    3 mo Progress Pic!

Thanks guys! I've been relying on lots of advice here as I'm in a 3 week weight loss stall. But pics don't lie and my body is still changing. Im doing lots of weight training and found out I need waay more water and waaay more calories to get my weight moving again. Anyway my scale shows im gaining muscle so that is a win. Food is not agreeing with me. Something that goes well one week causes a 2 hour vomiting stomachache episode the next week so I'm trying to stay loose with the plan and focus on softer protein sources like stew, cottage cheese (ugh), yogurt (ugh) and shakes (blech!)

  3. Excited about my latest stats!  6 weeks post op, 57 lbs down, 4" lost from my chest, 6.5" lost from my waist, 8" lost from my hips, 4" off each thigh, 4" off each bicep.  Kicking ass and loving it!

    Water and hunger

Same. I'm only 6 weeks post-op gastric bypass so I definitely don't have a lot of answers. But often when I drink I suddenly feel hungry. Whenever I eat I definitely feel thirsty. I'm working hard to meet my water goals (100 oz) and when I do I rarely feel hungry at all. My best guess is that a lot of the times that I felt hungry before I was actually thirsty. I think my brain has the signals mixed-up so I just focus on that water and eat when I should.

Wondering about experiences with exercise post-surgery

I was having a terrible time with exercise tolerance before surgery. I'm almost 6 weeks post op now. I did some basic walking before surgery and was usually winded 10 min into my 30 min walk. It sucked. But, I got back into my walking within a couple of days post op and for me, my exercise tolerance was better within a week. 2 weeks post op I was back in the gym doing elliptical and treadmill, easily making it to 30-45 min. I'm currently doing short warm ups on cardio machines and focusing on weight training. My muscles feel tired after my workouts but I have a ton of energy. I feel like an entirely different person already - so much stronger.

    Food Before and After Photos

Oooo, this reminds me. Thank you for the recommendations of cocoa nibs and hemp seed in your yogurt parfaits! I've started eating fancy yogurts of my own. Today was Light and Fit caramel apple yogurt with unsweetened coconut, hemp seeds, chia and a sprinkle of sliced almonds. Thanks for the tips!

How long was it before raw veggies and salad greens sat well with you? I'm a couple of weeks away from being able to start adding them in and I'm a little apprehensive. Most things I try go ok for me but when they don't, it's real bad. Were they tricky to incorporate?

Almost 5 weeks post op RNY. Feeling great! Had to search high and low for this pic, haha. You know how it is. But it's nice to see some changes happening. Pics are 2 mo ago and today.

Who is sick of purees? Some fresh ideas...

Are you measuring your food? I use ramekins and both weigh and measure volume to ensure I don't over fill. Yes, I was measuring from the beginning (by weight with a digital scale); it has just taken some time to figure out how much I need to eat. I'm much better already (only a week later) at knowing how much to serve myself. I'm also no longer struggling with the food aversions I was having. Sometimes 1 bite was all I could do and I kept saving because I thought I'd try again later or the following day. I'm happy to say, all of that is going much better. Thanks for checking in!

    PUMPKIN SPICE YOGURT, PSA

OK, even though I know there’s a whole bunch of you that are going to disregard this PSA, here goes: I am tired of all the sugar free yogurt flavors from OIKOS and Dannon Light & Fit. I try to eat plain Fage as much as I can but sometimes I need some flavor and I’ve just been able to start adding fancy things to my yogurt. So, imagine my excitement when I found this little gem today! It. Is. So. Gross. I mean, right when I got the spoon close to my face, I knew it was going to be terrible, but I did it anyway. Do not eat this item. It is not food. Now, I don’t know why I was excited in the first place. I don’t like pumpkin pie OR pumpkin spice anything. I love cinnamon & nutmeg but I lean toward apple not pumpkin. And pumpkin pie is particularly revolting as the texture is disgusting as well. So, why would I buy this? THAT’S HOW DESPERATE I AM, PEOPLE! You’ve been sufficiently warned. Do what you will.

    PUMPKIN SPICE YOGURT, PSA

That's so cool! I use the very small pie pumpkins when I cook and they are much less watery (not great for carving) My favorite way to use it is in a Thai Pumpkin Curry full of coconut milk, garlic, and spiciness. A little sprinkle of cashews and cilantro on top makes it!

    The Fall

I usually find them easily at the local restaurant supply grocery store. ie: Cash & Carry, Smart & Final or Smart Foodservice Warehouse They have Toriani and Monin brand in sugar free pumpkin spice as well as about 30 other flavors. Hopefully you can track one down near you. I bet homemade will taste amazing.

