  1. How much should we be eating? So I got some specific answers from Dr at 6 week checkup. He said that right now, it is VERY NORMAL to only be consuming between 500 and 600 calories per day (which is what I average). At a year out, it's probably going to go up to 600 to 800. Another year out, it may be 800 to 1000 maybe 1200, but that is not usual.

That being said, he has never had the surgery, so I'm guessing your mileage may vary (from my lapband experience the dr did not have a clear understanding of what you could consume - depending on the type of food). The numbers provided by your own doctors may also vary widely.

I think it is important to listen to your body (not your mind) on when to eat. And follow the eating pattern of Protein first, followed by complex carbs and avoid simple carbs.

So back in Jan with my WI with the dr I was 297. I’m at 258 right now. Lowest was 257. I dropped 15 lbs before my surgery on March 11th, and now another 24/25. (Depending on what day). How is everyone else doing?

When I started about 6 months ago, I was 277 (highest 285). Morning of surgery (also 3/11) I was 248.8. Today I'm 229, almost 20 down. Feeling good. Wish it were going a little faster. But slow and steady.

Anyone here have issues with ability to exercise? My right knee is bone on bone (and trust me I’m not ready for another surgery anytime soon!) and walking is difficult and painful. I had hoped dropping the almost 30 pounds would help and it did marginally but I’m kind of sad and discouraged by this. I want to go and do so much. ☹️

I have arthritis in my knees so I also have some problem getting around (not nearly as bad as you!). My physical trainer suggested doing exercises in a pool in you have access to one.

I'm curious how many calories you're eating and what your Protein intake is. My Protein is supposed to be between 74 and 90 and she hasn't really given me a calorie goal. Instead they are just concentrating on protein, Water and eating nutritious foods. My stall just broke as well. Lost about 3 pounds in two weeks. I needed to add in complex carbs to break the cycle!

So, my protein goal is 75 grams day, which I just started hitting regularly in the last week or so. The absolute max calories I've gotten is about 700, but I average around 600 give or take 50. (I track in myfitnesspal.com.) I just finished a week of soft foods (soft cooked eggs, fat free refried Beans, can tuna or chicken, soft cooked, mashed vegetables.) This week I can start ground meats, soft cooked beans/lentils and vegetables. I've also kicked up my workouts by adding more resistance/lifting along with cardo.

Hownlong was your stall and hownlong after surgery did it start. I am sooo...discouraged right now due to my stall. I stalled in the 2 week after surgery and now I'm at 3.5 weeks and no movement on the scale at all.

I lost surgery weight in about 10-12 days. Then I only lost about 3 lbs the next 2 weeks. Then things kicked in and I'm going down every day! I was getting so worried that I had done this surgery for nothing, but I just needed to be patient. Now I'm on a roll, and I'm sure you will be soon too!

I am 26 days out from surgery. Still on soft foods. My weight loss has really slowed down though. I only lost 2 pounds this past week. I’m on program 100% so I’m annoyed by this. Anyone else notice a slowdown between weeks 3 and 4?

Claricey, I've only lost 4 lbs from my pre-surgery weight, and our surgery was the same day. I was reading a time article on weight loss and what works and doesn't and came across this: "when you lose weight, your resting metabolism (how much energy your body uses when at rest) slows down--possibly an evolutionary holdover from the days when food scarcity was common."

I think that until our metabolisms pickup (which they can't now because we are eating so little), things are going to move slowly.

I'm a week post surgery, and of course am only taking in fluids, so I'm not sure how soon I should expect to have a BM. I don't feel constipated, but wonder... also, if taking in only Protein Shakes, should I expect diarrhea? Thanks for your advice on this subject!!

My first was 8 days post surgery, 10 days since my last one. I was getting nervous!

  8. I think our bodies are in "starvation" mode. Taking in so few calories that are bodies are holding on to what we have. That is definitely true for me. As much as I feel like I'm eating (drinking really) all day, I'm only averaging 500 to 600 calories per day. The week after surgery (3/11) it was even less than that. The month before surgery I was only eating 1000 calories per day. I think once we get closer to taking in more regular foods the body will shift into lose mode.

