    Missing Food

Angiemomma, I do that. I always looked at a lot of food online, yelp, and watched cooking videos on youtube and shows on TV, but I'm doing it even more lately. It's comforting to me for some reason, even though I'm finishing up the second and final week of my liquid only pre-op diet.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

If I had to choose between the two myself, I'd go with the bypass. Far less chance of reflux, better remission of morbidities like diabetes, and possibly better long-term weight loss.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but in my humble opinion, if you are eating such that you need a diary or an app like myfitnesspal to calculate your daily calories/fat/carbs, you are eating too much. During the pre-op diet phase, I kept it simple - dinner would be lean protein and vegetables. Breakfast and Lunch usually protein shakes. That's it. Every day. No need to count calories or use an app. Does it suck? Sort of, but it's only 6 months and keep your eye on the prize. I'm down 50 pounds since January. 41 pounds down prior to the liquid pre-op diet. Actually, compared to the 2-week liquid pre-op diet I'm on now (surgery the 13th!) I'd give anything to have that lean chicken or fish and brussel sprouts right now.

Clear liquid diet day before surgery

    Isn't gatorade high in sugars?
  5. Unfortunately any dessert other than sugar-free jello and popsicles is going to be carb heavy. Also, in low-fat versions of higher-fat foods, you are generally trading fat for carbs, sadly. Just look at salad dressings, like low fat/fat free ranch or italian.
  6. I agree with SillyKitty with the back-to-basics liquid diet for a few weeks. Also, if you're not losing with 1,200 calories, you're going to have to go lower. If it were me, I'd try 800 calories a day - and make sure you're honest with yourself about those calorie counts.
  7. So true. No matter what, you can't violate the laws of thermodynamics. If calories in is less than calories used, she'll lose weight.

    Protein shakes

I like Premier Protein 'cookies n' cream' and 'caramel' and 'bananas & cream'. I also like the Advant Edge chocolate (chocolate fudge or something?) and the coffee one (tastes just like those little bottles of starbuck's frappuccinos.) Aside from the PP bananas/cream, I haven't like most "fruity" flavors I've come across in protein shakes so I'd advise most to stay away. Muscle Milk is gross.

    Second Time This Happened

How could 3 oz of unseasoned chicken and some steamed vegetables be "too much," pre-op?
  10. Nice in theory but unsustainable in practice. If everybody followed that advice, we'd run out of surgeons. It's like everyone else should be your guinea pig...

    August surgery ppl

Hi! liquid-only Pre-Op diet royally sucks. I was already on it, but then my surgery was rescheduled, so I got a weeks reprieve but had to restart again. One week down, one week to go, but it feels like I haven't had a bite to eat in a year. I'll persevere though! I have to stay under 10g of fat and under 30g of carbs. I'm living off 3 protein shakes a day and sugar free jello/popsicles. If you can actually eat real food on your diet, I enjoy you.

    August surgery ppl

Hi! Still on hopefully for 8/13. I'm getting the duodenal switch surgery. Don't have an arrival time yet - I'm supposed to call the hospital after 6pm on Friday to find that out. I'm sure it'll probably be at the crack of dawn like yours!

    Catheter duting surgery

I hope I get one. I'm getting a DS so that should take 4+ hours. It would be nice when I wake up to not have to get up to go to the bathroom.

    August surgery ppl

Cool! Unfortunately it's still two whole weeks away! It's going to be a long couple of weeks
  15. Today I was notified that my insurance approved the surgery! Took a solid business week for submission to approval. August 13th for the DS!

    August surgery ppl

Hi! I was just notified today that my insurance approved the surgery! Surgery date is August 13th. Pretty exciting! You nervous?
  17. Today I got notified of insurance approval for the DS! So it took a business week.
  18. Had my first appointment on January 15. My final supervised appt. was July 11, and my paperwork was submitted for insurance approval on July 20th apparently. Waiting now for approval. Surgery is tentatively scheduled for August 13th. Insurance is United Healthcare.
  19. 1. Looks 2. Mobility 3. and down, no particular order.

    UHC-Optum Approval

You're paying her to provide supervised nutrition counseling not to endorse your decision to have bariatric surgery. I'm not sure why it matters whether she's for or against it.
  21. I just postponed my surgery by 3 weeks switching my decision from RNY to DS. I feel the DS will help me maintain the weight loss, where many RNYers battle regain after a few to several years. Since you're revisioning, you may find weight loss more difficult than someone who is getting a new fresh surgery - so you may want to opt for the more powerful bariatric procedure. If it were me, I'd weight and get the superior surgery (for you). Your surgeon told you he feels the DS is better for you - I'd go with his professional recommendation.
  22. I think there is some confusion about your two week diet. It makes sense that for the two-weeks prior to your surgery, you would be put on a liver-shrinking, ketosis-inducing low carb/low fat/low sugar diet. A day prior to surgery, it makes sense that you would only be allowed 'clear' liquids in order to ensure there is no residues in your GI-tract. It doesn't make sense that you'd be on clear liquids for the full two weeks.

    First step in the process

Can't the surgeon's office help you coordinate all that?
  24. I'm a bit concerned about this myself. I was told at the beginning (in January) that I really needed to lose 10% of my excess body weight during the six-month supervised diet - which was about 10-15 pounds. I ended up losing 40 pounds thus far - which means I started the pre-op diet, that I'm on now, at 40.1 bmi. The pre-op liquid diet will drop me below 40, and there isn't anything I can do about it. My next surgeon's office appt. is tomorrow, and if they try to weigh me, I'm going to have to have a conversation with them.

Need help plz. Beginning 6 math diet

I did lean meat (chicken or fish) and vegetables, mainly broccoli and brussel sprouts in my case. I would give myself a few mild cheat days, but I stuck to the diet hard on weeks I had to go weigh in with the surgeon or nutritionist. You *do not* want to show weight gain during those twice/month weigh-ins. I lost about 35 pounds without too much difficulty. Now I'm on the pre-op liquid diet. That really sucks.
