  1. Did anyone do a complete clean out of their pantry before surgery? I am thinking about completely emptying my pantry. My husband barely eats so he would not really care. I have made over a months worth of meals for my son and have them in the freezer. I am just thinking if I clear the pantry when I go to solids I can start fresh with only healthy foods. What have others done?
    Great idea!

  2. I was never tested for sleep apea because I already qualified for surgery under the co-morbidities with PCOS, cholesterol, high BP, and diabetes - so I wanted to ask some people here who were diagnosed with it.
I never wake up feeling refreshed. I never want to get out of bed in the morning. Even if I have had 8-12 hours of sleep. Even on days when I should be excited to leap out of bed - the days my c-sections were scheduled for the births of my daughters, the days when I get to go home to Ireland once a year, etc. I am beyond sluggish.
I do snore like a pig, and often wake up with a dry mouth.
Is it likely I have sleep apnea? It seems greedy to want more health benefits besides the ones I am already anticipating - but I would be very glad to not feel this way and to want to get up in the morning.
It would be impossible for lay persons (even Doctors) on here to diagnose to you on a forum. A sleep study would give you the answers you need.

  3. I started the process in December 2016 and had surgery October 2018. I work for the state of West Virginia and our insurance required a 12 month medically supervised diet and 10% of your original weight lost. Took me more like 20 months to lose it. Once that was done, the pre-auth, denial, appeal, approval, labs, psych eval, nutrition classes took about three months all together. So if you don't count my diet period, only a few months. Hope yours goes fast! Mine was so drawn out that I had surgeons change in the practice I was going to, lol!

Wow! Considering that obesity is classified as a disease it's almost appalling they would make you go through that to save your life. It's almost like they're saying "prove to us your life is worth saving"

  4. I
I'm noticing alot of folks with Cigna
My first Dr appt was Jan 17 th I haven't had surgery yet but my insurance dies NOT require supervised weigh ins so it's looking like my surgery will be late March early April. Everything will be submitted to insurance for approval on March 7th and as soon as we get approval (my insurance is pretty quick) I'll pick a surgery date and begin my pre-op diet. I have United healthcare Medicare advantage plan.

  5. Good Morning! This is my first post. I made the decision to have this surgery last year. I finally saw my doctor to send in her referral in December. Time has flown by so fast since then as well as the process. I've had my first surgeon appointment & met with him & his team. I've had my blood tests and first month visit with the Dietician. I have been approved by everyone, just waiting on the insurance to approve me. I am a Senior Lady at 66 years old with Type 2 Diabetes. I wish I had made this decision many, many years ago, but I was like a lot of people swayed by the stigma that once was attached to WLS. My surgeon has recommended VSG.
I have been reading posts on the forums for a month or so. I didn't want to post until I knew this was going to happen. They are looking at April 2019 for my surgery. I'm really excited & nervous at the same time.
Congrats! I'm 53 and rolling right along through the process! Looking at a late March early April Surgery. Well wishes!

  6. I’m one of those lucky ladies with early onset menopause. I’ve been experiencing a variety of symptoms since last October and am currently managing without any hormone replacement therapy. How have your menopause symptoms been effected since surgery? I have lost about 25 lbs preop and have definitely noticed a decrease in some of my symptoms. Most noticeably: Migraines (which I never had before menopause), severity of bleeding, general fatigue

I’m expecting that my symptoms will improve with weight loss as the inflammation in my entire body will be greatly improved. But, I think I’m looking for some encouragement, ladies! It’s been an eye opening experience to say the least; a wild ride I was not ready for!

I was thrown into instant medical menopause with the removal of my one remaining ovary (twisted and removed in an emergency surgery and my other was removed ten years earlier under the same circumstances). I have never had a single menopausal symptom and it's been over 3 years now.

