    Gas pains after surgery

Walking was the only thing that eliminated my gas pains. HW: 360 SW: 343 CW: 326 GW: 180 RNY 4/16/18
  2. My pre-op liquid diet was 14 days of 5 HMR shakes and clear liquids only. My calories per day were 700-800. I lost 17 pounds in those 2 weeks. The preop diet really helped me mentally prepare and start thinking about food differently. HW: 360 SW: 343 CW: 326 GW: 180 RNY 4/16/18

    Marijuana

I was still having significant pain and discomfort 9 days post-op. No position was comfortable. Changing positions was awful. My anxiety was through the roof. My clonazepam wasn’t much help. I bought CBD oil and have now been taking it three times daily for 4 days. I truly feel less anxious and think it’s very possible it has helped ease my discomfort. 4. What I found so interesting after a few days into the liquid diet was since I couldn’t spend time eating or preparing meals I had so much more time, energy, and motivation for other things. This has continued post-op and I am so thankful. I almost feel set free from the bonds of food. Everyday I had to tell myself “Food is for the purpose of providing nutrition for health and survival.” Society has placed food at the center of every occasion imaginable, but we’ve gotta remember it really just has one purpose - fuel our body to survive. It’s a very mentally challenging thing to have WLS. Keep chatting with folks on here. Keep following your instructions and look forward to great changes! HW: 360 SW: 343 CW: 329 GW: 180 RNY 4/16/18
  5. It isn’t about beauty for me either. I was beginning to be limited on what I could do with my family. I couldn’t go to a concert or sports game due to the seats that were too small for me. Every time I sat down in a chair at a restaurant I wondered if it would break as I was at 360 pounds. I have no comorbidities, and with this WLS, I’m hoping to keep it that way! I want to be healthy and be a good example for my kids. I understand, girl! Don’t feel bad about looking in the fridge or the pantry. I did it too. One night I actually LICKED A PEPPERONI and tossed it in the trash. It was so silly and we all just laughed. Good talkin to ya. Hang in there! HW: 360 SW: 343 CW: 329 GW: 180 RNY 4/16/18
  6. It looks like everyone has very well covered the mental aspect of it and how important it is to start and stay committed. I know you can do this. It isn’t easy at first. I cried on day 10. Ugly cry. Sobbing. But I made it 14 days. You mentioned that you don’t like drinking water. There are so many sugar free low cal/no cal drinks out there. Propel (several flavors), flavored Nestle water, Diet decaffeinated tea, diet lemonade, zero cal vitamin water (my fav is called vitamin zero xxx), crystal light, etc. Honestly, if you drink 64oz of liquid a day outside of your shakes, there’s not much room for legit hunger pains. You will have mental hunger. My family didn’t eat around me for about the first week. We scheduled meal times that way, which seemed to help. This is a HUGE mental reset that will help you post op. It truly is mind over matter. I also told myself during the preop diet that for me personally I’ve gone through much more difficult things in my life than a liquid diet. You’ve got this! Birth Control

Of course everyone is different, but I had horrible experiences with oral contraceptives and the depo shot. I gained 40 pounds on the depo shot (and this was before I was obese). I had intense mood swings with all oral contraceptives I tried. And then ultimately I got pregnant TWICE on oral contraceptives using them faithfully and exactly as directed. 9. I had a general orientation in early January. My first appt with the surgeon was 1/23/18. I had to have several preop tests, meetings with a dietician, and a neuropsychological eval. Insurance approval for me was almost 3 weeks after all results were back and we chose which surgery I would have. I was then required to do a 2 week HMR/clear liquid diet. I had surgery on 4/16/18 but could have done it at least 3 weeks earlier but my surgeon was booked and I wasn’t able to schedule all of my testing immediately due to work. I think things moved really fast in my situation. It can widely vary. HW: 360 CW: 330 RNY 4/16/18

