find a way to work in a minimum of 30 minutes but my work schedule is wonky right now so it’s hard.
  3. I'm dehydrated, I can tell by my skin. I've been really trying to chug some fluids but I feel like I just cannot get in all the recommended fluids each day. I saw my surgeon last week and he said just to try and get in as much as possible, he wants 60-80oz a day and some days I'm lucky to get 50 so I'm close, just feel like I need more. This whole not eating and drinking 30 minutes before and after and meals to take at least 30 mins to eat I feel like it's impossible to reach that amount of water unless I'm up 24 hours a day. Also was upped to 60 grams of protein a day and that's two of the premier shakes. Where the heck am I supposed to fit water in?!

    Snickers

This is where I'm at right now. I stick to my 3 meals and snacks and just drink protein and water in between.
  5. I get random hiccups that come out of nowhere too. Usually it's only 3 or 4 in a row but they're still obnoxious. I had my surgery on the 28th and they're starting to go down in frequency so I'm happy about that.
  6. I saw my surgeon again last week and he moved me to pureed foods! I noticed I can drink water pretty well but still don't get enough per day, protein shakes are SO hard for me to get down. I bought a YETI specifically for protein because it keeps it cold all day so I can sip on it. Aside from not being able to eat like before I don't even feel like I've had surgery. I'm really, really wanting to chew food right now, desperately, I'm allowed to have soft scrambled eggs so I typically try to chew those. I bought the Gerber puffs baby snacks because they essentially dissolve but can also be chewed for some crunch, hoping crunching a couple helps some! I went for a walk today and did 3.67 miles in 78 minutes and stopped once to dump some gravel out of my shoes. I was pretty active before surgery so it has definitely helped in recovering so quickly.
  7. I did my psych eval pretty early on in the process but I think they're only valid for 6 months. Mine was simple, we chatted for a bit then I had to take three tests and based on our chat and the results of the tests I got the green light. He said I was a perfectionist with a slight touch of OCD which are actually good traits for someone having weight loss surgery.
  8. I had to have a cardiac clearance as well but it just consisted of an EKG. Since that was all normal along with my chest x-ray and my pre-op lab work I didn't have to do anything beyond that.
  9. I had RNY and was given protonix the first day and that fricken hurt so they made all my liquid except the Tylenol. They wanted me to try Norco for long term pain but I know how big those are and said no way because the protonix hurt. They sent me home with hycet (liquid Norco) for pain but I think now I'd be ok to take whole pills.

    First appt.

Are you seeing your primary or a surgeon? When I saw my primary she told me about some patients she's had over the years and how well they're doing and how it really benefitted them. We discussed some pertinent health issues that could be resolved and/or prevented with the surgery. With her it was pretty cut and dry. With my surgeon we discussed all the options, he took into consideration what procedure I wanted and laid the ground work. We discussed my health history, weight history, what worked, what didn't, and then discussed the different options available. My surgeon definitely prefers the bypass and the sleeve over the lap band. Most will have you do an EGD to look at the inside of your stomach and see how things look, mine took a couple biopsies and revealed some nasty damage from GERD which I was totally unaware of. I also had to do a psych eval as that was required by the surgeon and the insurance and then some appointments with my primary and finally surgery! I really like my surgeon, he's awesome, he explains everything, doesn't talk over you, and listens to your concerns.
  11. I started this process back in March. My insurance required 3 months of a supervised diet with my primary and she was a total pain in my ass, she rescheduled two of my appointments then took forever to get paperwork to my surgeons office despite me asking her to send it to my surgeon at the conclusion of my final appointment. Then the surgeons office had someone, who is "no longer there", that misplaced more of my paperwork so they had to request that stuff again too. Everywhere I looked the typical turn around time for approval with my insurance is about 3 working days, it's been a week and they're still reviewing it. They say it could take 15-30 days but I can feel free to call every day while waiting but the approval (or denial) letter would come via snail mail. I'm just starting to feel so discouraged. with this whole process.

    Losing Hope

Slowly...Mostly sitting tasks. I tend to bounce back really quickly. After my knee surgery I was off crutches in less than 24 hours and driving in 3, and I had surgery on my right knee.

    Losing Hope

I'm doing very well! Back to work and regular life. Honestly, this surgery was way easier than my gallbladder. I almost feel guilty.

