Excessively long clear liquid phase
justmetj replied to Brent701's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on clear liquids until my one week follow up which was eight days after surgery. After that appointment, and they knew I was doing well, they moved me on to full liquids. -
My husband has been really supportive so far. It's only been a month for us coming out of surgery and maybe your spouse just needs time to adjust to the "new you". It's probably quite different for them to get used to us needing to take time now to take care of ourselves more than we were pre-surgery, both physically and nutritionally. Try explaining that you're doing this for them and your family so you can be the best husband and father you can be.

Weighing in at the doctor's office
justmetj replied to IWuzaFatDuck's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I always weigh in the morning with no clothes before my Drs. Appointment and consider that my "real" weight. I don't even pay attention to what the Drs. scale says because of my clothes or anything I ate or drank before the appointment. -
Today is the most tempting day of the year

Looks like you had a smooth recovery by getting back to work so soon! Dr. Boone is amazing 😊 Congratulations and stay strong during all those office potlucks that are sure to be in your future. -
You're welcome! I know what it's like to have so many unanswered questions. It was hard for me because I didn't have anyone who had been through the process there. Good luck and if you have any more questions just ask. 😊

I did the online seminar and then called to schedule my appointment with Dr. Boone, who along with his partner Dr. Higa, came highly recommended. That initial consultation took about a month and a half wait because they are in high demand. At the consult you meet with your Dr. then you will go with your health care coordinator to schedule your weight management classes and you will be given a list of tests that you will be required to complete, but they will schedule for you. They will also give you a brochure for BariatricPsychEvaluations.com. You can call them and get your psych evaluation done right away. You will do an online questionnaire and then a quick phone interview a day or two afterward so you can scratch that off your list. My required tests were- Psych eval, labs, EGD and a manometry. I started the process Sept. 12, 2018 and they submitted my papers to insurance on March 25, 2019, then called me on March 29th to tell me insurance approved and to see if I wanted to schedule my surgery on April 4th. I chose the sleeve and it was a very easy surgery with very little pain because they are so good at what they do. The six months goes by quicker than you think it will. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask 😊

Lots of gas when I try to drink
justmetj replied to Jon_gets_skinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had it and it would happen even when I stood up. I think there's a lot of residual gas left in our system after the surgery not to mention swelling. It was like a dull ache at the top of my stomach/chest area when I would drink and it felt like I had to burp but couldn't. Heating my liquids, even the water, helped me a lot. It went away after about a week. -

Surgery is tomorrow and I think my anxiety has gone through the roof
justmetj replied to Jon_gets_skinny's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The night before my surgery I was extremely anxious which is not typical for me. I kept thinking maybe if I canceled my surgery and made the commitment "once again" to diet and exercise that I would not have to have medical intervention. The unknown scared me to death. But deep down inside I knew that it was not an option to back out. Saving my life with this surgery was my only option. The next morning, my surgery day, I felt sort of a calm acceptance and just went through the motions. I'll be two weeks post-op on Thursday. I've had five surgeries in the past and this was by far the easiest for me and I'm so glad I went through with it. I can tell already this is going to be the best decision I've ever made for myself. You've got this! I wish you the best tomorrow! 😊 -
This is from the ASMBS website- Q: Do I need to avoid caffeine after bariatric surgery? A: Caffeine fluids have been shown to be as good as any others for keeping you hydrated. Still, it is a good idea to avoid caffeine for at least the first thirty days after surgery while your stomach is extra sensitive. After that point, you can ask your surgeon or dietitian about resuming caffeine. Remember that caffeine often comes paired with sugary, high-calorie drinks, so be sure you’re making wise beverage choices.

Congratulations! I'm so happy you received your approval. 😊

Hi Kate just getting back to you on the weight loss. I lost 5.6 pounds. I hope you're doing good and are getting rid of some of that fluid retention.
-
Congratulations! I hope you have a smooth recovery. If the water doesn't go down well try heating it up a little.
-
I'm waiting til tomorrow when I have my one week follow up to weigh so I'll let you know then. It feels like I lost because I can bend over and put my socks on a lot easier. I'm afraid of the water retention too because of all this salty broth we've been drinking all week.

Pre op vitamin deficiencies delay surgery?
justmetj replied to ZizerZazerZuz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was low on Vitamin D and folate. My Dr. prescribed 50,000 units of vitamin D once a week along with a daily dose of folate. I only had two months of the vitamins before my 4-04-19 surgery and it was not delayed because of it. I was never low on iron though so you might want to call your Dr. and ask them. Also taking a multi-vitamin will help keep your levels up. -

Have many people not been advised a pre-op diet?
justmetj replied to Pippa1703's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have a pre-op diet. I just had to be on full liquids the day before surgery. -
Sorry about the multiple posts😬

On my plan, after a two week liquid diet, we are to self advance to the week 3 "purée" then week 4 "soft stage" when we feel our body can handle it. It seems like you should be close enough to listen to your body. I would just make sure to soft scramble it and take it slow. Good luck!
