I just had the worst conversation with my sister. I had called her to tell her I came from the endodontist who told me I have to have a root canal. I told her that as I was leaving he was like “good luck with your surgery, but you already look great.” And I was annoyed. So I was telling her I was annoyed and she said why? And I said “I guess I’m not comfortable with people commenting on my body” and she said “well you better get used to it and you’re going to lose weight so quickly that your mind won’t be able to keep up.” And I said “and also how does he know I’m having surgery to look good? What if I want to feel good?” And she said “I feel like most people have surgery to look good” and I said “well you can feel whatever you want but the science says otherwise. People have this surgery to resolve a ton of other medical problems. Skinny people who have uncontrolled diabetes have it in order to help their diabetes” and she’s like “well you’re having it to look good.” And she knows why I’m having it. It’s because my feet hurt, my knees hurt, I can’t be active anymore. I’m ashamed to leave the house sometimes. BTW my surgery is on Wednesday. I am single and wish she could be supportive but I just don’t think it’s in her. She is taking me to the hospital though. my mom passed away in March, and I really wish she was here right now.

Who bashed? Did someone delete their post or are you being super dramatic? None of us need added drama or negativity here and none of us need silencing for giving our opinion respectfully when asked.
OP: I loved phentermine and have used it several times but the re-gain and increased hunger after using it wasn't worth it to me. I haven't tried it post surgery. The effects post surgery might be different. You could always try it and if it doesn't work then stop it. Maybe with the surgery it won't be as hard going off of it. If you do try it please post your experience so we can all learn from each other.

I don't consider trying to help someone as "bashing." You may have a different opinion, but there's no need for hostility.

Your tastebuds might be wonky so don't stock up too much on foods/ liquids ahead of time. I couldn't stand certain things like diet gatorade and canned Tomato Soup and I stocked up. Bring a short sleeve robe with you to the hospital. Do buy some anti-constipation meds/suppositories and use them as preventative not after you have a rock poo that wants to stay put!

I'm the same way. Most surgeons give you a free consult so try someone else and let them know you are planning on switching (not thinking about but planning on) and see what happens from there. You might get good feels for the new surgeon too and all of your testing can be transferred over.

I'm happy to say my surgery has been scheduled for July 23rd. The coordinator finally called me this week and apologized for the earlier mix up. She went into a big explanation about what might have happened but honestly I was so glad to finally talk to someone I didn't care. Thanks!!! 😊

My first poop was more scary and more painful than delivering my first child. And I had no drugs and he had a big melon. Memories of my first poop give me more anxiety than the 2 kidney stones i have to get blasted soon. More pain than the last 6mm stone I passed with no drugs or medication. That's how much I feel your feels. I just bought the cheap glycerin suppositories at Walmart. It is around $4 for a ton of them or $2 for a starter bottle. You pop one in and watch TV or take a hot bath and 15-30 minutes later you have soft serve instead of icicle. That has alleviated a lot of my worries, knowing I dont ever have to granite poo again. (So glad this discussion isnt on fb and we can be totally candid!)

Is it relieved with tums or pepto bismol? I had pain in the same spot that would come randomly and be severe and it turned out it was a hernia. (Pre wls) I wonder if it could be an ulcer?

Hey! So I'm not sure if I'm overpacking but I also packed pads (my nurse said women tend to get their menses from stress and the pads at the hospital are super uncomfortable), body wipes and feminine wipes.

Maybe Bariatric Surgery is a degreaser? Seems to have demolished your Bubble Butt, and. you're lucky you didn't lose your Upper Story, because I did- now I have the tube sox with the 2 tennis balls. Any more and I will have to install Seat Belt Retractors so I can roll them back up and replace them in my bra. Maybe I can find a lying bra, one that makes me look "perky" not recently demolished!😳

To explain better, I used to have to dress around my bubble butt even at lower weights than I am now. But the bubble butt oddly got less bubbly. And my boobs which are always the first to go, didn't shrink up as much as I predicted. You might find yourself wanting a mermaid design or total other type of dress that you previously never thought would look good on you.

Also your proportions might shift around. I would lose in odd places and not in others so that certain clothes I owned would look bad/weird on me instead of just too big.

And I totally know what you mean by poop anxiety! I had no idea poo would be a worry so I wasn't prepared. Now I have the suppositories in every bathroom.

Use the glycerin suppositories. It softens up your poop so you aren't pooping granite. I use them a few times a week especially when eating meat. supplements and Protein Powder and lack of Fiber really jack up our systems. I tried colace but I like the faster moving of the glycerin suppository. I've used milk of magnesia a couple of times but it takes over night to work. I don't want to be on laxatives for life or for my butt to forget how to poo so I feel more comfortable with the glycerin, not that it is a joy sticking them up there. I'm only 2 1/4 months out of rny so I hope things work themself out.

Some type of rubber bottomed slippers or other easy to get on but not easy to trip you type of footwear for walking the halls. I loved my short sleeved zip up robe to wear on top of my gown to not show off my butt. I just zipped it up for my walks and zipped it open when I was in bed. Bring a magazine or something to read so you can sit up in a chair and do something if you don't feel like being on your phone. Underwear and pads because a lot of women will start their cycle early after surgery.

