About Me
Hello, my name is Emily and I have been overweight/obese for most of my life. I started gaining weight around 9 years of age and hit puberty very early (I would later learn at 15 that I have PCOS). I was usually between 30-50 lbs overweight but over the years my weight has gone up even higher and I am now well over 100 pounds overweight. Prior to getting pregnant with my son (age 4), I went to a fertility endocrinologist to assist me and my now ex-husband, to get pregnant. I learned at that point that I also had a pituitary adenoma, which made my weight loss attempts even harder and hormones/cycle completely out of whack. With treatment and a strict Paleo, low calorie diet I managed to get down to about 182 lbs (still about 50 lbs overweight for my height), but I slowly regained all of that weight and then some. With the support of my PCPs and my endocrinologist, I decided in January 2018 that I would take the steps needed to get insurance approval for VSG. The process has been very long, with over 7 months of diet classes, upper endoscopy procedures, specialist appointments, long distance travel and upcoming psychiatric evaluation. I am hopeful that this surgery will improve my health and quality of life, and also give me the tools I need to control my weight and eating habits.
