  1. I used to take Omeprazole for GERD but when I had to stop taking it for two weeks for the H Pylori test, I wasn't having any, so I quit taking it. So I quit taking it for two months before surgery and thought I was "cured." Then after the sleeve I started getting heartburn and acid reflux, especially when I lay down. But I don't want to start the medicine again so I'm just putting up with it hoping it's temporary and will go away on its own soon.
    How have you been doing?
Has your hearburn or reflux gotten any better?
I am still struggling trying to ween off my pantoprozole now. Been off for 2 weeks and have been taking pepcid. Basically get heartburn everyday. I know rebound acid can be a thing. I am hoping it's going to get better [emoji25]

  2. I went 3 years with the GERD before my revision. I didn't get on med's until I went to a new surgeon to see about the revision, It helped right away. I found out about the Barrett's when he sent me for my pre op scope. I had gained 60 lbs with the sleeve after loosing 100 with the lap band (it went bad and had to come out). My revision has been a breeze. I'm down 40 lbs and feeling great. The recovery was easier than both my previous surgeries. I have no regrets what so ever.
I am so glad to hear you are doing well [emoji171]
A revision scares me but when I talk to others it makes me feel like if I need one I will be ok. 🥰
How often did you get heartburn, or reflux?
I seem to have it everyday.

  3. I got terrible reflux after my sleeve and developed Barrett's Esophagus. Got the revision in December and have had no reflux. I have been on nexium and now prevacid but am going to get scoped next week to see if the Barrett's has cleared up and get off the meds.

Also how have you been feeling since revision?
Rny scares me. But I think cancer scares me more

Ugh that is awful. How long had you been sleeved and dealing with the GERD before you developed Barrett's?
    This is my fear.
We're you able to control yours with medication? A PPI?
Did you just get heartburn when you ate or was it a constant thing?

  5. why do you have to bypass? Couldn't it be a hiatal hernia that can be repaired? I would ask that question before going through a process you don't really want.
I'm not sure if your talking to me...
But I haven't had a scope yet to see what is causing it. I will talk with my surgeon at my 6 month appointment and we will see what she wants to do.
I just have terrible anxiety and think waaayyyy into the future.
It's a bad habit. But I'm just trying to keep an open mind and prepare myself if this is something I need to do.

  6. Hi friends, I was sleeved almost 5 months ago and all was well until I tried to stop taking my pantoprozole around 8 weeks.

I have had hearburn everyday since if I do not take the medicine. I do not want to take an acid reducer long term. So I've been trying to ween off it but it's not working. It scares the crap out of me.

Just trying to see if anyone has had the same issue? Did it get better? Did you get a revision to rny?

I am so scared to get a revision but reflux is scary and no fun at all. It can cause long term issues and damage that scares me also.

I also know someone who was revised and is still having issues with reflux even after revision.

    Any encouragement is greatly appreciated.

  8. I’m preparing for a sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD next Thursday. That aside, I believe stats show that bypass and sleeve patients lose the same average % of excess weight but bypass patients lose it faster. I liked sleeve because it was less intrusive but it clearly didn’t work for me.
I would like to know how you do.
I am only 4.5 months out from my sleeve but I have been dealing with gerdzilla. Not fun. I thought I would be ok because I never had issues with reflux at all before surgery. I had never even had heartburn [emoji20] now I get it almost daily.

  9. That was my experience with the sleeve too. I never had heartburn before surgery, and it was in full force afterwards. My surgeon told me that if I still needed to take the reflux medication a year post op that I should make an appointment to see him. I was so stubborn and didn't want to have to get another surgery so I suffered through almost another year of really bad reflux. Finally 3 months ago I decided enough was enough. I had to go through some awful awful tests to give my surgeon enough info to recommend the revision surgery. I just hope after all this I can finally get some relief.
Hopefully you won't still have the reflux after a year out but if you do just be prepared to possibly have to go through another surgery. This might help you down the line if you're doubting getting the surgery, I have to keep reminding myself of the bigger picture here because if I don't get the surgery to fix this then that acid will more than likely do some serious damage to my esophagus (more than it already has).
Ugh it's so awful I really didn't want to get another surgery and thought I would be ok because I never had issues before.
It just scares me I didn't want rny. The process of moving everything around scares me.
But you only get one esophagus, and 2 kidneys which long term PPI can cause kidney problems.
I know a lot of people do just fine with rny but it just wasn't what I thought id possibly be doing. I hope and pray it goes away but right now the future looks bleak.

I look forward to seeing how you do!
    I hope everything goes perfectly.

  10. I’m also having a hard time with heartburn, I have to take Prilosec twice a day, but I was told it could be up to 6 months before it starts to subside and I notice if I forget to take it twice a day it doesn’t affect me so I’m hoping that’s a sign that it’s easing?!
Oh I definitely hope so 🤞
The past 2 weeks I have been trying to ween off my pantoprozole and have switched to taking pepcid (famotidine) everyday to combat hyperacidity. It is much less powerful and seems to be working so I am also hoping it gets better also.
Just scares me because GERD is serious and you don't want to mess with Barrett's esophagus, and revision is usually the only definite fix. [emoji20]
Everyone I have talked to says give it time but I am such a worry wart.
My surgeon didn't seem concerned if the PPI was controlling it but it just isn't something I want to take long term.

