cbf reacted to Screwballski in Neck/facelift, Anyone?
Now that I'm so far removed from the immediate inconveniences of plastic surgery and sleeplessness, it was entirely worth it! Here's a photo from about 9 weeks out. I'm still healing everywhere but no more bruising or open wounds. And I'm sleeping like a rock! Fifty-four is right around the corner. I weighed in today at 136 pounds and I feel fantastic! I feel like I look my age but, as folks say, do finally look "good for my age".

omg! This is ridiculous. I mean I get we have a drug epidemic in this country but for goodness sakes you just get out of surgery you need pain management and rest. Then is not the time to be stingy and keep people in pain for the sake of addiction. I get not sending people home with the stuff but your in a hospital.

cbf reacted to Creekimp13 in Perspectives on Losing Fast & Slow
I really didn't expect my weight loss to go so fast.
I also did not expect to be this successful.
I figured I'd be one of the very typical middle of the road average sleeve patients who lose 65% of their excess weight. I figured I'd stall out at 205...and that sounded great to me. 205 is a hell of a lot healthier than 270!
Six months out, and I'm losing slow and steady. Made it into the 170's. Seems crazy to me, and really wonderful.
I'd rather go slower and give my skin time to catch up. No hurry here at all.

Sometimes I hate to comment because I feel like there are folks out there who just want to say, “STFU!” But, I know my road is going to be long. I have relatively little to lose but it feels like a mountain to climb for me. When I read how quickly others are losing, I truly have to remind myself their journey is not mine and many would likely rather be in my shoes. It doesn’t make my journey any easier. That said, I do appreciate everyone here. You are kind and compassionate. And, you understand that three weeks post op, sitting on only 12lbs lost is just as frustrating for me at 168lbs as a 20 pound loss would be for someone who started out substantially higher in weight on sleeve day.

Not losing as quickly as I like but I am unable to go back to the gym until the end of June due to hiatal hernia repair. Also I turn 70 next month lol which might be part of it! But I am very happy as I feel so much better and have dropped 2 sizes!

I’m also stalled and haven’t lost for two weeks. The NUT said I needed to up my calorie intake to over 700 calories a day. It is a struggle and I guess in my mind I thought the weight would miraculously drop off every day, but it stops while our bodies regroup. You are definitely not alone!

Thank you so much I have been diabetic for over 15 years just short of using insulin as well I guess I will have to be more patient At least you’ve given me hope!
Thanks!

cbf reacted to rak4469 in Diabetics are your readings still high post sleeve
I was steered to have rny being a diabetic for the malabsorption reason..my numbers were all over the place the first 2 weeks,I was very frustrated, they got better, now im almost not a diabetic! I had surgery in November im down 104 lbs ,so keep at it..things will be better

cbf reacted to RickM in Has anyone else had to add insulin 4 weeks after sleeve? So depressed.
A couple of basic points about diabetes and WLS that I have learned over the years.
1 - the VSG and RNY are, on average, about 85% effective in driving T2 diabetes into remission, (some practices will show somewhat better or poorer results with one procedure or the other, but the overall average is in that ballpark) so there will be an unlucky 15% or so that will still struggle with it. The DS does a better job overall, with remission rates in the 98-99% range, but it is not as widely performed.
That is the bad news; the better news is that
2 - the longer one has been diagnosed and under treatment for diabetes, the longer it often takes after WLS for remission to occur. Again, a generalization, as some will leave the hospital free of meds and insulin, but others will lag but catch up. My wife had been diabetic for about 20 years and just short of being on insulin, and it took her the better part of a year to be off all of the meds for it, and that was with the stronger DS on her side.
Patience is a virtue in this case; give it time and work with your docs on it, and it should work out for you - the odds are still on your side.

I’m feeling down. It’s been 3 1/2 weeks since my sleeve and I thought my diabetes would be resolved. Instead my Dr wants to start insulin to “shock” my pancreas because my glucose is going up again. On top of that I’ve stalled after losing 13 lbs. Did I make a mistake? I was never on insulin before.

cbf reacted to Taoz in Pain...later
As far as other pain medication options, I take paracetemol 500mg and codeine 30mg when I get severe headaches and menstrual cramping, which I now need my doctors prescription for (used to be over-the-counter for lower dose codeine tablets in Australia). Given that we can't take ibuprofen post surgery I'm glad that paracetemol/codeine is still ok (according to my surgeons instructions).
I hope the incision pain goes away soon for you!

cbf got a reaction from NativeTexan in Almost 60 and getting sleeve on 4/24/18
Hi I’m 69 and was sleeved April 12th with hiatal and umbilical hernia repairs. On clear liquid diet and have lost 6 lbs so far. I have dieted for years with temporary success. My diabetes was not under control despite taking 3 different pills and an injection. My health was getting worse and I wanted to be able to keep up with my 5 little grandchildren.
I was terrified but the surgery was really easy. The pain was like a dull ache and they keep you medicated so you’re really ok. I was walking laps in the ward the same day and released the next. You can do this!
