    February 2019 weight loss buds

Heck yeh. I've been having my "last meals" all week...maximizing my favorite foods before all-liquid diet starts on February 3. 😜

Wait, so you think this egg drop soup would be OK on an all-liquid diet?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hi Fabulous February Folks! I have a question about what you think is OK on the liquid diet (all-liquids). Did you hear or get info from your nutritionist that these are acceptable when on liquids ONLY: chocolate milk, Vitamin Water Zero, and any soup (for example, Progresso) as long as the soup is drained through a tiny wire strainer? I was at the grocery store today trying to acquire a few basics for the liquidification 😀and saw these items. I thought I'd ask the group before I buy them. Note I do have some Unjury chicken broth, but I figure wouldn't the other soups just be broth as well once strained? Maybe more flavorful? Thanks!
  4. Thank you for this encouraging news! I was worried, but am feeling like as long as I prepare for the food situation with family and friends once we arrive, I should be OK!
  5. I'm having bypass surgery on February 13 and would like to take a 700 mile trip by car or air to see family (domestic, not international travel) to visit a college campus with my son and daughter (and husband) 3-4 weeks after gastric bypass. I expect to feel tired, but I'm wondering how I will feel physically in terms of internal pain, nausea, etc. that far out after surgery. I am not worried about managing my diet too much, mostly concerned if I will actually feel healthy enough to make the trip. What say ye?

We are surgery buddies! I'm going in on Feb 13 at 9:30 with surgery at 11:30am. I understand my surgeon has a "hard surgery" (whatever that means) before mine so hope mine will be a breeze when he's done with the first!

Recidivist--I too have heard that tastes can change dramatically after surgery. I have not heard about the consistency changing though (that is, from creamy to watery). I have been drinking Atkins shakes for a few years now in the car on my long commute to work. I like them so hoping I will still like them after the surgery. I do not like strawberry or vanilla shakes, so hope at least I will still like chocolate ones!

Emzbee, Congrats on a date! You will be going two days ahead of me. Thanks for all the great liquid-diet ideas. I know I will need them come February 3 when I start my all-liquid diet. So, just curious, how long has the process been in NZ? For me in the States, it took about 4-5 months once I had my first visit with the surgeon. Is it longer is NZ? Are you required to lose a certain amount of weight prior to being accepted for surgery? I ask because I am wondering how the program works in other countries. I'm fascinated by how different it is depending on who you have as a surgeon. Some folks, I understand, don't even have to go on a pre-op diet, or maybe just a 24-hour one. You live in my favorite country, by the way. 😀

That's amazing. I guess all surgeons have different requirements. I have to be on a complete all-liquid diet 10 days before surgery. Its gonna be hard!

    Same day as me BigBari!
  11. My doctor just prescribed Acitigall (generic Ursodiol) post surgery as my gall bladder looks great and is staying put. He said I would have to take it for 6 months after the surgery to prevent gall stones from forming. Has anyone had experience taking this medication? If so, how long did you take it and what side effects, if any, did you have? THanks!

    Actigall/Ursodiol Side Effects?

Thank you! I just hate the idea of adding medications when I'm trying to eliminate a lot of them through the procedure. I am glad to hear you did not have nausea or vomiting!

    Welcome to the Feb club!
  14. Thank you. We decided to fly to reduce travel time. We will be seeing a lot of family so I'll get my first experiences where social events involve a lot of food. This will be tough! I suppose I'm most worried about possible having post-op complications while away from home. I suppose the good news is that if I can do it, I'll feel more "normal" and back into the swing of things. I hope at least!

Idawn, I start my all-liquid diet on February 3--10 days before my gastric bypass. I appreciate you sharing your experience, I am not looking forward to this part as I'll be on liquids until about 3 or so weeks after the surgery when I can eat pureed foods. I only like chocolate protein shakes, so I suppose I'll be drinking a lot of those. I have not looked into any Isopure or Syntax products. If you recommend any you find for chocolate lovers, let me know. Also, I forgot that I think carbonated drinks are OK so I like the idea of using Sprite Zero with products. Hang in there and let us know what seems to work for you. You are on your way!!!! 😀

I wonder why this is. Did she elaborate? If we lose weight and feel better, why would that impact us mentally in a negative way? I've read this before in other places...but I don't understand it. Thanks, and glad you are on track. You got this!

Hey EmzBee-- What is the phsyc eval like in New Zealand? I'm in the United States and I was surprised at how limited mine was. All the psychiatrist did was give me a quiz of about 100 true of false questions. I take meds for both anxiety and depression and that wasn't even discussed. She seemed to want to know about my outlook about food, ensure I knew what life would be like after surgery, whether I had a support team, and general stuff--nothing too invasive. The meds never came up (even though I listed them). Some of the questions on the assessment were sort of funny to me--like "true or false, you were on the cover of 50 magazines during the past year." I think the assessment was to ensure I wasn't delusional. Some folks have issues with that. I think you will be fine, especially if you talk about what you are anxious about re: the surgery. But, like I said, it might be a lot different in New Zealand! Best wishes!

    I buried my 15 year old grand-son

No one, and I mean NO ONE should have to bury their child/grand child. I have two teens and can't imagine this happening to me. My sincere condolences. Praying for you to get through this pain as well best you can.
  20. I am scheduled to have RNY on February 13. I'm a Type 1 diabetic who has experienced some scary low blood sugars and I have a lot of anxiety about how to manage them post-surgery. I usually drink a lot of juice or have candy when my blood sugar drops and I know that I will not be able to do that after the surgery. I had a good visit with my Endocrinologist today and we discussed how to manage avoiding blood sugar drops, but I don't think she really gets how long (and how much I need to eat or drink) to get my blood sugars up when I'm crashing. She says just take in 15 grams of sugar/carbs and then wait 15 minutes. Sometimes it takes me an hour to get out of the 40s and it's a long, terrifying hour. I am not a fan of the glucose tablets, but I think that will be my best bet at getting my sugars up without being able to eat or drink much post surgery. I just purchased some glucose gel too (not a fan of the consistency though, and 15gs is a lot of gel). I'm wondering if any Type 1's out there encountered really low blood sugars after surgery and what they did to bring the sugars up. From what I read, dumping syndrome symptoms sound a lot like low blood sugar symptoms so it almost sounds like a lose-lose situation (having to chew on a lot of tablets to raise sugars, then getting dumping syndrome after that!). This really makes be nervous and anxious. Advice please? Thanks!

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Glad to finally be in a group with others going through this in the same month. My all-liquid diet starts Feb 3 with gastric bypass surgery February 13. Now that it's "real," I will savor every last minute with the food I eat. I can't imagine starting the liquid phase before I absolutely have too so kudos to those who can do that. I'd love to hear how creative you all are on what you find to "eat" during the liquid phase. I just ordered a variety pack of soups (broth). Does anyone know if pudding is welcomed on an all-liquid diet? I've heard yes and I've heard no. Best wishes for all those sharing in this group!