  7. So I had my first consultation today with the weight loss center I was planning on going through. My insurance has already approved getting surgery, for what its worth. During the meeting, the lady asked a ton of questions, and inquired about my relationship with food. She somehow got the impression that I stress eat, even after I tried to clarify that I do not. Things at home have been a bit rocky, and my stress level has been high, so you can see where this is going. After the hour long consultation, she told me that due to stress being high, financial issues being a factor, and the fact that we moved 2 years ago and have no family or friends here (No local support group), that I was not a good fit for surgery.
I was a little floored, but took it like a champ. I had an appointment already scheduled following that one, with a physician, and she encouraged me to see him regardless because ultimately he'd be working along with the surgeons and may have a different opinion. We met for a little over 40 minutes, and he questioned me about the traumas I'd experienced as a child, and followed up asking about how often I turn to food for comfort. I don't feel I do (And neither does my husband, nor my best friend of 20+ years), and told him rarely, if ever. He said, and I quote: "Mmm.. I disagree with you there!" Uh? Okay..? I figured I'd humor him and asked why he came to that conclusion. He went on to elaborate that because I was abused as a child that I surely turned to food as a form or comfort, or affection, even if I didn't realize I was doing so. Huh. Okay. I mean, I literally brought you my food log, and am telling you otherwise, but alright. The rest of the meeting he spent explaining that I was a better candidate for medical weight loss, but not so much surgical. I'm 32 years old, 397lbs. I have pcos, am pre-diabetic, and am pursuing WLS to not only better my health as conventional methods have failed, but also to start a family in a few years with my husband.
This whole experience has left me incredibly disheartened, and I genuinely feel like every step I've made on this journey has been an uphill battle. Do you guys think I should pursue another opinion with a different clinic? I'm not exactly thrilled at the thought of taking 'weight loss pills' so medical weight loss isn't very appealing to me. I'm super conflicted and confused as to what to do going forward. Any advice would be welcomed! Thank you!
Also I wanted to point out that showing them your food diary/log DOESN'T prove your not a stress eater. It just shows WHAT you've eaten. Not WHY. Anybody can list eating as Breakfast lunch Snacks etc and therapists expect this. I reiterate that trained proffessionals are really good at takeing an objective look and seeing things we just can't. I had a really hard time admitting this one. While I've been approved to proceed with Surgery I've elected to also continue with counseling to work on the issues they see in me to see if I can recognize them in myself. I don't want sabotage myself post surgery. Counseling may be a good place for you to start just to test the waters. Maybe for a year and see if your in a different place next year.

  9. You have to have private health insurance as Medicare covers very very few procedures. I do know a few people that got a band that way but the process was long and arduous.
The insurers have changed the rules in the last couple of years , previously wls was part of most policies but because it has become so popular you now have to have the top ( most expensive) policy for it to be covered. Private health insurance policies in Aus are paid for by the individual not the employer. Even with insurance you still have to pay pretty substantial out of pocket expenses.
My out of pocket for the surgeon is $3000, anaesthetist $750, hospital excess $500 just to mention a few. That doesn’t include all the Drs and dieticians visits etc. It wouldn’t be so bad except I have paid all these fees before for my band, I feel cheated, I want a refund!
I also live in the country. The hospital I am going to is approx 40km away but that’s not an issue, I’m used to not having anything on my doorstep.
Now I had better get out of bed and get dressed, I have a dieticians app this morning
Medicare absolutely covers bariatric surgery. As does all Medicare advantage plans. Medicare advantage plans are required by law to cover all services that Medicare covers. I have a Medicare advantage plan and my gastric bypass is covered 100 percent with no deductables or copays. My medicare advantage plan is through United healthcare.

  10. I swore up and down that I was NOT a stress eater. I really believed it. I had my initial peych eval and had to come back a week later to discuss the results of the written part. Well I went home and I was pretty anxious about my follow up on the psych eval. I mean... I really Wanted to pass the psych eval so I could proceed with my surgery. One day I found myself rummaging through the fridge and the cupboards and back to the fridge and not really finding anything I wanted. Then it hit me! I'm not hungry! I'm stressed! I AM a stress eater! I finally went back for my psych eval follow up. I admitted to them what I discovered about myself. Long story short I passed my psych eval. Being a stress eater doesn't disqualify you from weight loss Sur gery. In some cases they may identify some issues they want you to work on thru counseling before clearing to proceed. They didn't require me to that but I've elected to go to counseling while moving forward with the bariatric process. I think if I were you I'd get a 2nd opinion. One thing I've learned is trained proffessionals can often look at us objectively and see things that we really just can't.

  11. I'm very new to the WLS journey - I have my first consultation with a surgeon in two weeks. Can y'all think of any questions I should plan on asking?
    Thanks!

I asked my surgeon if he did other surgeries and if so what percentage of his practice was bariatric?

Is the hospital he practices at a center of excellence?

Is he accredited as a surgeon of excellence?

Does he have a surgical team he routinely uses?

If so how long have they been working together?

Has he had any patient deaths and if so, under what circumstances?

How long has he been doing bariatric surgery and how was he trained?

I also recommend this book . It's available on Amazon.com, eBay and may be available at your local library.1548629771005.jpeg

  12. I need your help please. I have just been given my date for my pre-op assessment but I have gained weight since the seminar I attended in August when they weighed me for my final weight. Has anyone else done this and what were the repercussions? Did they take you off the programme so you have to start from the very beginning again or did you just postpone your pre-op until you had lost the weight you gained? Any help would be appreciated as just received the information today and my appointment is on Monday 28th so really scared they will throw me off the programme as this is what I was told by someone in the Weight Management Team.
    Many thanks in advance
Your best bet is to get your info straight from the horses mouth. Call your clinic and ask them directly.
