Trader Joe's

Ditto - best soup ever! Also, ok for the liquid pre-diet with my doc - 6 oz. a day. Best part of the day. Trader Joe's has great prices on organics - milk, butter, juices, veggies, etc. and a great selection of interesting stuff. Plan to spend an hour your first visit but just don't take everything that looks good - you'll never eat it all.

A WEIGHT LOSE SECREt!!

I started using the Daily Plate when I went on my pre-op (before the liquid) diet and I love it! I've gotten a couple friends who are into health and fitness on it too. I love tracking not only calories but Fiber, sodium and cholesterol too! I had to lose 8 pounds before my doctor would accept me for surgery and I just switched to whole foods with high fiber and low cal. Daily plate really keeps me in line. It also helps me figure out triggers - ie I eat more when I eat nutrasweet. So now I simply don't eat it. I get banded Wednesday and after a couple weeks have to stay within 1200 calories and DP makes it east to track and also ensure that I am getting the best bang for my caloric buck!
4. So I'm walking around costco thinking that in 8 days I'm going to be banded and trying to resist all the temptations while I'm on my liquid diet. What temptations? Why all the free samples they pass out in almost every corner of Costco! So I realized that if I go on a weekend and get 4-8 free samples, with my new, tiny, banded tummy this will be a complete lunch for me! Granted even buying lunch at Costco is dirt cheap ($2 for a huge piece of pizza that filled me up pre-band) but now it's free. :biggrin2: I like free. Anyone else have great ideas on scoring free (but tiny) meals?

Just For Fun: Unique Free Meal Ideas

Oh no worries - there are lots of trash cans around. :biggrin2: OK, so maybe a free meal in a year or so when we really know what we can keep down!

Conservative Family Doctor?

I would look my doctor in the eye and ask "Weight Watchers? And how many people do you know that have lost a significant amount of weight on WW and kept it off long-term?" My guess is very few. (I know one person who has lost weight long-term and that was through Atkins - and this is obese long-term, not baby weight or other short term weight.) Diet and exercise has a 6-7% long-term success rate, WLS has a 50% success rate. If your doctor won't acknowledge this fact find another one. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Ignorance is not conservative - it's just ignorant. And a health care profession who thinks being obese is "natural" and acceptable isn't worth the paper his medical degree is printed on. Find a doctor who understands the true heartache of diets that fail and who is willing to use science (when did science become a bad thing?) to solve a medical problem. Then when you are thin and gorgeous, and your mom's been through it too and is thin and gorgeous, you can visit the first doctor and let him know what you really think of his "ignorance." :biggrin2:

I totally messed up my liquid diet...

It is hard. I'm on day 7 of a 14-day liquid diet and I am starving! I thought it would get easier after the first two days but it's getting harder. But I haven't cheated and won't because the stakes are just too high! I too like the sugar-free popsicles and am allowed three SF fudgsicles a day. Trust me I eat them! I also save the majority of my calories for the evening. I am starving by 6 pm, but a couple servings of cottage cheese and my 6 oz of soup (although I screwed up and ate 8 oz a couple times because I forgot it was 6 - think I'll survive it though) plus my 3 fudgsicles fills me up nicely and gets my mind off food until about noon the next day. Do tell your doctor. I'm not sure I could stay on track if someone I cared about passed away unexpectedly and they will understand. Also, if you are really good the four days before - maybe just clear liquids - you might still have good results. But either way, the surgeon needs to be informed in order to make the best decisions for you. Now, if you will excuse me I need to go chew an arm off. Self-cannibalization has no calories you know. Just like broken cookies where the calories leak out.....

Who's Getting Banded in July?

I'm not very superstitions but I just realized that my mom died in August of '88 and my dad died in August of '98 and I would probably not schedule my surgery for August of '08! So I actually can understand your hesitation. But I would reverse the question - do you know of anyone in your circle who has died on the anniversary of someone else's death? If so, maybe you should be nervous, but if not what are the odds of dying the same day as someone you cared about dying? My guess is that odds of dying the same day as someone else you knew are far lower than the odds of dying any other day, so maybe you are statistically better off having your surgery that day?!?! :biggrin2: Ok, there is actually a whole lot of false logic in that, as there is in any superstition too. But you do have to consider these things because the power of the mind is huge and if you psych yourself into believing that something can be dangerous it does make it more dangerous. And the reverse is true, if you believe you will survive, you will have little pain, you will recover quickly, etc., it is more likely that those things will happen. This surgery has a very low mortality rate and most of that is from complications such as drug reactions or infections. Do some research and see if that makes you feel any better. But ultimately, this is your body, your surgery and your decision. If you are not comfortable with a date then change it, ASAP so the surgeon can move someone into your place. Just make sure you are not trying to find excuses to put off the surgery. If you are truly not ready for the surgery then admit that to yourself and make your decisions from there – maybe you just need more time to alter your life this way. In any case, YOU have to decide what is best for you. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Warning!!!!

