I’m over 5 years post op but remember the torture the first few weeks were. I was lucky to live alone and not have to be around food. Now, I can tolerate and eat anything. What you are feeling is normal and will pass, best wishes on your journey.

Hi- I had RNY I almost 5 years ago. Got to 132 pounds and currently at 144. I am freezing all the time. It gets in my bones and I often have to sit in a hot bath to get warmed up. I ordered a heated vest. I take a heating pad with me to places when I can. Does anyone who also deals with this post op have any advice on what they do or wear? Thanks!

I am super lucky that I was reunited with my first love from 27 years ago in June and now we’re engaged and he adores every inch of me. Before him, if I was seeing someone and it seemed to be a potential, I would go he’d never let them know. My last boyfriend also had surgery. He wasn’t even a year out and was still eating all the junk and alcohol he wanted being in the honeymoon phase. After almost a year and him not changing, I ended it and then my now fiancé stepped on the scene!

just so you know, a 10- to 20 lb rebound from your lowest weight is VERY common in year 3. I think it's just your body settling in to a weight it feels comfortable at - your new "set point". Of course, you can still lose again if you cut enough calories - but it could be a bit of a struggle if you're fighting against where your body wants to be. I've been dealing with the same thing since year 3 (and here I am in year seven...).
different things work for different people. I count calories, which my dietitian hates (she's into "intuitive eating"), but I'm obviously not cutting back enough or I'd be losing weight. It's tough... I know other vets who've done Weight Watchers, Keto, and/or intermittent fasting. Whatever works - some approaches are more effective than others, depending on the person.
to respond to your questions (sort of, anyway...), I don't do low carb - but the vast majority of my carbs are the healthy kind (fruit, veggies, whole grains). I have to average around 100 grams of Protein a day because I malabsorb it (we discovered this pretty soon after my surgery), and I do manage to get that in every day. Other than protein, it's really just calories for me. If I stay in the 1500-1700 range, I can maintain my weight - but I'd really love to lose 10-15 lbs (!!)

Wine only for me. But let me warn you, you will get buzzed so quickly and my experience is I tend to “black out” if more than one glass. Being home alone for these months has prompted me to drink more out of boredom and I can see it potentially being an issue. My friend had VSG two years ago and is currently in rehab, alcohol is a slippery slope after WLS.

Whew, I’m on the struggle bus big time. I live alone and had a very active social life prior to this mess. So bored at home and it’s not the food as much as it is the wine. And not going to the gym, that’s been huge too. I started an anti depressant I April and it has been helpful. I had to lay to rest my dog of 14 years on May 30 so that was another whopper to deal with. Luckily, I’m working so I do get out, but overall it’s tough. And my mama got the virus- she lives a mile away from me and I haven’t seen her in two weeks and it will be another two weeks until I do. It starts in the mind and our thinking so I’m trying to read “mind” self help books. Best of luck to you, it’s such a weird and hard time!

You're not asking a stupid question. And it's not TMI. Goddamnit, people depress me sometimes.
First: when did you have surgery? Have you done coke before, and is this typical? Had you had alcohol since your surgery?
Just based on the timing, I'd guess that you've got a stomach bug and that this isn't related to the drug use. Anyone vomiting for three days would feel ache in their stomach. Did you have a flu shot this year? Are you drinking a ton of Gatorade or Pedialyte to make up for the dehydration? If not, your symptoms are just going to feel worse.
Even if this reaction has nothing to do with the coke or booze, you know that introducing a rogue element into a healing system isn't a good idea, obviously, and you'll be more careful in future. Good.
Few things make me bristle with rage. Idiotic responses like this would be one of them. Her question was related to WLS, since she's concerned there's been an interaction between the drugs and the surgery. She's asking for help because she's worried. I am incredibly angry that your response was the first here, as it is worthless.

Happy to read these comments as my surgery is fast approaching (2 weeks) and giving up alcohol is going to be my biggest struggle. I do not drink daily but I do drink often socially and at home sometimes and well, honestly- I love it. So, I know it is a trigger and I do not plan on attempting to incorporate it back in down the road.

I had wine two months out and I have a few glasses every weekend. I can tolerate it just fine like everything else, I’ve had zero issues. I loved wine before surgery and still do.

I was bypassed on dec 3, 2018 and had two glasses of wine about 8 weeks post op. Definitely had a buzz (I was a weekend drinker prior) and I am having a few glasses in the weekend. I have a very social life and am dating and I make sure to work out, drink plenty of Water and stay on food plan. I’m not giving up my wine and I have tolerated it as well as everything else 100% just fine. Don’t even feel like I’ve had surgery.

My plan is one cup of food, 3 times a day. With 3-4 oz Protein. I’m 11 weeks out today, I have zero restriction and never feel full. I could eat more but I don’t.

Thanks everyone- I am very strict with the Water rule- even tried an hour before and after but will try the 90 minutes as suggested. I was hoping I’d be one of those “omg I took 4 bites and was stuffed” success stories or at least hiccups, burps or nasal drainage, but I have nothing. I’m still down 40 pounds so I’m following the rules right. I appreciate everyone’s feedback!!
