I want to see those October Sleevers!

Surgery Oct 1, returning to work on Oct 21st. I was originally going to go on the 17th, but I had that brief post op complication. I had the bypass though. I heard the sleeve recovery is much faster! @Nice1

    October Surgery Roll Call

sure.....3 days ago exactly two weeks out (surgury Oct 1) I started having stomach cramps.....so bad and unusual. I do have to say that my daily bms were also like supersoft as well....my cramps were so bad I asked hubby to take me to the ER. I thought I was dying (this was Monday night of this week) they did all kinds of test and found a bowel obstruction where the intestine was sewed to the new "pouch" I was not allowed to eat or drink for 3 days while they figured this out. I was transferred by ambulance to my surgeons hosptial...he saw me briefly than released me to liquids only. No one is able to say exactly what happened but they did all kinds of xrays and images of my drinking while being exrayed, etc....they say everything is working normal....but being in the hospital was not fun. Home yesterday and back on liquids per doctors orders. I also followed purees to a "T" I think you will be fine @Linda72 as you had the sleeve. And I started puree on week 2 and you are on week 3. Maybe my insides hadn't healed? I've read that 3% of bypass patients get bowel obstructions and sooo lucky me...... I don't think that happens with sleevers. The bypass "side effects" are a bit more complex due to your guts being re-routed. Right now I wish I had gotten the sleeve like I originally asked for.....I did let myself get talked into the bypass but I 100% own that decision. just feeling down but I do hope that in a few months this will all be behind me.

    October Surgery Roll Call

I do have to say to anyone reading this.... if you are getting the bypass it's certainly not the easy way out. I felt prepared but it's been pretty rough. journey is all trial and error and every BODY is different. even if you follow all post op stuff to a "T" it's still rough. This board has been great for learning but we are all unique and heal different ways......my main advice would be not to be in a rush to get to the next food stage. I'm approaching week 3 and really happy to have gone back on liquids. All of my hell started when I added puree. interesting my program starts puree at day 8 and I see others at 2 weeks. I think that is sensible.

To go to ER or wait?!?!?

@mom2amrt this was me 3 days ago. I ended up gong to the Er. morphine made me feel better but they did a CT scan that showed a partial bowel obstruction. not sure if that is what caused my severe cramping....they did all sorts of xrays and tests and said I was fine. but they had me on zero food and water for 3 days. Now I'm back home on liquids sort of wishing i had the sleeve. This re-routing of intestines is no joke. no one every told me why i was cramping

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

This is a tough one. I'm a little over 2 weeks post op for the bypass. I was dead set on the sleeve for this whole journey and know people who had good results, I never had gerd, and didn't like the concept of rerouting of my guts. The surgeon kept suggesting bypass because I was 300 lbs and the bypass is for the really large people like myself. Then my upper GI said I had GERD. well...I never had gerd before and before...sooo...my surgeon again said bypass would be better for me as we all know sleeve patients get gerd...even thouse who never had it and gerd is apparatnly terrible. ..soo.. Even my psycologist said you have a talented surgeon, the sleeve i s easy and you are lucky to have a surgeon skilled in bypass. So...I made the decision to get the bypass on oct 1..It's been hard and I was okay until 3 days ago I had such terrible cramps I went to the ER. I thought I was dying. ER did a cat scan and said I have a partial bowel obstruction at the area where they sewed my intestines back together. but i met with surgeon and he said this is normal that a CT scan of anyone at 2 weeks out would show this. I then spent 3 miserable days in the hospital. morphine took care of the pain. I'm back home as of yesterday and feeling okay..but on liquids only..... right now I'm still wondering if I chose the right surgery. There was no doubt that I needed to lose the weight but some of the risks with the bypass are real. The sleeve seems simpler and I'm sure it has certain risks as well. Take my little story with a grain of salt. Whatever surgery you get, please believe in. I may be 100% Team bypass in a few months but right now I'm just wondering what I did to myself.

    October Surgery Roll Call

You are doing great @Nonnaof4 getting your protein in! I'm a slow loser myself.....I had a little set back and ended up in the hospital for a few days. ER said I have a partial obstructed bowl but surgeon says that's normal for a bypass patient. They did a bunch of xrays (arghhh) and said my GI tract was okay...just inflamed where they made the intestine/pouch connection. Normal for 2 weeks Post op... Guess I had some bad constipation ?? Drink your water and take your colace daily folks! Otherwise I'm good now just tired a lot, not from lack of sleep lack of energy.
  9. October 17th update. Just an update I ended up in the ER then admitted to the hospital on Monday (the 14th) night 3 days ago. Had the worst pain ever I work my husband up. No vomiting or nausea just abdominal cramping. ER did tests and discovered I have a partial bowel blockage. They decided to transfer me to the hospital where my bypass was done 2 weeks ago. That took a while as the beds weren't available. I started to feel better and basically it was 3 days no food and water I was on IVs At the other hospital my surgeon had them do upper GI xrays and watch me drink things to see if there was a blockage. Liquids seemed to pass. I am home today and just doing liquids. One of the hospital doctors said these things can workthemselves out and that the intestines were "angry" This was scary but I hope in 6 months I will look back on this as just a blip. feeling okay now but having some regrets....
  10. I totally get it @lingre but Don't be disappointed, I know it's hard but you are doing great. I had surgery on the same day as you and started above 300 lbs. I am only down 9 lbs since surgery. I was hoping to lose a lb a day. Would love to consistently lose 15 lbs a month. I'm also older and have pcos. But I hear you...we went through so much for the surgery and are ready to see results!!! 🙂 Take Care, Panda
  11. Glad this thread is still alive. I'm losing slower than others who had surgery on my same date. I'm sure it's due to PCOS and my many + years of yo you dieting.