Sweettoothless reacted to danieocean in Anyone else have vision issues post-op?
So I went to my appointment, my eyes are overall healthy.
The ophthalmologist said that the dramatic weight loss caused a sudden loss in vision that was inevitable (based on my family history).
This coupled with never knowing I have short lower eyelids and when I blink my eyes never actually close completely and they don't close when I sleep. The doctor asked me 3 different times if I had a face lift or eye lift - at 28, I don't think I'm ready for that just yet.
I guess this issue is common with people who have different facial plastic surgery procedures and their eyes being pulled too tight and they end up with the same issue.
He said I was just born this way and will need to be on artificial tears for the rest of my life to avoid damage from chronic dry eyes. Being that I have been this way my whole life...I never felt like my eyes were dry, just sensitive...it's been my normal!
Hoping the combination of artificial tears and new glasses will fix these problems. I pick up my glasses. tomorrow so fingers crossed. After years of my family making fun of me and taking pictures of me asleep with my eyes open...now I know why I do that!!! I'm not weird, I have a medical condition dang it!!! LOL

pizza was a great food-love and now it tastes different. It tastes really bland and doughy. And just not appealing. Ice-cream was my other great food-love. Now I can't even eat it. I have tried a bite and it is so gross I spit it out. I hate everything about it, the texture, the sweetness, the mouth-feel. It blows my mind.

My surgeon's office doesn't require blood work until I'm 6 months out. I have a different plan of attack with my PCP. I did blood work a couple weeks ago and go in Wednesday to go over the results with him. I know through my extensive research that an improper balance of Vitamins and minerals can cause a lot of problems so I'm staying on top of it. My surgeon's office is directly tied to my insurance and the cost plays a huge role in their post-op plan for me. My personal doctor is concerned with my overall health so he has no problem ordering labs outside of the agenda set forth by my surgeon's office/Kaiser. He was quick to pull me off of my BP meds when the blood pressure came down and I was getting dizzy when standing up.
I know it's not the case in every situation but most of the WLS clinics are in it for the money. Service after the sale is not real high on their priority list. That's why I agree with the other posts that say "be your own advocate". In addition to that, find a good personal doctor that can do what it takes to get to the bottom of your problems by doing labs and getting you on a supplementation regimen that is unique to your situation. The cookie cutter approach that most nutritionists use doesn't work for everyone. They can give you generic guidelines like how much Protein and Water to consume but when it comes to supplements, the proof will be in the blood test results. I think once you get your levels under control, your body will normalize and start focusing on weight loss again.
I hope you start feeling better soon. Keep us updated. We're all in this together.

After my surgery I was feeling dizzy and light headed to the point I thought I was going to pass out. I conferred with my surgeons office and I didn't get much info. I made an appointment with my GP and he said that I was still taking the same level of BP meds that I took before my surgery. He took me off the meds and that did the trick.
In a group session someone brought this same topic up and it turned out that she was suffering from a Vitamin deficiency. It wasn't her surgeons office that helped her it was her nutritionist. Try going to different health care providers besides your surgeon. I'm sure there is someone who can pin point your problem and help you to resolve it. Sometimes the bariatric surgeon just doesn't cut it when we have problems after surgery.

Bumping up minerals is a good start, but to know for sure (or closer to it) you need to have labs done to see if you indeed have any deficiencies. Potassium, unfortunately, is difficult to supplement without prescription as OTC supplements are limited to about 3% of our RDA - not overly helpful. The best non - Rx source that I know of is the low sodium version of V8 juice, which has about 1200mg, or about 25% of RDA in a 12ish oz can and about 70 calories. Other real food sources are bananas, potatoes (about the best real food source per calorie), melons, berries and mushrooms. which can all help, but are hard to get a useful amount in early on with our volume and calorie constraints.

I don't worry too much about the timing of when I drank something before eating. Some people do what's called Water loading before meals to aid in satiety. You can google that if you'd like.
One of the elements that help you loose weight after a gastric bypass along with malabsorption is the restricted amount of food that you can eat at one sitting. Once you've eaten the predetermined amount of food and it's sitting in your pouch, it will have to start making it's way through the small opening (stoma) created by your surgeon from your pouch into your intestine. The stoma size is created with purpose. If too large, there will be little or no restriction. If too small, it will have to be expanded to allow food to pass.
If you eat too fast or too much at one sitting, you will cause the food to clog the stoma. Anytime you have a clog in your stomach whether it's a pouch or a sleeve, your body will naturally regurgitate and force the clog out the way it came in. Drinking during or after a meal will either cause the food to pass right through defeating the purpose of the stoma and small pouch or it will cause that blocking sensation that will trigger your body's regurgitation response.
I found out the hard way that contrary to my previous way of eating, drinking something to "wash down the food" will no longer work. It is a whole new lifestyle that you have to get used to. You will be consuming meals different than anyone else at the table. The timing of when you can take your first drink after eating will become more of a natural thing rather than a strictly regimented clock watching procedure as time goes by. Sometimes it's 30 minutes and sometimes it's over an hour for me. Just watch the signs and stay hydrated.
