    Any regrets with RNY?

I felt the same way after surgery and from my research it is a very common feeling post op. Kind of the “can’t turn back its for life and trying to reverse a life time of eating habits” emotion is a very common post here. I can tell you that for the VAST majority things work fine and in a couple short months you will feel totally different about the surgery. I was totally worried about the getting older thing as well and not sure how old you are, but IMO there are 20+ years of older people who will get there before me and figure it out.

I need to talk about constipation post op

Protein is definitely a big part of it.

    Cheated a little...

you will be fine but don't keep at it - remember your insides are "wet" and need more time to heal then your skin. Also, if you don't chew that chicken...well it sucks!

I need to talk about constipation post op

I use benefiber with every protein shake I mix up in the morning and switch up with some mirrolax if things need a little extra kick. I bought some of the glycerin because it got bad in the beginning but never used them, and I could have named some of my bm's... All that protein will block you up like a cornered racoon.

    Any regrets with RNY?

I'm 125 days post-op today and hit 60 pounds lost since surgery, 70 since I started. When I was researching, I noticed a trend of quite a few people regretting either surgery the first 1-2 months and I went through he same thing. I think it is a combination of hormone imbalance from losing the weight and the totality of surgery finally sinking in. I went with the bypass because that is the only surgery my insurance would cover. Some days I start to feel a little regret and miss some of my past life, but I just keep reminding myself of the feelings and emotions I had to start this journey and move on. Think of surgery as a reset on life and your health. You will re-learn how and what to eat and pay for it if you make a mistake - this negative reinforcement can be a strong motivator! My neighbor had gastric bypass 8-9 years ago and went from 340 to 160 and he is now 60 years old, Saturday night went out with some friends and ate more food in one meal then I currently eat in 5 days, so it's not like life is changed forever, just the immediate short term. With either surgery it IS very possible to eat your way back out of it, but why would you want to go through all this and not be successful? If so, then there are other issues at hand.
  6. Anyone else get a “ice cream headache” from drinking small amounts cold water quickly? I know I used to chug water down but seems I’m know sensitive to it even more! Seems like the only time I had them before was quickly drinking a smoothie too quickly but never with ice water!

    Coffee?

I went decaf about six months preop and now 112 days post op, I drink 1-2 coups of half caff. I would recommend trying different brands of decaf coffee. As for how long, it is up to your surgeon and generally dictated by your medical record but seems every surgeon is different. My pre-op liquid diet was three days and some surgeons request three weeks so each is very different.

    Banded gastric bypass

Soreness is generally different for everyone. Are the areas around the incisions red and tender? If so then you should call your doctors office to be checked for an infection, although rare, can happen. After about a 5-7 days mine were no longer sore and then a few days later started to itch as they scabbed over and started to heal. Also, the soreness could greatly depend on how big the incisions are in your skin - the larger the cut, the longer it will take to heal.

    When NOTHING sounds good

Funny, about the same time, I didn't really want to eat but I did want to cook, especially on my big green egg, so I would cook stuff eat one or two bites and that was it. As others have said take advantage of the "honeymoon" stage!

    Gallbladder Sludge

Curious, for those that replied they had their gallblader out post WLS, do you remember if you took Ursodiol post op? @scoutcr - I get that same pain under my lower left ribs after eating. Please explain more about how it progressed.

what's the worse things about bypass

I had pretty bad GERD pre-op and was up to 100 mg of Omeprazole and now 112 days post op take only 20 mg 2x daily of Famotidine and have yet to experience GERD. I don't eat spaghetti and drink a bottle of red wine before bed either!.... but so far no GERD, no problem sleeping on either side, stomach or ONE PILLOW!

Can we talk about food aversion

it comes and goes for me. I will get all psyched up for a food, have two bites and feel sick to my stomach. Eating something salty seems to make it go away, so two triscuits is my quick reset.

    No restriction

I feel very much the same way now. I did have issues with restrictions in the beginning and had the foamies a couple of times, once at work even. Now I feel like I can eat anything but I do notice a pain in my left side sometimes when i'm getting full - I know darn well I could eat through that pain, and have, but the fear of failing after having major surgery gives me enough will power to put the fork down...finally. Last month I did eat two slices of dijorno pep pizza and had zero issue, after I ate my P3 protein pack for dinner. The next morning that cold pizza looked good and after three bites it hit me and took 20 minutes for the pain to go away. My neighbor is 8 years out on his RNY and he has to remember to eat - not me, I'm still thinking about food all the time. I think everyone has a different signal, recently I've started hiccuping when full, then I found a thread here about people doing the same thing so maybe you need to listen more for your body telling you to stop? I'm really hoping that the hunger goes away because if it doesn't the only tool i'm left with is malnutrition.

    chewable vitamins

I tried searching the site but couldn't get a good answer. I am looking for recommendations on chewable vitamins with iron. I have been taking the Celebrate Multivitamin Complete with 36mg Iron Chewable but I can't get past the taste post op. I asked my NUT and he recommended Centrum chewables with 18 mg of iron. I found some and after I got home and opened them I realized that right above the iron it lists calcium. below is a link to the ingredients. http://labeling.pfizer.com/ShowLabeling.aspx?id=2559 During all my pre-op classes and online here, it is ingrained that iron and calcium must be taken separtely. When I questioned my NUT his response was "Calcium in the Multi Vitamins is only minimal - and it will not much affect the iron and the calcium will dissolve quicker than iron once in the stomach". Anyone have any thoughts on this and/or recommendations for vitamins if the Centrum is off the list? I actually don't mind the taste but clearly they don't have near the amount of nutrients as the Celebrate vitamins.

what's the worse things about bypass

111 days out from my bypass. Other then scars I really don’t feel that different physically. The first 6-8 weeks were rough - regret, slimmies, constipation, lack of fluids, learning what I can and can’t eat, etc. I’m down 52 lbs since surgery and I still get hungry but can not eat as much and couple that with a desire to succeed I learned portion control habits. I haven’t come across anything I can’t eat but quantity is definitely the issue. I like being thinner but I have to keep reminding myself why I did it and it’s a permanent life time change. I went out to dinner with my wife tonight and really missed having a glass of wine, in fact not drinking with my meal is one of the hardest things to deal with it.

Thank you. Not sure how I missed that one.
  22. 14 days liquid post op but was told by day ten I could have mashed taters if I was starving. Had one spoonful and it was delightful. Puréed for another two weeks after that but each surgery and surgeon has their own guidelines they come up with.

Gastric or Sleeve which is better?

Forgot to add that I had a hiatal hernia as well. My gastro doc told me that fixing it was a 50/50 on fixing the gerd issue.

    Back to life hopefully!!!

I am 73 days out and I ate sushi last night for my wife's birthday. I ate a total of four pieces, half a roll where I used to eat two entire rolls by myself. In 8-16 months I am sure I could eat an entire roll *if I wanted* but right now my desire to succeed out weighs my desire to eat and after getting the foamies a few times, I don't want that to happen in public so I am very careful. It is a learning experience and you need to take it slow and let your body heal. Internal (wet) incisions take longer to heal then outside skin and even longer for the scar tissue to reduce.