In some states this is grounds for divorce where the injured (laughed at) party gets ALL the marital assets! :biggrin2: In all seriousness, I'm not so sure about banding now. I mean Alli has exactly the same results but costs a whole lot less! Ok, serious isn't in me. But thanks for the warning. I will be careful in bed, in the car riding home, at work for weeks, in a chair, in a boat with a goat...

Why am I keeping it Quiet???

Thank you very much Altered! Sniff sniff. :biggrin2: Side note - I've now told eight people and number 8 was as great as number 1 so you can tell people - just be choosy. And when the weight is gone I will be telling everyone who wants to listen about the miracle I found which did what nothing else ever did - made me a perfect (size) 10! But for now don't tell anyone! :rolleyes2:

Who's Getting Banded in July?

I forgot too so I just did a new one and pasted the new URL in my signature. If you go back a few posts there's a link to setting up a ticker and you can just do a new one with the one info. (Actually I forgot my password so I had to redo but it's really easy.) Hope this helps and I will post a new list of names/dates with additions tomorrow.

Looking for other San Diegains...

Actually physically it hasn't been too bad - I haven't even consumed all the Protein shakes and other liquids I'm allowed to either day. The head hunger is a bit worse - it's a very strict diet and I'm dying for a crunchy starch or a nice piece of solid protein. :biggrin2: But I am determined to get through it without falling off the wagon as failure after banding could undo all pain of surgery. I did have something that really helped. Monday I went in for a bunch of tests including a barium swallow. I wasn't allowed to eat until 2 that afternoon (since 8 the night before) and the barium was very unsettling to my tummy so I ended up eating very little that day. The next day I didn't eat until 1 and had a light lunch of sushi. For dinner I did have a bean/cheese/rice burrito as it might be my last ever, but for the day I was still well under my calorie allowance. I think this helped to shrink my stomach a little and has made the process easier. You may want to see if you can put off the barium until right before the liquid diet as it might kill your appetite too. I am very glad I don't go crazy on my last day of "freedom" and eat everything in sight. I think it would have been a lot harder to not eat the next day. Trust me, the time passes very quickly and you soon will be shrinking your liver too! Keep us posted about the process. Where are you now?

Who's Getting Banded in July?

Hi Slinderella: Wow, you are having a tough time of it! You may want to post this question in the area with people who have already been banded to try and see if they think you can handle both situations at the same time. How much do you have to help him out? Moral support or actual physical duty including cooking, cleaning, helping to lift, etc? If all he needs is moral support maybe the time off with both of you recovering will be good. If you have to help him with his daily living it might just be a little too much right after surgery. :cursing: Not much of an answer I know but I just don't have the expertise to help. Hopefully some people that have already been banded will help out.

Driver's license, small victory

Congrats. I never bothered to "correct" my weight so mine is not even close but I will be just as thrilled when I hit it. So how often will you demand they change it now? Every 20 pounds?:biggrin2:

Looking for other San Diegains...

Hi Lizzy: I get banded in two weeks and am just starting my two week liquid diet today. I'm with Dr. Horgan and my understanding is that different practices have different requirements, but feel free to ask me any questions you wish. Best of luck and we look forward to watching you progress.

Sensa - 'Sprinkle Diet' on the News

Suspect it's like everything else. It will work for someone long term, for most of us it won't. Doesn't deal with emotional eating or the physiological aspects of obesity which they are just discovering. On the other hand, it may make our 5 bites of food at dinner taste terrific! :smile2: As a side note - first day on the two week liquid diet. Wouldn't mind some flavor enhancers about now!:biggrin2:

Who's Getting Banded in July?

If anyone doesn’t know how to add a graphic to their signature I thought I’d give a quick and hopefully somewhat correct tutorial one what I did through trial and error. I did a right click on "copy" on the graphic from someone else post. (No idea how I sized it smaller - I didn't think any of those were taking. So you can right click mine if you want a smaller graphic or go back a page and copy one of the larger ones.) Then go up to "Edit Profile" on the upper right list of personal links at the top of the page. On the new page click on "Edit Signature" (or something like that) on the left side of the page. When your signature opens go to the edit box and do a right click and a "paste" to put your graphic in the signature area. You can test it until it comes up the way you want it and add other info you think is important. If you want to add a ticker (and I love tickers - let's me know where people stand on the weight loss and other info) go to: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f5/ticker-tutorial-pictures-41782/

Who's Getting Banded in July?

Hi All: Here's an updated list of all July banders I know to date. One of the other threads was also trying to come up with a July name and decided on 'July Butterflies.' Since it had been democratically selected and they already had a cool graphic I went ahead and stuck it in my signature forgetting it would show up immediately! :biggrin2: Lots of great suggestions, too many to try and advocate one, so I cheesed out and went with the ready made. :frown: July 2nd is definitely the most popular date. Don't forget to keep track of mileage and other travel expenses for medical care and to do your charity work. They can add up to a nice little deduction. www.mapquest.com does a nice job of giving you the miles from point A to point B.