    October Surgery Roll Call

So excited for my October surgery siblings that have had their surgery and still to come. Oct 1 here. I'm only down 9 lbs since surgery but I'm older and a slow loser but I'll take it! On stage 2 purees and sooo happy. Lots of options to eat now
  13. Oct 12 update. Doing okay had some random sharp pains in the right hand side so started taking Tylenol again and it has improved. Had an issue with the incisions so went to back to surgeon and spoke to his pa. Turns out i was allergic to the glue..they removed all the glue and put steri strips on the open wounds. Still sooo itchy...trying not to scratch. I feel I can eat too much. I’m on the puréed stage and I ate 3 oz of beans and I know we shouldn’t eat more than 1.5 at a time. My weight loss has been slow. Most people Lose 10 lbs a week per my anecdotal research on this board. On oct 1 I weight 284 and today I weighed 277. Of course on Oct 2 I weight 294, lol. I will weight on Oct 15 which will be exactly 2 weeks. I’m happy with the loss, but really want one of these 10 lb weeks. Still really happy as I’m down 30 lbs from my high of 307 🙂 So far getting protein in no problem. Getting 64 oz of liquid a bit harder need to step it up......
  14. such good advice..pre-op I was drinking the coconut flavored protein water. Can't stomach that anymore.
  15. Hi @Dee2938 I know that's frustrating, especially because folks here seem to lose 10 lbs a week.... I would say you may be eating too many calories or perhaps carbs. i have always been calorie sensitive. Even at 300 plus pounds I ate 800 calories and less than 20 carbs to maintain that weight. I'm a week post op now but I typically don't go over 350 calories a day and stay under 20 carbs. Maybe try that and see if it works for you? Even with that diet I've only lost 6 lbs.... October 1 I weighed 284, October 9 I weigh 278. Not a big loss..... I'm a slow loser too......
  16. So...I was discharged and now home with lots of instructions. They told me not to weight but II just had to see...I’ve gained exactly 10 lbs in one day, what??! I was on a nonstop IV drip but stilll....omg! Anyone else experience this?

    Rny revision

  18. I think that's fantastic and counterintutitive. Let me ask, did you increase your calories and your protein or just your calories?

    October sleevers?????

Yes, that is quite a judgmental statement to be throwing around. "Most people end up converting"
  20. incisions are itching and one looks hella bad. I emailed the nurse she said i could peel the glue off and then put hydrocortisone. that wasn't what I asked I feel that my incision popped underneath the glue. going to keep it on and not scratch and see what happens. I did order scar cream as I feel these are going to scar.
  21. Typing to you guys from the hospital. Had my surgery about 12 hours ago. I haven’t looked at my incisions but I’m told there are 6 and look good. I’m drinking water And broth about t 4-6 oz/ hour. That does not make me full wondering if this is normal? I also barely feel pain. I didn’t have any gas issues at all.... all is good and II plan to go home tomorrow. Appreciate everyone who read and responded and those who IM-ed me. I guess I’lll go over to the post op thread, lol.
  22. I would just say you have to be proactive, call your doctors business office, call your insurance company. I even called my employers hr department. I work for a large company and they outsource people to advocate for insurance for situations such as this. I put out out an APB like I have to get this done! lol I do understand it's an insurance game to deny at first. I've posted my story but I went through the whole 3 month pre-program even got Pre-approved. They went to submit me and then..boom..I was denied. I unleashed holy hell and it worked.

    October Surgery Roll Call

    How are you doing??
  24. I am 8 days out of pre-op and below is my experience Things I bought pre-op or immediately after that I use frequently Wedge pillow for when you get home. I ordered the day I got home because I couldn't sleep flat anymore sugar free popsicles benefiber biotene mouth spray, used that in the hospital and for a few days out, saved me. carmex lip balm 5 oz anchor measuring cup water bottle with measurements on it. Torini sugar free syrups...for decaf coffee ice cube tray - for freezing broth popsicle trays - for making your own as store bought have more carbs and calories than you realize store bought bone broths for in a pinch. Not chicken stock, Bone Broth Blender - I had this but I use this 2 x a day for the protein shakes Make sure you have extra protein like genepro to blend in to help you meet your protein goals Silly, but a basket, notepad, designated for all of your post up meds plenty of loose flowey dresses beach coverups - lucky i had a bunch but you won't want to wear a lot of clothes Loose panties subscription to myfitness pal or a good old notebook to document your liquids and proteins and everything I hate water so I need water enhancers, I used publix brand or great value brand orange soy milk - i discovered the lactose doesn't agree with me so I had to buy soy milk get your mani/pedi before because you will be wearing flip flops and not feel like bending over for sneakers Things I bought that I didn't use. I bought a kitchen scale then realized my program does not want me to use a food scale, only measuring cups 100 1.5 oz medicine cups - never used them..I thought I would track my fluid intake this way...ummm..no.. almond creamer, just don't like it Miralax..didn't need it, the colace and benefiber helps me "go"
