    March Bypass Buddies

How much should we be eating? So I got some specific answers from Dr at 6 week checkup. He said that right now, it is VERY NORMAL to only be consuming between 500 and 600 calories per day (which is what I average). At a year out, it's probably going to go up to 600 to 800. Another year out, it may be 800 to 1000 maybe 1200, but that is not usual. That being said, he has never had the surgery, so I'm guessing your mileage may vary (from my lapband experience the dr did not have a clear understanding of what you could consume - depending on the type of food). The numbers provided by your own doctors may also vary widely. I think it is important to listen to your body (not your mind) on when to eat. And follow the eating pattern of protein first, followed by complex carbs and avoid simple carbs.

    March Bypass Buddies

When I started about 6 months ago, I was 277 (highest 285). Morning of surgery (also 3/11) I was 248.8. Today I'm 229, almost 20 down. Feeling good. Wish it were going a little faster. But slow and steady.

I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

I have arthritis in my knees so I also have some problem getting around (not nearly as bad as you!). My physical trainer suggested doing exercises in a pool in you have access to one.

Anyone get a March date yet?

So, my protein goal is 75 grams day, which I just started hitting regularly in the last week or so. The absolute max calories I've gotten is about 700, but I average around 600 give or take 50. (I track in myfitnesspal.com.) I just finished a week of soft foods (soft cooked eggs, fat free refried beans, can tuna or chicken, soft cooked, mashed vegetables.) This week I can start ground meats, soft cooked beans/lentils and vegetables. I've also kicked up my workouts by adding more resistance/lifting along with cardo.

I lost surgery weight in about 10-12 days. Then I only lost about 3 lbs the next 2 weeks. Then things kicked in and I'm going down every day! I was getting so worried that I had done this surgery for nothing, but I just needed to be patient. Now I'm on a roll, and I'm sure you will be soon too!

Claricey, I've only lost 4 lbs from my pre-surgery weight, and our surgery was the same day. I was reading a time article on weight loss and what works and doesn't and came across this: "when you lose weight, your resting metabolism (how much energy your body uses when at rest) slows down--possibly an evolutionary holdover from the days when food scarcity was common." I think that until our metabolisms pickup (which they can't now because we are eating so little), things are going to move slowly. I need to talk about constipation post op

My doctor said Milk of Magnesia every night until things got back to normal. Took only a few days for that to happen.
  11. My first was 8 days post surgery, 10 days since my last one. I was getting nervous!

    March Bypass Buddies

I think our bodies are in "starvation" mode. Taking in so few calories that are bodies are holding on to what we have. That is definitely true for me. As much as I feel like I'm eating (drinking really) all day, I'm only averaging 500 to 600 calories per day. The week after surgery (3/11) it was even less than that. The month before surgery I was only eating 1000 calories per day. I think once we get closer to taking in more regular foods the body will shift into lose mode.

Wow, you are doing great! I've only lost a couple of pounds since surgery 2 weeks ago today. Care to share your eating and exercise routine?
  14. So I'm just barely 2 weeks post op, so hopefully this is a temporary thing. As the day progresses, I feel like my system is continually filling without draining fast enough. Having just barely 2 oz of pureed food or 8 oz of fluid in one hour makes me feel pretty full and as the day progresses I can intake less and less fluid. When I spoke with the Dr about this he said that it may be normal part of the healing process or SOMETIMES the new connection from stomach to intestines may not be large enough. They will take an x-ray at 6 weeks if I'm still having the issue and it may require surgery. I've never heard of this and wondering if anyone has had this done?

I know it wasn't just me, but the Iron pill is making me nauseous. About 30 minutes after I take it, I can feel it trying to fight its way back out!

    March Bypass Buddies

Had my first post-op checkup today. I'm down 1 lb. from my morning of surgery weight! I didn't weigh myself in between because I knew I would have post surgery gain - and I didn't want to see how much! Dr wants my bowels to get moving so I have to take some Milk of Magnesia every night. I can move onto pureed foods!! I can hardly wait to have some cottage cheese! I go back again in 4 weeks. WooWoot!.

Claricey, I'm supposed to work up to 60 grams of protein and 64 ounces of fluids. I'm only getting about 30 protein and about 50 fluids.

    March Bypass Buddies

I've been good until last evening. I think I had too much fluid/protein within a couple of hours. My stomach felt uncomfortable then it started cramping. A couple hours later I threw up 4 or 5 times. It was just frothy liquid but it hurt like the devil. For a few hours I was feeling like I was going to die. Sounds like dumping but I didn't have anything I shouldn't. Just water and protein shakes. I feel much better today, but I'm being very cautious about the amount of liquids I'm taking in per hour. And I have not yet taken in the amount of liquids or protein I should be. I just feel too full. On another note I haven't had a bowel movement in over a week (before surgery). I'm calling the Dr. office tomorrow to discuss both these issues.

    Once daily multivitamin

On my list of post op vitamins, there were caveats about taking some things together (they don't play nice) or taking too much at one time (your body can't absorb). I'd definitely check with your doctor or nutritionist.

    Isopure Zero Carb Drinks

I tried the Pineapple, Orange, Banana and to me it was awful. Totally artificial in flavor and the sweetener adds a terrible taste. But I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners, so your mileage may vary!

How is it going for you? I'm feeling really good and my surgery was the same day. I came home Tuesday afternoon. I'm doing pretty good at getting in my fluids. Are you having issues or problems? Hopefully not!

Anyone get a March date yet?

Hi! Just got home today. Had lots of scar tissue from previous surgery so it took about 4 hours. I was really zonked out on anesthesia until last night. All went well and I’m just dealing with managing the pain. As long as I get ahead of it I’m ok! I have 6 small incisions. I know in a few days it will get better. On clears till Friday when I see the nutritionist to advance my diet to puréed. I"m so glad it is going well for you! Today I woke up feeling normal, no pain, no discomfort at all! I stay on full liquid for 2 weeks before progressing to pureed. Yesterday I was able to drink 1 full premier protein shake over the course of the day. We are doing great!

    Protein and fluids!

90 grams seems very high. I'm just 2 days post op, but all I need to work up to is about 75 grams. With weight loss your protein requirement should have gone down. Have you spoken to your nutritionist?

Claricey, Haven't seen you post the last few days. Did you have surgery? How did it go? I had mine Monday morning, and came home Tuesday afternoon. Some nausea and pain after I came to. Took something for both, which cleared them up. Had a little more pain Monday evening but that's been all since then. Just went out and sat on the porch swing in the sunshine. So far so good. Hope the same for you.
