I don't think it can be avoided. Some people get gerd after vsg and others do not. But, people who do get gerd after vsg, it is not their fault. Unavoidable. Of course if you eat right before going to bed, it doesn't help the matter but here is a good link that explains in layman's terms why 35% vsg patients get gerd.
    https://sampadocs.com/2019/12/23/reflux-after-gastric-sleeve/

Here is another very recent study if you would like to read it. It goes into the 3 reasons which contributes to gerd post-vsg, one reason is the shape of the sleeve. It is a hot topic now. https://www.jnmjournal.org/journal/view.html?uid=1643&vmd=Full

I've didn't seem to keep up with the blogging thing. But always appreciated the nice responses and well wishes I did receive the past year.
Maybe if I didn't wait until 1,2 3 am I would have kept up more.
A year ago I replied to "Steph" about regretting surgery 14 yrs ago. Got bombarded with recent and healthy patients (hope all stay healthy) asking what " I did wrong"' & continue doing wrong. "Why didn't do more homework" etc .
Well, July 31st @ 6 am Dr. Robert Davis will be doing a revision, "take down of RNY". OF course I'm terrified.. Wonder what is the point now... I already look like a freak. It's not going to give me my teeth back, that were once perfect now gone, won't fix my marriage of 14 years, certainly won't have men knocking down my door , the disability will never be enough for the estimated $20K to repair my mouth. So I'll avoid pics at call costs, don't have many with my kids past couple of years, taking bites or trying will be an issue. All the other body, mind damage won't all be repaired. This will hopefully stop it from getting worse, of course that's no guarantee either. But for what reasons ? This is what I keep asking myself OVER, OVER AND OVER . Just more financially in debt?
    More strain on marriage ?
If you're considering the gastric bypass with RNY or any weight loss surgery, I can't say do your homework because I did mine . It just didn't work out for me and I look and feel the worst I ever have in my entire life.
I'm not being like this the drag everyone down , but I want people to know there are more people out there like me.

RaeSlayVSG reacted to ShrinkingSydney in Stomach Ulcer Before Surgery
I was just recently diagnosed with an irritated stomach lining and a small ulcer. I was supposed to be getting my clearances for surgery next Thursday with only one appointment left and about a month left until my surgery date was scheduled. I was getting so excited but now I am really worried. Has this happened to anyone else? How far back is this going to set me?
I am also wavering on which type of surgery to get. I was pretty set on the sleeve because I have GERD ( but I also have a decent-sized hiatal hernia, so that could also be the cause). But I am now leaning toward the bypass for various reasons. My hesitation with the bypass is that I take medication for bipolar disorder and I'm worried about dosages and absorption with the bypass. Are bypasses more prone to ulcers? Or is it just harder to detect once you have them?
    Thanks for any advice!

bypasses are more prone to ulcers, sleeves are more prone to GERD. Although the GERD in sleeves is more common than ulcers in bypass. There are a lot of WLS'ers who take meds for bipolar disorder, both sleevers and bypassers. If necessary, they can adjust your meds (change dosage or brand) so you can absorb them.

Stress, which you sound like you have an abundance of, can trigger an inflammatory response. That in conjunction with a carb heavy diet (especially for a carb addict) will make the inflammation even worse.
Maybe time to look at the control center... your brain. Give it rest (for survival) , pray or meditate, seek out a group like OA for support.

I decided at this time to not revision to Gastric Bypass. My gerd started with bad eating and stress. I first needed to work on my eating and stress level.
My acid reflux is under control with a PPI. I still have little spikes of acid but I'm down to a Level 1 on a scale 1 to 10. I have been eating extremely slow and chewy my food completely. I cut out coffee and gerd triggered foods. It has helped 100%
I am giving myself until June 2020 that would put me at 3 years post op to see if the gerd has improved.
For me, diet changes and less stress have helped me. Another surgery, especially the bypass is major. I need to first exhausted all other options before undergoing the Gastric Bypass.

Let's stay in touch. I am praying for your surgery and help.

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've been on here. The last time I was here was sometime in April, I was almost 4 months postOp and about 6 or 7 weeks pregnant. Well for those who wonder if it's possible to go through the whole pregnancy while still trying to loose weight, the answer is YES! I am currently 33 weeks pregnant and my baby is doing extremely well. As for my weight, I'm pretty much still at my goal weight, plus or minus a pound here and there. But I haven't gained weight at all. Surprise, right? I am too. My baby now weighs just over 4lbs and I'm nesting like crazy, busy preparing nursery and awaiting his arrival. Feel free to ask any questions related to being pregnant and going through weight loss, and I'll do my best to answer. Oh and thank you to all of those who supported and encouraged me back in March/April, I really appreciate you all

people with acid reflux usually revise to RNY. It usually improves - if not outright cures - reflux.

I had the sleeve in March 2018 with hernia repair. The hernia failed and my stomach is in chest . I have acid reflux really bad, has anybody been through this and what revision surgery would be best. Thanks

    I was sleeved October 2016.
I had horrible reflux daily and was on several meds. I still gagged and vomited up acid daily. I also gained back 25 pounds I had lost. I was snacking all the time because if my stomach was empty I threw up.

I had my revision last Monday, September 2019.

So far so good. No reflux.