  11. Hi Everyone! Just wanted to check in an see how everyone is doing? things here have been fabulous, I can't believe that amount of energy I have, keeping up with my toddler is so easy now, accomplished my first flight since surgery I was not in need of a belt extender, the tray flipped down with room to spare, I was able to cross my legs and sat in the middle next to my husband and toddler and no problems... I am getting between 800- 1000 calories a day and between 50 and 60 grams of Protein a day... meeting Water goal, and continuing my Vitamins, I am not going to a gym currently but I do walk everyday, and use the elliptical in the basement. I have currently lost 86 lbs altogether since November, meal planning and structure has become easier... logging is key for me. I have noticed my body having a pattern of losing about 2lbs a week some weeks more some weeks 1lb.... I look at it as a win all around. I hope everyone is doing well!!
That sounds awesome you sound like you are doing amazing!
I am doing good except I can't seem to shake this heartburn and it's really got me concerned.
I never had an issue pre op and I get it daily now.
I am scared to be on a PPI long term.
Anyone else having issues with heartburn? [emoji20]

  12. Just want to follow this thread I have been experiencing awful heartburn since about 8 weeks post op. My doctor has me on 40mg of pantoprozole but I am terrified to take it long term. I have tried to ween off and switch to an h2 blocker (famotidine) it helps but I still have breakthrough symptoms.
I never had heartburn pre op so I never realized how awful it was and the dangers of GERD scares me to death. I also am scared to take a PPI long term because it's not good for you.
I am 4.5 months post sleeve and most have told me to wait that sometimes it gets better. Here's to hoping.
some days are better than others but I am just trying to educate myself if this is the path I need to take.

  13. Hi not scheduled but have been struggling with heartburn and have considered a revision just want to follow everyone and see how you all do!
I never had heartburn pre sleeve and it is so awful and frustrating
This was one of my fears getting surgery as I didn't want to have to revise to rny.
I am only 4.5 months out from my sleeve and everyone tells me to give it time but it's just scary. Just trying to be ok with it if this is the path I need to take!

  14. Greetings fellow November 2018 sleevers. I haven't checked in here in ages but today was my 3 month check up. So far, I'm down 25.6lbs since surgery which is PAINFULLY slow, but steady.
I try not to stress over the scale even though I'm jealous of other people's progress. That said, I can't afford clothes often enough to keep up with rapid weight loss, so it's really a silver lining.
My mood is great, my health is excellent, and in general I feel like I'm rocking this weight loss thing.
That is so great to hear! I am also a crazy slow loser so your not alone! Slow and steady! I was a lower BMI so I expected to be slower loosing.
I am only down 32 pounds since surgery (14 weeks)
    but I will take it!

  15. it is good to hear you are doing a bit better! and the reflux meds working is great, and I think reevaluating at 6 months is a great option. it is also good that you asked them about the pain, and good they seem to think it is normal, if it will help you write about it daily in your notes where you keep track on food intake pain today felt like and then you will have a reference for it to either show the dr or it won't be something you feel you have to write about any longer.
The burps... hands down one bite extra and I feel the same way for like an hour.... so ugh lol... I did this this weekend, had some chili it was sooo good, it was so cold out and this was just everything, got to about 3 3.5 ounces in (had portioned out 4 ounces) and I just didn't want it to end... I challenged an extra bite and my body quickly let me know not a good idea. I spent the next hour wishing I had listened to my body. The burping and discomfort not worth it.

I hope this week is better than last week! EVEN WHEN IT IS HARD KNOW YOU HAVE GOT THIS!!

Yeah reflux is weird and very frustrating. I definitely get that feeling of I eat too much but it also happens to me at night or early in the morning when I haven't even eaten anything. So I'm not sure. Last night I didn't have it though so here's to hoping it will get better 🤞
Yeah idk if the pain is normal it worries me sometimes but it's full and if it gets any worse I'll have it checked out. But of course I worry about everything.
Thank you for keeping in touch I am sad this page isn't as active I definitely like to see how everyone is doing and ask questions makes me feel not so alone!

  16. Does anyone else feel like it's gotten harder to eat than it was in the beginning?
I feel like I push so hard to get my calories and Water and am full all day.
My dietitian wants to see me at 1000 calories and that is very hard for me to hit most days!
I feel like I was more hungry and could eat more in the beginning. Maybe it's just a phase. 🤷. Very weird I always thought it would just steadily get easier but that doesn't seem like the case.

Hey there Dreaming just wanted to check in on you and see how you are doing? Hope you are feeling a bit better!!!

i am doing a bit better, i was able to meet with a therapist and had my 3 month post op appointment yesterday. They didn't seem concerned with the reflux and advised i continue to take my meds a few more months and we would evaluate at my 6 month appointment and try to ween off if i was doing ok. I haven't had any heartburn since ive been on them but when i go to sleep i often feel like i want to burp stuff up :(

I have a dull pain in my abdomen sometimes that has me kind of concerned but they didn't seem worried about that either...

