JessLess reacted to Creekimp13 in Why the same advice over and over?
Most of the veteran posts, lets face it.... are "Help, I've regained!"
And the response I see over and over and over and over is...
"Go back to basics...starve yourself at 1000 calories a day (or less)...start drinking protien shakes....do keto...blah blah blah"
I don't mean to criticize heartfelt advice...and I know some of ya'll are genuinely trying to help.
But why in the world would you tell someone to do the same thing over again....that didn't work the first time?
    It seems nuts to me.
My two cents: see a bariatric therapist. Stop the self punishment. Stop the self sabotage. Stop the self harming extremes.
Get down to the real reasons you're addicted to food, what you're medicating with it...and work on fixing those issues.
If you do....making slow reasonable changes to your diet that have slow but steady results....will work.
You don't have to starve. You don't have to do very low calorie diets that hurt your metabolism, your bone density, and your muscle mass.
You don't have to be so freaking EXTREME.
Breathe. Make reasonable changes you can live with for a lifetime. No crash diets. They don't work. You know this. How many years experience do you have KNOWING that this approach doesn't work? Stop running from the real issues.

Three years out, 75 lbs. gone, no regrets at all on my gastric sleeve surgery. I eat lots of fresh fish and fruit and veggies. It freed me from obsessing about food. ✨

I also have bipolar disorder and my surgeon and psychopharmacologist both suggested I do sleeve rather than bypass, which I wanted due to possible GERD. I don't take anything that is extended release, but they still felt it would be better for absorption. I got a second opinion from a different surgeon, and she didn't think I'd have any problem with bypass, but she still recommended sleeve as it's an easier operation. I decided to go with sleeve... I'm still nervous about the surgery upending my mental health, but I am taking the risk to be able to be more active.
Just stay in touch with your mental health providers so you can let them know right away if you're starting to struggle.

I had to switch one of my psych meds from extended release to immediate release after my bypass. Fortunately, I didn’t notice any difference in effectiveness after the switch.

I've been taking Wellbutrin for years and post-surgery it works just as well as it did before at the same dosage.
But I also take Xanax (anti-anxiety) and after losing 105 lbs. I found that the dosage had to be reduced because it was now having a stronger, more sedating effect. I'm now at an optimal dosage though.

This advice is perfect! I'm almost 3 years out and the only things I still use are... a scale and Vitamins. But a food scale, blender, Protein Shakes, and lots of bottled Water were all good tools along the journey. I'd avoid buying a lot of anything or paying a lot for anything until you know you want it.

My mom had the gastric sleeve before I did and an unrelated problem came to light a little over 2 years after her surgery. She had a congenital defect of her colon where about a foot would become paralyzed and loop itself. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly the same. She had to have emergency exploratory surgery to finally fix it because for over 6 months all the doctors thought it was just a complication from the gastric sleeve procedure or because of the types of food she was eating. Neither of which was actually the case. She couldn't eat, she would throw everything up, her bowel was very irregular, and she had extreme abdominal pain. If that sounds familiar, I would suggest looking up "cecal volvulus".
Before the surgery, she was eating larger portions which would mask the condition, but because she now eats much smaller portions, the defect in her colon became obvious.

I suggest working with a bariatric therapist (see if your surgery center can recommend someone) because the cravings will not go away on their own, and if you had problems with binge eating before, it will hinder your progress, even if you lose weight in the beginning, you will start to regain. Good luck!

My doctor warned me about post surgery depression as I really like eating/tasting. I am having guests tomorrow and my mum îs cooking good food. I am not hungry but I have saliva into my mouth for craving what îs around me. Îs my second Day at home after surgery on Thursday. I did not think how much difference this surgery îs going to do in my life...
So any tips for handling food dispar?

So I had my mini 3yrs ago. About 6-7 weeks ago I had some chicken salad and filled up way too quickly.
That night severe pain. After that I could not even look at food for 4 days (unheard of). I could drink. Since then pain on and off but feeling really unwell. Sometimes the feeling of eating too many green apples - kinda acidic. Sometimes just upset abdomen and discomfort. I am just not feeling right at all.
I spoke to the surgeon today and he said I need a gastroscopy but told him I had one 2mths ago and was normal so sending him. I am also to have an Upper GI swallow.
I asked him if it can seriously be a complication 3yrs later and he said yes.
    Anyone else??

I also cancelled my surgery after the consultation..I went home thought about it...and opted out...Now 4months later...I have rebooked for 31st august...My only concerns about medication is the addiction... most diet pills give you an adrenalin high..like speed..

    Congratulations with moving forward!
I personally don’t know anyone still using diet pills after surgery but if you struggle with any addiction you probably should seek treatment separately.

I’m going to throw in- don’t over buy!
I bought Protein powders I never used or hated after surgery. I have 2oz disposable containers, never used them. They gave me a number of medicine cups when I was discharged, just used those the first few days. I have electrolytes, never needed, I drank fluids fine. I got compression socks - didn’t need, just used the ones from surgery.

Your tastes can change, so only get a few of something, because you might find you don’t want it after surgery.

You might want to ask your surgeon's office as well. They can help advocate for you.

When you are a year or two out, vegetables and fruit that's low on the glycemic index (most berries) are a great way to fill up if your appetite returns. Don't worry!