    August 2019 Check In

I had the bypass on the 28th and fluids are such a challenge! I'm going to have to start drinking protein water because I just cannot get the 30 grams I'm required to get right now because the protein shakes are like lead in my stomach. I've been eating strained cream of chicken soup and that sits like lead too. Popsicles are great because they go down very easily.
  15. Awww! You’re so sweet for checking in! Yesterday was better, I really pushed myself to get as much in as possible and I think I did better. I definitely hit that spot where I feel good to take another small sip then boom, the next tiny sip is a big mistake.
  16. Mine was a little different. I got to the hospital at the time they requested and didn't get called back until about 20 mins later, but from there I went to pre-op, got weighed, took a long trek back to my room, then she went over my allergies, medical problems, and what to expect then sent me to the bathroom for a pregnancy test. After that she had me change into a gown and wipe down my abdomen and sides with these cleaning cloths, then she started my IV and I took a bunch of meds (acid reducer, gabapentin, and something else). Then my surgeon came by and we chatted, then the anesthesiologist stopped by and soon enough I was off to the OR. I didn't get any meds like versed or fentanyl prior to going back to the OR so I remember getting in the room and seeing how crowded everything looked because mine was done with a robot. I used to work in the OR so I'm used to seeing all of that stuff but seeing it for me was stress inducing (plus our robot rooms were much larger)! I got transferred to the OR table then had a mask on my face and it was lights out within seconds. I don't remember much until the next day really.

    2 week liquid diet

I can't speak to the liquid diet pre-op because I didn't have to do that, but I can tell you what I packed. I put a few pairs of underwear, socks, some loose shorts and shirts as well as a comfy sports bra. I didn't wear any of it. I also brought shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other small toiletries because hospital stuff sucks but again, all I used was the toothbrush and toothpaste. I brought a book too but didn't read it. If I wasn't sleeping I was walking on the unit, during the other times I played on my phone. I didn't even watch TV while I was there.

    Birth control

I had a mirena IUD that lasted all of 8 months. I had horrific one sided pelvic pain and it ended up twisting so it had to come out. Also, it wasn't until I had surgery to determine the cause of very light but painful periods did I find out I have a bicornuate (heart shaped) uterus, which makes an IUD a no-go. Despite having multiple ultrasounds and even a couple kids I never knew!
  19. I could've written exactly what you did. I was also set on the sleeve because I was scared of the malnutrition risks with the bypass, but like you, due to GERD I didn't know I had, the bypass was the best option. He also said that later on down the road I'd probably need the sleeve converted to a bypass and since another surgery was not what I wanted I went along with the bypass. In the end I know it's the right decision but since I'm only four days post op right now I'm not yet convinced LOL!
  20. Ice is not friendly to me, I can do sugar free popsicles but not ice chips, I'm sipping constantly on water too because I'm terrified of getting dehydrated.
  21. I can't even do that! I can't even drink one, I get about 2 ounces of it then I'm stuffed. I'm having a really hard time with the desire to drink anything.

    Preop appointment????

Mine was pretty straight forward, we went over my EGD results and changed the plan for surgery. I originally wanted the sleeve because the whole re-routing of intestine thing but due to having some damage from acid reflux he said the bypass was better in my case. I had to sign a consent from him in his office that outlined all the risks and possible side effects. We also went through everything I'd need at home after the surgery and when I'd follow up with both him and the nutritionist. I also had to do a bunch of pre-op testing, I had to get a chest x-ray, an EKG, and a bunch of blood drawn. There were other things on the sheet I didn't have to do because they didn't pertain to me, such as a gallbladder ultrasound.
  23. I just had gastric bypass on the 28th and was discharged today. I feel nothing hunger wise and do not even feel the desire to eat or drink. My surgeon blessed me to do full liquids this morning when he saw me so I started with the protein shakes and barely got an ounce in since I've been home. Tomorrow I'll definitely try harder to get everything in but they're ok if I don't, in fact, the dietician said I probably wouldn't get it all in for the first month.

    FEP Blue Approval Time

Hey all! I got an answer after a week, my surgeons office called me to let me know then a couple days later I got the letter and I think I got a phone call from the pre-op nurse after my surgeons office called. I had gastric bypass on Aug 28 and just got discharged today.

    Bypass or Sleeve

I just had surgery Wednesday and my doctor did not want to do the sleeve at all on me because I have acid reflux. Mine is silent, meaning I have zero symptoms, but it had already caused damage in my esophagus. He said the bypass was much better for those with reflux because the sleeve can make it worse.