I've lost an incredibly 32 pounds since surgery 3 weeks ago, which absolutely blows my mind! However, I'm trying not to weigh myself very often, because I know it will ebb and flow and I just want to focus on eating right.

Wow, you are doing great! I've only lost a couple of pounds since surgery 2 weeks ago today. Care to share your eating and exercise routine?

  10. So I'm just barely 2 weeks post op, so hopefully this is a temporary thing. As the day progresses, I feel like my system is continually filling without draining fast enough. Having just barely 2 oz of pureed food or 8 oz of Fluid in one hour makes me feel pretty full and as the day progresses I can intake less and less fluid. When I spoke with the Dr about this he said that it may be normal part of the healing process or SOMETIMES the new connection from stomach to intestines may not be large enough. They will take an x-ray at 6 weeks if I'm still having the issue and it may require surgery. I've never heard of this and wondering if anyone has had this done?

  11. Had my first post-op checkup today. I'm down 1 lb. from my morning of surgery weight! I didn't weigh myself in between because I knew I would have post surgery gain - and I didn't want to see how much!

Dr wants my bowels to get moving so I have to take some Milk of Magnesia every night.

I can move onto pureed foods!! I can hardly wait to have some cottage cheese!

I go back again in 4 weeks.

    WooWoot!.

  12. I've been good until last evening. I think I had too much fluid/protein within a couple of hours. My stomach felt uncomfortable then it started cramping. A couple hours later I threw up 4 or 5 times. It was just frothy liquid but it hurt like the devil. For a few hours I was feeling like I was going to die. Sounds like dumping but I didn't have anything I shouldn't. Just Water and Protein Shakes. I feel much better today, but I'm being very cautious about the amount of liquids I'm taking in per hour. And I have not yet taken in the amount of liquids or Protein I should be. I just feel too full.

On another note I haven't had a bowel movement in over a week (before surgery). I'm calling the Dr. office tomorrow to discuss both these issues.

  13. I take Kaizen Protein Powder and it has 35 grams of Protein per scoop. I added it this morning to my Decaf coffee to make it like a cafe mocha. I don’t like how sweet it is but mixing it in with coffee or adding it to pudding helps with the flavour.

I’d like to find a flavour free Protein power that is high as well since I’m new to the whole post op thing.
    Unjury has an unflavored powder.

I’m Having my lap and revision to a sleeve on Monday, March 11 also

How is it going for you? I'm feeling really good and my surgery was the same day. I came home Tuesday afternoon. I'm doing pretty good at getting in my fluids.

Are you having issues or problems? Hopefully not!

    Claricey,
Haven't seen you post the last few days. Did you have surgery? How did it go?
I had mine Monday morning, and came home Tuesday afternoon. Some nausea and pain after I came to. Took something for both, which cleared them up. Had a little more pain Monday evening but that's been all since then. Just went out and sat on the porch swing in the sunshine. So far so good. Hope the same for you.

Hi! Just got home today. Had lots of scar tissue from previous surgery so it took about 4 hours. I was really zonked out on anesthesia until last night. All went well and I’m just dealing with managing the pain. As long as I get ahead of it I’m ok! I have 6 small incisions. I know in a few days it will get better. On clears till Friday when I see the nutritionist to advance my diet to puréed.

I"m so glad it is going well for you! Today I woke up feeling normal, no pain, no discomfort at all! I stay on full liquid for 2 weeks before progressing to pureed. Yesterday I was able to drink 1 full Premier Protein shake over the course of the day. We are doing great!

Hello all I’m 5 months out and still find myself struggling to get my 90grams of Protein in and my fluids. I’m not hungry and when i eat I’m so full. Any tips? I just purchased some Protein Shots hopefully it will help😩

90 grams seems very high. I'm just 2 days post op, but all I need to work up to is about 75 grams. With weight loss your Protein requirement should have gone down. Have you spoken to your nutritionist?
