So excited for you guys! I would love to hear more about you and your journey. I am 49, live in Austin and have struggled with weight my whole life. My surgery is actually a revision from the lap band to gastric bypass. I've spent the last three months researching like crazy and feel really great about this life changing decision!

This thoughtful and honest post was so helpful to me! I just had surgery on 10/11/21 and am writing down these points and keeping them on my fridge. Thank you for posting this 😀

Hello, I had a lap band in 2008 and it was essentially a failure. I've spent years going up and down with my weight and have finally come to a decision to have gastric bypass. I am really nervous but excited that I'm about to start on this journey. I have my first consultation with a bariatric surgeon this week (July 22). I am self pay because my health insurance has a specific exclusion for bariatric surgery. Given that I don't have to go through any insurance loopholes, I'm wondering how quickly it will be before I can schedule the surgery. For self pay patients, what is the average time from consultation to surgery?

As catwoman7 said, you will feel restriction when you get to the solid food stage. The more dense it is the less you can eat. I'm 3 yrs out and I still get my runny nose signal if I have one bite too much! That's why it's more important to follow your teams guidelines on how much to eat at certain stages. You will know if you eat too much...don't try to find out, it's not worth it! You get the "foamies" and wish you could throw it all up! As far as head hunger, yes it's a real thing! I think it gets easier. I didn't feel physical hunger for about a month and then it came back. Although I don't feel it often, I do feel it sometimes. I sometimes have to remind myself to eat because if I wait until I feel hungry that might not happen.
Congratulations on your surgery! I wish you much success!

Also, some solid foods "sit" longer than others. Ground meat just sits in my belly forever, but lunch meat just slides right through. It's so weird.

Learn what your body's new "full" signal is like (for me, I start to get the burps and a feeling like someone is pulling a rubber band across my chest) and then stop one bite earlier.

Hi all! I am so thrilled to see so many replies to this topic! I got so busy pre-op that I haven't been able to post until now. I hope everyone who has already had their surgery is doing great and wish everyone good luck who will have the surgery soon!
I had my surgery on October 11th. Everything went very well. I stayed in the hospital overnight. My only complaint was on the first night when I was experiencing pain where the incisions were (now the incisions are just unbearably itchy because they are healing). I wasn't hungry AT ALL for the first week or so and had a hard time getting all my Water and Protein in. This last week, however, I have been a bit hungrier and have been making some protein smoothies which have been really good for me I think.
I just posted this in a separate thread, but I am terribly worried because I am feeling no constriction at all during this liquid phase. I start soft/pureed foods on 10/25 so I'm hoping I'll feel the constriction. Also experiencing what I think is head hunger rather than real hunger.
    Again, wish everyone the best!

you're not likely to feel restriction until you get to the solid food stage. liquids go right through you - and purees, although slower to move through, still go through pretty fast. Solid food sits there for awhile, though - so you should feel the restriction then.

Hey! I didn’t have bypass. I was sleeved. But I wouldn’t try to chug anything ever. Small sips/regular sip is what I always do.
I’m not sure if bypass pt feel restriction. But I will tell you head hunger is a real thing. I’d turn the channel when you see something that temps you or distract yourself with some type of activity, book, go for a walk etc
Learning how to do that is important I think. At least it was for me. Figuring out whether I just want something as opposed to actually hungry for it. Good luck to you! This app/forum I’ve found to be super helpful since my sleeve 3 years ago.

    1. Figuring out what to do with the pissed off/sad feelings when food wasn't an option to self soothe with.
    2. Grieving no longer liking foods I've used as a comfort crutch for a lifetime.
    3. Being suprised that this is a lifelong challenge, a lifelong calorie count, a lifelong need to be mindful, a lifelong fight.
You don't "overcome" this. You learn more strategies to deal with disordered eating....every day....for the rest of your life. You learn more about how you ended up fat. You learn more about yourself.
Most newbies think of weighloss surgery in terms of....
    First hurdle....getting surgery
    Second hurdle..surviving post surgical diet
Third hurdle..doing extreme things to get down to goal weight as soon as possible. (terrible idea)
    and at Goal....the fantasy ends.
The typical Newbie thinks goal weight is the yellow brick road happy ending with a rainbow over it. Goal Weight is arriving at the destination you will never depart from. It is THE END, the reward, Bliss, Victory, blah blah blah...
The problem with arriving at goal....is that you wake up the next day....and you're still you. LOL.
Look past goal. Goal isn't the end. You don't get fixed just because you reach goal. Your brain and eating aren't less disordered. You have to work through all sorts of weird behavior and fix the parts of you that need attention...the parts that drove you to morbid obesity.
That's the real challenge....living permanently with new eating habits, new physicality, and finding new outlets for toxic feelings that don't end up being self sabotaging.
The work is never done. I won't say it doesn't eventually get easier. But it's never done.
I will be working on this big life change....for the rest of my life.

One of the bigger challenges many people face is thinking the surgery magically fixes you (it doesn't), thinking that the surgery does the work (it doesn't, but you do), and thinking that you're cured somehow at goal.
    You are just getting started.