    The Fall

OMG, I literally just posted about a nasty Pumpkin Spice Yogurt I tried today. Anyway, I'm a summertime person, so the beginning of autumn feels like the end of my fun. To top it off I'm in Oregon so it's also the start of the 8 months of clouds/rain/no sun. Comfort food is how I usually get through. I have winter restaurants that are cozy, comfort food places with fireplaces that I only go to in the winter. That food is not going to work for my pouch this winter. So, I'm thinking of trying to find the coziness without the comfort food. My husband and I love to camp in the fall and winter - everything feels cozy and tastes great when you're bundled up under a canopy in the rain eating things roasted over the campfire and drinking hot beverages - so that will definitely work. But for your average day, I'm going to start mixing in some hiking in the woods for my exercise (we don't mind getting wet in Oregon). I really think that a shower, a hot drink and climbing under a blanket with my kids after a cold, wet hike will be the Ultimate in cozy comfort!

I love roasted pumpkin - that is absolutely the right way to eat it!

    Food Before and After Photos

This is my first time eating food not prepared at home. I’m 4 ½ weeks post RNY and am eating soft foods and trying one or two new regular foods a day. This was delicious and it went down really well. It’s 2 street tacos: 1 barbacoa and 1 carnitas; and one side of refried beans. I broke it down to a more manageable size on a small plate onto which I measured out 1 oz each (by weight) of barbacoa, carnitas and beans. This took me 20 minutes to eat & I have enough leftovers to last a week!
  19.  Well, I'm 4 1/2 weeks post op and feeling really great!  I'm down 27 lb and 2 sizes since surgery and I got the all clear to start weight lifting again now that my hernia is mostly healed.  So excited to fit back in my cute coats for winter!

    Needing Support

Hi, I had the bypass but I have been able to drink fairly easily since the first day post op. I'm 4 weeks out now and can drink with no issues at all. But, I was able to have a bite of chicken today and even though I chewed it a thousand times, it hit me like a brick. I had to walk around, I was so uncomfortably full. Consider it a blessing that your liquids go down easy. Dehydration is the worst

    Post op weightloss

Hey welcome! You hit your first stall, yay! Now you can get it over with. I read so many posts here about stalls and they were so, so helpful for getting me through. Let me try to help you out! It is totally normal, in fact, expected that you'll hit a weight loss stall sometime between 3 - 6 weeks after surgery. I am 4 weeks post op and I just came out of my first stall that lasted 1 week. Your body is adjusting to the new normal, your fluids are all out of whack and your body is freaking out. As you slowly increase your protein and calories, your stall will break on it's own. However, your body is still getting smaller. You are losing fat which you can measure on a body composition scale. (well priced around $35 on Amazon) Your clothes are about to be looser, you're going to have more energy and all kinds on non-scale victories are going to crop up for you. Enjoy those while the scale is acting like a turd. You've got this!

    Not as expected

If it helps, this was my checklist. Each hour had a series of boxes marked water, liquid, food. These represent 1oz so everytime I drank one, I checked off the box. Under Protein, I wrote how many grams of protein I got during that time. Under meds, I wrote down which meds I was supposed to take during that hour. I really hope this helps! post op med fluid tracking.xlsx

    Not as expected

Congratulations on your surgery. I'm so sorry you aren't feeling well. The first week is brutal, the second week is better but tough in different ways. Keeping up on meds, vitamins, food and water can be very overwhelming especially when you feel horrible and your brain is on pain meds. My husband was incredibly helpful to me post op and created a schedule for protein drinks, water and meds. He set a timer on my phone for everything and had a little checklist for me to work on. It all runs together so this was really helpful to me. Falling behind on meds, water and protein is so easy to do in the early days and it will make you feel so much worse! I was left unsupervised for an afternoon on day 6 while he took the kids to do something fun - I decided to ignore the alarms and just sleep because I was exhausted. I felt like absolute crap and was a mess when he got home. If you can get a helper, I highly recommend that for another week if you can do it. If not, sit down and get your protein, water and meds lined up and a checklist to keep track. Maybe as your pain meds are wearing off and you aren't as fuzzy mentally. Then just plug along and stick to the schedule. I'm not sure what your program recommends, but for vitamins, I only had to take a multivitamin during my first 3 weeks of recovery. I didn't have to start all the crazy supplements until after I saw my doctor. By then, I was feeling great and ready to get on track with them. Here's a great pill organizer https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TEWKMM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Good luck!

    Milk problems

Milk definitely messes with me but that's because I'm lactose intolerant. However, I did read than many people are lactose intolerant after surgery even if that was not the case before surgery. My stomach sometimes feels irritated when I have regular milk which is closely followed by bloating and gas. You could try Fairlife milk which is lactose free and is higher in protein than regular milk. It works really well for me. Or you could consider carrying some chewable Lactaid tablets with you when you're out if you want to get a coffee. Hopefully it's just the lactose because that's the easiest to work around. Good luck!

    Regrets

OK, I haven't tried these yet because I'm still on puree but I've got my eye on them! This company makes pizza and enchiladas. They have 2 types of pizza crust, one made from cauliflower, and one make from chicken! What?! Anyway, reviews seem to be good. They have the pizzas at Fred Meyer here but I haven't seen any of the enchiladas around. I think you can buy them on Amazon or search for a store nearby. https://www.realgoodfoods.com/
