domi got a reaction from Kaswhy in Joint pain after vsg
I had a lot of joint pain after I started losing weight. I think as you lose weight your body begins to move around and change so things hurt. I kept walking every day and started swimming and I now no longer have pain. I also went and had a few massages. I think I just needed to make my self stronger to alleviate the pain.

I just keep eating right and try to get about 30 minutes of exercise in 5 days a week. There wasn't a moment where I stopped losing and started maintaining. It's all about a new way to eat and live my life.

WOW! I can't believe it's been 3 years since my Gastric Sleeve surgery! It feels like I had it yesterday.
I started out at 470 and I've pretty much maintained at 215 pounds for the bulk of this year. If anyone is on the fence about having this surgery, let me tell you, it's life changing.
I am so happy I did it. Not only is my health great, I've gotten very fit and am more active now than I have been in years.

You are starving all day, cuz you are on a slow drip of sugar (aka cranberry juice). It keeps your insulin elevated and keeps you starving. Which do you want worse? To be thin without constant hunger? Or to not be able to comply with your plan and continue to see your weight go up. It's a very simple option.

google or youtube "counter top push ups"
they are a great way to start and you can do them anytime your in your kitchen
also look for office workouts to see ways to get in more exercise using your chair.
the key is to keep doing it everyday even if you dont see a difference right away.
i did the push ups every time i warmed my coffee in the microwave and i drink a lot of coffee so it adds up

Walk or move whenever you can. You are worth it. Stand up at your desk. Take the longer route to the restroom. I find if I put myself first even during the frantic, busy times, I get more done and I am less prone to stress eating. I also make sure I plan my food. If I packed my food, I'm less likely to eat other stress foods. Good luck. You are worth taking care of.

I feel for you. But, in my opinion, it's not worth it. Surgery is an extreme measure. Most of us took this step not to simply lose weight but to improve our health. We accepted the risks associated with the surgery because they weren't as bad as what we were facing. With your GERD, even well-controlled, you're risking a major change to the quality of your life. I don't know any GOOD surgeon who would do a sleeve on someone who has GERD already knowing how bad it can get post-surgery.
I hope that you came here for all opinions, not just validation. Please understand that those of us who are saying it's not worth it are not trying to discourage you or have forgotten our struggles when we were at a lower BMI. We just want you to be well informed and think about the long-term.
Good luck with whatever you decide! We're here to support.

What helped me the most with losing weight was the psychologist and personal nutritionist. Surgery helped, but a year later, it is still the psychological and nutrition that I need to continue working on. The sleeve has helped me by reducing what I can eat, but it is not the solution. It is a valuable tool and part of the whole solution.

If I was that close, I would not have done the surgery. I think what really helped me start losing was a combination of efforts. I was doing weight watchers, along with using the app and doing okay, but slow. To get weight loss surgery, I had to see a nutritionist, psychologist and a trainer. These were life changing. I saw the nutritionist for 4 months, she taught me more about the combination of foods (more than WW did). The trainer helped me learn to move correctly and motivated me to move more without causing more pain. The psychologist helped me realize I mattered. I had put myself so far back on my to-do list that I stopped caring for myself. With this combination of help, I gained a total support system and learned a new way to eat. I no longer was dieting. This was key to me. Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

