  1. I find its much easier and more accurate to used a food scale. I'm 7 months PO and normally measure out between 120 grams - 150 grams of food per meal; however, In saying that it depends on the density of the food I can eat more of some foods than others. 99% of the time I'm lucky to be able to get through 100 grams (3.5 ounces). This morning I had 1/4 cup of oats (over night oats) with 10 grams of Peanut Butter 1 strawberry and 10 grams of blueberries and was able to finish it, however i had the same yesterday and could only finish half. Whatever I'm doing it must be working! I've lost 154 pounds in 7 months! As my dietitian says everyday your restriction will be different, its important not to focus on what others can eat over what you can eat plus if your not throwing up or getting pain it means your not over eating.

Are you a dude? Cuz if so, that sounds low on calories, given the amount you move and exercise. And at that time, 100g of food is just 3 1/2oz or there abouts! 112g=4oz; 140g=5oz etc...So you have quite a bit of restriction. And no wonder you are still losing.

Hopefully some vets will be by to tell you how to go to maintenance. I do know it's a trial and error experimentation thing. If it were me, I'd slowly add in food--maybe start by adding about 250extra cals in the form of dense food such as: avocado, more nuts, full fat cheese, a tsp of butter or oil per meal or so...or add in a couple tbsp of Salad Dressing to a salad. That sort of thing. But I'm not a vet and am still in losing mode at 10.5months.

Edited: DERP I just saw Jenn hopped in to give advice--excellent advice!

Yes I’m a male. Thanks for your advice :) much appreciated

I’m 10 months out and just finished dinner, which was 2 eggs, a slice of American cheese, 3 small sausage links and 1 piece of toast. I was right on the edge of painfully full. This minus the toast is a meal I have eaten at least once a day since July.

Sounds like you are right on track. Keep track of calories and whatever else your nutritionist wants and try to stay within their limits. I’m in the maintenance phase and average around 2k calories a day. If you eat too much you will KNOW. I dry heaved for 30 minutes last night because I ate one strawberry to many.

How many meals do you have a day? Are you maintaining eating this much. I’m trying to maintain however can’t seem to eat the required calories

How much do you move each day--your activity level?

Do you keep those limits cuz that's where you feel fullness?

Are you still actively losing at this threshold? What are the calories/macros broken down on this?

At 7 months is sure seems like you are still consuming a lot of your food with liquids. To me that would go against my doc's wishes. What does your doc say about your plan?

    Congrats on surpassing goal!

    Are you male or female?

I work out 4 times a week and fairly active. I was originally eating 3 meals a day however my weight would t stop coming off so I had to up it. When I say I serve 100-150 gram meal I don’t consume all of that 90% of the time in luck to consume 90-100 grams of food at any one time. Calorie wise even when I was counting last month I was eating roughly 800 calories a day. If I were to eat any less how it would be too much.

  5. Hi all,

I’m currently 7 months post op, and wanting to know what everyone’s meals are like quality and quantity wise this far PO. I believe I’m still eating very small for someone this far out. I’m having 4-5 small meals a day 4-5 ounces roughly 120 grams.

A normal day for me consists of multiple cups of coffee with skim milk 300-500ml of skim milk a day.

Breakfast: Oats with blueberries and strawberry

Mid meal: Protein Shake 20g Protein

Lunch: meat and veggies 100-140 grams (Chicken, Fish, Prawns, Beef tuna etc)

Afternoon tea: 30 grams of nuts

Dinner: Meat and veggies 100-140 grams (Chicken, Fish, Prawns, Beef Tuna etc)

I’ve reached past my goal weight by 10kg so I’m more after the answer as to whether the amount I’m eating is sufficient enough (quantity).

    Cheers.

  6. Hi YandereAngel,

I am currently 7 months Post Operative. The normal day looks like this:

Morning- 2x coffee with 150ml of skim milk

Breakfast- 90 grams of Oats with Strawberry's and Blueberries averaging out to around 5 ounces

Morning tea- Coffee with 100ml of Skim milk

Lunch- 95 Grams of tuna on 2 Vita-Weat biscuits

Afternoon tea Coffee with 100ml of skim milk again and 30 grams of Almonds

    Min afternoon: Protein Shake

Dinner- Normally meat and veggies max 5 ouces per serving.

    I consume around 800-1100 calories a day.

I weigh everything to ensure I'm not eating any more than the required 5 ounces per meal. Some days I have a snack after dinner this is normally a piece of fruit or 5 ounces of yogurt.

I am now at past goal weight so trying to maintain however its easier said than done I'm still losing.

    Hi

I weighed up all the options and i ended up accessing my super. My surgery was $21,000 and so far I have gotten back about $6000 from medicare and i put it back into my super.

I got all the forms i needed from my surgeon in the initial consultation (a centrelink form that you and your GP fill out, and a letter from the surgeon and a letter from your GP), you submit these forms online to centrelink and wait for approval, it takes max 28 days (mine took 34). Once i got the letter from them saying approved I sent that to my Super fund and had the money within 4 days, so was all fairly easy for me. Good luck with it all!

    Hey Josey27,

That's great to hear, I was really worried that it would be a struggle to get it approved. I didn't know you could claim some through Medicare? how does that work? what is the process?

I hope your weight loss journey is going great I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Can I seriously counsel you against accessing your Australian super to pay for your operation?

Seriously, if you take $AUD17000 to $AUD18000 out to cover your op, you will be seriously out of pocket in your retired life.

    1. You will drop your balance by the amount you remove.

    2. You will pay exit/access fees.

    3. Your nest egg will grow for years from a lower base. You will lose, typically three to four and a half times what you access.

    - - -

If you can get a bank loan (or credit union loan) over say four or five years, you will VERY LIKELY be affected less.

You can pay back the loan with your lesser grocery bill! (My weekly spend on food and drink is typically $AUD40 to $AUD55 less since surgery three months ago.)

Talk to your union or financial advisor. Often the clinics will have someone urging you access your super as they do NOT CARE about your future retired income and security.

    Hey Rainbow_Warrior,

I completely understand where your coming from, although the way I see it is I have been working 3 jobs over the past 5 years doing roughly 100-120 hours a fortnight and all of the work I have done my employer had obviously added to my super. I have friends that have been working in the same field for the same length of time that have $10-$15k less then what I do that is why I wasn't worried about accessing my super.

The other thing I considered was a Loan but I have just purchased a property and I'm the only one working so getting a long when I am in debt already seems like to much to control and more hours I would need to work to pay it off. The other thing is the fact that I Can't access my super until I'm 67 it is ridiculous, I have never liked the way the Government has restricted Super hence why I have purchased 2 properties and will purchase more to use as my retirement so I don't get told when I can access it. If I don't get this done I wont live till 67 anyway.

Thanks for your advice it was much appreciated.