So fingers crossed it all gets better :(

  18. I had RNY. I had symptoms pretty much as soon as I got home from the hospital. Everything I ate or drank BURNED LIKE FIRE, even Water. Two or three weeks later, after they realized it wasn't just "sensitivity", they did an endoscopy and found the ulcer. I was on a liquid medicine called Carafate for two months, four times a day, and Pepcid and Prilosec. It recently healed on its own. The hernia, I had no symptoms, but they saw it when I had to have my gallbladder removed on 1/5. I started having serioussss gallbladder symptoms 1.5 months out from surgery. Extreme nausea and dry-heaving. They didn't realize it was my gallbladder for about 3 weeks after I had symptoms begin. They sewed the hernia while doing the gallbladder.
Oh my goodness you poor thing!
I hope all is well now [emoji171]
I'm sorry I must have missed the rny info!
That has to be hard trying to heal from surgery and then having all those things go wrong in top of it!
Well at least you killed 2 birds with 1 stone on the hernia and gallbladder!

  19. I had my surgery 11/1 and developed an ulcer, had to have my gallbladder out, and developed a hernia and IT IS STILL WORTH IT. I can't imagine any complication that would not be worth dealing with in order to lose this weight. PS: I am all healed up now. They will test you in the OR for leaks; my surgeon tested my pouch 3 times. So extremely rare to have a leak, and it is fixable. There's pretty much nothing they can't fix. There was a few moments where I felt like it was "unfair" these things happened to me and I was exasperated at having to deal with it... but losing the weight conquers all.
How did you find out you had an ulcer after your sleeve? What symptoms we're you having?
Just our of curiosity. Did you have to get surgery again to fix the hernia and ulcer?
How far out were you when these things showed up?

  20. Many hugs, I know I can't stop you from stressing about everything but I really wanted to start by pointing out your strength... you see it is not easy to say hey I am not feeling right or even put it into words our fears or anxiousness... you are already doing good job, you are recognizing you don't feel right and you sound like you are taking the steps to figure it out, so I will say that is true strength and you will probably do great, maybe your dr. will be able to recommend treatments without meds if that is what will work for you.
I will also say it is hard to know for sure everything is ok in this process right... we had a surgery that was big and that is having an immediate effect, we know it happened but can't see it in a lot of ways so healing a cut you can see it getting better for the most part with this we can't see our pouches or stomachs as they heal, and it is easy when we have reflux or we throw up or have a pain or stitch to think the worst. I really get it, when I was having issues with #2... I had read a horrible case scenario and was convinced it was going to happen to me too... (obs. my anxiety at the time was higher before med adjustment for me). even though it is hard you are talking about it, and going to a dr. and having a discussion is really a great idea, I think you will find a lot of people on these boards also have similar feelings as you.
You can also bring all of this up to your surgeon as well, about the reflux concerns and see if an endoscopy is warranted to make sure there isn't anything else going on.

I have scheduled to meet with a counselor and I will definitely be asking about the reflux cause it has me stressed.
It definitely isn't easy and the mental health side of this is by far the hardest. I was so nervous for the surgery it's self and that was the easy part.
I just don't want reflux to become a major issue.
I'm trying to stay positive and I really hope talking with someone will help. My husband seems frustrated with me which is making me really sad.
I don't like feeling like this but I can't help it. Idk how to fix it.
Ugh the endoscopy was so expensive I hope I don't need another one. But we will see.

Dreaming- I am so sorry you are struggling, I have anxiety, but had it before, ( I have a child with a lot of needs and often in the hospital if I am completely honest) My dr. did have me come in after the procedure and did increase my meds... my anxiety had increased. I think it is good to talk to your dr. they can listen and help you in the right direction. This process is a BIG process in such a short time there are so many changes and it is easy to get lost. It sounds like you have a good husband who supports you and wants the best for you. hang in there!

This is awful, i just feel sad and not like myself its weird.

I am on constant fear and worry this past week or so. Its not good and i am not sure what to do. I have always been afraid of taking meds for anxiety because i dont want to become dependent on them but it is getting bad. I have always had health anxiety and i knew it would be a struggle after surgery, but id hoped id be ok. :(

I am always concerned something is wrong with me and this reflux has me terrified i get stuck in these swirling thoughts and its consuming me. I was very nervous about reflux pre op and now i feel like my fears are coming true and its triggering me. It has been better with meds but i cant stop stressing about it.

I was given meds for 3 months, and my dr told me normal to have to take them until 6 months or longer like permanent, I will say I have been really lucky, Knock on wood, haven't taken mine for awhile now and no issues, but if you are having an issue I would say reach out and get that script again.

ugh this has me so stressed out i never had heartburn before surgery.

i hope this gets better cause it has me feeling very discouraged and second guessing my choice :(