I'm sorry you are struggling. It sounds like you are pretty in touch with where everything is coming from...so I only want to address this:
There are GREAT benefits to losing weight beyond the number on the scale. It WILL help physically (if not now, then definitely in the future--cuz realistically MO people do not die "perfectly healthy but MO". They die cuz of complications from MO in most cases) and it DOES help emotionally as well as spiritually. But the part I will address cuz I experienced it is the reduction (dramatic) in pain level from my weight of 287 and 325lbs compared to my pain level at 137lbs, right this minute.
At 287 and 325lbs I was basically bed ridden. I had so much pain I could not stand for 10 minutes, could not walk for 5 minutes, had to change positions every 30 minutes to an hour. Couldn't sleep longer than an hour or two cuz of waking from pain. Couldn't clean myself (poopin) or shower without sitting down on a shower chair. I couldn't exercise or travel. I was a mass of degenerative disc and joint disease and so much more I won't bore you with. I got cortisone injections into my back and hips every 6-9 months and lived on daily pain meds (opiods) and drank to control the extra pain. I was a terrible hot mess. Every morning I woke in a 5-7 pain level and by evening every day I was at minimum an 8 1/2-10. I cried from the pain most days.
Today at 137lbs I ran this morning for 35minutes strait without stopping at 3.5mph pace (slow but moving). It's a personal best. I wake in a 2-4 pain level and it stays pretty consistent. Some days it goes up to a 5, but that isn't every day. I sleep 3-6 hours at a stretch. I exercise every day (either walking, jogging, or core strengthening exercises). I am active, care for myself, the house, cook, and sleep. I don't sit down to shower. My balance is improving...I feel like I'm getting my life back.
I don't drink for pain (and rarely drink now). I don't take any pain meds at all. Oh and I no longer cry daily from pain.
I have such a great RD. She is part of my care team. I also have several psychs who are helping me. I just wish anyone who needed help could get the kind of help I've had cuz it's been phenomenal and a blessing.

I’m sorry that you are frustrated. No one can walk in your shoes and fully understand how you are feeling. Even if you don’t get useful feedback. Its still good to vent what your experiencing.
I am five years out. I wish I could say surgery takes away old behaviors, addictive patterns and mental battles with weight loss. For me obesity is a lifelong issue I work on.
If you are cycling between being too strict (causing diet burn out) compulsive eating, eating in secret. Make taking care of your head space a priority. How you do that is your choice. Self-help books, counseling, or therapist that specialize with eating issues.
There are many people here that have mobility issues that cannot exercise. You are not alone in your situation. If your weight is stalled out due to medical reasons, I would get a medical professional’s advice. Call your team or hire a dietician that has your medical history.
Give yourself credit for all the weight you have lost.

I always tell my surgical patients I'd be worried if you weren't nervous! This is a major surgery after all. Odds are you'll be totally fine, but it is scary being that vulnerable.
I, like many others, overpacked for my hospital stay. I used my own toothpaste and toothbrush, deodorant, hairbrush, chapstick, face moisturizer, phone charger, and pillow. Everything else I brought with me sat unused in my bag. I just wore home the same clothes I wore in.
Many people will suggest you bring your own socks or house slippers for walking in. As an operating room nurse I DO NOT recommend that. Surgeons and PAs walk out of the OR department and up to the floors dragging particles of blood and guts with them. Wear the crummy socks they give you then toss them in the trash when youre discharged.

but don't understand (the week when I was at 1000/day, I lost 2.5 lbs??
1000 calories is still your weight loss calories. 2.5 loss is because your body needs more calories. See article below.
    https://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20140529/fast-weight-loss-may-mean-muscle-loss
    What are your fat percentages?
I consume enough calories to build muscle mass. my body fat percentage is in the 19-24 zone. I'm athletic in the fit/lean zone.
do you put any importance on this statistic to yourselves, personally?
I put importance on my goal of healthy. I don’t pay attention to my body fat percentage.
Many of us lose muscle with rapid weight loss. There is a difference between a low body fat percentage with burnt muscle and with muscle mass. My personal experience after goal, I continued to exercise and not consume enough calories. The result was I burnt muscle and dropped to the 120’s. (not a healthy look for me)

I agree with others that since you're in the early weeks, give it time. A lot of folks feel pretty raw the first few weeks after surgery and begin to really love their decision later.
But, I've also had several complications (pretty rare) and at 8 months out still regret the surgery. I've had to start seeing a therapist (she specializes in weight issues, including bariatric surgery) because even though I'm not sure I'll ever feel good about my decision, it is not good for my mind to feel this bad about it all the time. It is helping. It isn't too late to see a therapist to talk through this. I'm working on a lot of reframing, and it is slowly helping. My WLS nurse keeps telling me that how I feel is not my life - and she's right. I feel infinitely better now than I did when the complications first showed up. Good luck.