    Gas pains after surgery

walk walk walk. You will lose the gas. The bloated feeling goes down and you will be able to drink more. Just keep walking and drinking and everything will fall into place. HW: 360 CW: 330 RNY 4/16/18

    Birth Control

I had an IUD (the Mirena) for almost five years, which is how long they are supposed to be safe and effective. At that point mine was lodged in my uterus. It couldn’t be removed in the office and I had to have it removed surgically. HOWEVER, with all that said, I love it. I had another one inserted. With each time, I spotted a bit here and there and then don’t have periods at all. It has been wonderful not worrying about remembering to take a contraceptive or plan my life around when I might be bleeding. It was overall a good choice for me. HW: 360 CW: 330 RNY 4/16/18

    Lower Abdominal Pain

I don’t have gas pain anymore, but I’m also a little farther out and I’ve increased my walking. Truly the ONLY thing that will get rid of gas pain is walking. It was a weird sensation for me at first, because never in my life had I had gas pain. But when I increased my walking, girl that pain was relieved. I had to walk quite a bit for several days in a row, but it’s gone now. I do still wake up every night in pain. I will admit it’s more of a aggravating discomfort. I’m not writhing in pain or crying. But I’m uncomfortable and hurting enough to where I have to take a little pain medicine to sleep the next few hours. For me, this is expected and ok. It has gotten better every day though. I’m glad I could help relieve you a little. I’ve also gotten some good advice and encouragement from people on here as well. I’m thankful for this community! Don’t be so hard on yourself. It gets better!

    Lower Abdominal Pain

Sprinkles, I had intense gas pain post op days 7-11 that were out of this world. I have woken up in pain every single night since surgery. I’m 16 days out gastric bypass and cholecystectomy now. I feel that my pain is expected. I walk every day, and on those tough days I wasn’t walking much at all. For ME, increasing my walking helped my gas pain. Shoulder rubs helped as well. I completely understand your frustration. I’m not healing as fast as I wish I would be, and I don’t even have any comorbidities. Now my pain is just muscle soreness. You have to think about how while this was a laparoscopic procedure, there were still several instruments moving and pushing and pulling and pinching like crazy for hours. It’s a major operation. Some people love to say “oh i bounced back and didn’t take pain medications and I’m fine.” That’s not true for everyone. Reaching out to your doc is definitely good. But also being comfortable with the fact that your body needs time to heal is very important. Take the time. Walk and drink. You will feel better.

    stall in weight loss

I will be one week post-op gastric bypass and cholecystectomy tomorrow. I have lost one pound. I choose to not get upset because I KNOW it will come off. I’m following my instructions. My body is healing. Stalls are temporary. Don’t get discouraged.

    Gall Bladder

Developing gallstones after rapid weight loss is common. I was having some intense cramping that wrapped around my ribs for a few months. I wrote it off to a muscle spasm due to anxiety. Part of my pre-op testing was an ultrasound of the liver and gallbladder. My gallbladder was full of stones. My surgeon removed it when he did my bypass almost one week ago. I do know a couple dozen people who have had to have theirs removed post-op due to developing gallstones.
  16. This comment really helped me. I will be one week post-op tomorrow. I have lost one pound post-op. I can’t let myself get discouraged. I know I’m following my instructions. And I know that the most important thing is that my body heals. I put my body through a lot! The weight loss will come. The healing has to be the focus right now.

    Recovery Time

Tomorrow will be one week since my gastric bypass and cholecystectomy. I was told pre-op that I could return to work in one week. I quickly realized after surgery, as did my family and surgeon that it was unrealistic. I am still unable to get from a standing position unassisted. After experiencing such pain that continues today, I will gladly take the 2 1/2 weeks that is now recommended. I will be happy to take more if that’s what I need. You would be surprised how many movements and positions will be difficult after surgery. Totally worth it, but recovery has been harder than I expected. I thought my expectations were realistic bc I’ve been an RN for 11 years, but I was wrong. You and your surgeon can decide what is best for you. I say go back a few days “late” rather than a few days early and suffer or screw up your healing.
