Well today I hit a milestone that I never would have dreamed possible at the beginning of this journey. I am now officially in onederland as I think it’s referred to around here. This also puts me over the 100lb mark of weight loss since surgery as well. I have actually reached a point now where I no longer have a goal weight. I am in the “healthy” or “normal” range for BMI, and my only goal now is to keep working to get my body to where I want it to be strength wise.

Hello, fellow Oct. 2017 slevers! I am down 53.1 pounds from October's 261 now a svelt 207! I like the slower loss, it's a good pace a 'just right' pace if that makes sense. I am doing better headspace-wise, thank god (I don't wish a depression relapse on anyone) My mood is stable and I'm not irritable 'happy Hannah' slowly but surely returns...I can breath better, do more push-ups, sit-ups, ex-ups, wall-sits, squats, burppies etc, per set and not feel exhausted after a workout. I'll update more as I progress.

@Perryman Hi. This process can be discouraging at times. You’re in a valley but there will be more peaks to come. Having had medical issues to deal with, you were laser-focused on what was in front of you. You don’t have a “lame excuse.” You had you’re reality.
You’ve made a step in the right direction simply by sharing where you’re at. And, losing 55 pounds in 6 months is pretty incredible. It’s nearly 10 lbs./month on average. Get your game face on and press on. You’ve got this! 😀🌻🦋

Aww you guys are the best! I feel better after getting IV fluids for 4 hours today, they also have me scheduled to come back tomorrow and Saturday for more fluids in the IV. I will say, that I can tolerate WARM liquids better than room temperature. That was a suggestion from my program coordinator. I find that it doesn’t stick in my esophagus as bad. Also I’m hoping by the time I’m finished with my IV fluids that my stomach swelling will be down enough for me to drink. I also haven’t been able to do the medications as well so I can’t wait to be able to get into those some more. I’m just thankful that my incisions haven’t been that bad! Thanks guys!! 🌟🌟🌟 here’s to positive thinking!

You might be right about the carbs. Focus on the things that are good for you that you like and cook them so they are fabulous. chicken can be made so many ways. Learn to cook like a chef and you will find ways to be very satisfied with food that are good for you so you don’t turn as often to those that are not good for you. There are so many great recipes out there on the web. Try one and see how it goes. Don’t be afraid to step outside the box and try something new. Good luck and stay strong.

I’m sorry you don’t have access to resources and are having a difficult time. Carbs and sweets also make you feel more hungry part of the reason they’re like the devil to me ;) maybe going back to basics and doing Protein drinks.. I really hope you find what will work for you. Best wishes!

Have you considered working with a therapist to address food addiction? And I don’t mean to sound insensitive. I have had to admit that I am a food addict and certain carbs and sweets are triggers for me and will take me back to a place I don’t want to go. While some are lucky and able to eat small quantities of whatever they like that will not work for me and while it’s a hard pill to swollen that’s the reality for me. I can’t eat Pasta, breads or sweets because i won’t be able to stop. I worked quite a bit with a therapist and it was extremely helpful. I hope you find what will work for you so you can have the life you desire.

KatFight reacted to LaLaDee in Can losing weight put you at a higher risk for depression?
I agree with everyone’s comments about the hormones.
I feel like my whole life, I believed things would be perfect if I lost weight or got to a certain size. This isn’t true. I’ve gone from a BMI of 50+ to 29ish, but most of my problems are still the same. It’s not a magic wand. Anyone who had suffered depression has probably dealt with someone telling them to snap out of it. There’s no easy cure for depression. The reality is that I will battle depression and my weight my whole life. They are conditions that you can treat or live with but I don’t think they can be completely solved.
My surgeon mentioned that a lot of people remember the last time they were healthy weight and they think that everything will be the same if they lose weight through surgery. But losing weight won’t make you 20 again. It won’t give you perfect relationships. It doesn’t “fix” everything. If you blamed all your problems on the fact that you were obese, you could be in for a surprise when you’re no longer obese.
If you need help, get it. Surround yourself with caring people. Be kind to yourself.

@cledwards Hi. As you know, any surgery can be terrifying. Like you, I was concerned about leaking. I was worried that my gut would leak and I wouldn’t know it was leaking. And, as a result, I wouldn’t know to get help.
My surgeon, Dr. Gail Wynn in Newark, DE, told me that I would know if I had leakage. Fortunately, I didn’t. There are risks and it’s smart to consider everything before having surgery.
You’ve rec’d some great suggestions about starting with your PCP. An information session may be great to attend just to learn more. I imagine you attended one for your Lap Band.
I was expecting pain similar to a C-section and I was pleasantly surprised when it was much less pain than that. I had no side effects from surgery - trouble swallowing, sore throat, inability to drink Water after (it is hard too get much in at a time initially though), nausea, nor vomiting. I had nausea and extreme fatigue the third week. Probably from low calories.
My abdomen was badly bruised and very sore following surgery. I found an ice pack helped (I have an abdomen-sized one). Had severe gas pain first couple of days. It can travel, I learned and I felt it in my shoulder and back. Awful. Heating pad on that. Used a squishy pillow pushed under my stomach so that I could kind of sleep on my side. I usually sleep on my stomach. A solid pillow is great to take to the hospital on surgery day for the trip home. Press it against your stomach to help reduce pain from bouncing on ride home.
I am so happy I had the sleeve. I’m losing more slowly than some (and one person on the forum was quite rude about my weight loss when I posted my stats per request on an update on December sleevers.) I was 287 at surgery and, now at 6 months, am 218. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis so I have difficulty maintaining my exercise routine.
Anyway...fear is always reduced with knowledge and you came to a good place for that. I have a feeling that you are going to be just fine. 🦋

KatFight got a reaction from Gundy in Food and Liquids Taste Different after Surgery
@Gundy Hi. I experienced the same thing. My daughter made salmon one night and I was just home from surgery. I never minded the smell before but this time I could barely deal with it. It was nauseating. I am ok w it now but wow! And, I love sugar-free popsicles - like James - but they tasted super sweet following surgery. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to have them again.
I am having Popsicles frequently, esp w hot, humid weather here. I really like the Special Edition berry box. I let them melt just enough that they taste like an icee. I also like to drink cranberry-water. 100% cranberry juice mixed with Water & ice. I do a 60/40 roughly. 60 water & ice, 40 cranberry juice. I like Langner’s 100% Plus.
I also really liked large curd cottage cheese after surgery. Not as much now but I thought it was one of the best foods I had following surgery. It tasted delicious.
It’s really interesting what the surgery does to our taste buds. Wishing you well on your bariatric adventure! 😋😝😀

Hi. It’s not uncommon to feel depressed post-surgery or while losing weight. The lifestyle changes and new habits (like not reaching for food to ease emotions) may bring that on. For some people, professional help may be needed.
I’ve struggled with depression for years. My nurse practitioner was on high alert, particularly following surgery, but I’ve been doing well. Eventually (in the long-term), depression may ease greatly.
@Numbheart and @BuzzVSG wishing you all the best. Please reach out if you need to talk with someone about how you’re feeling. 🌻

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot Drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.
I found that solid foods such as chicken and steak were much more difficult to eat than softer foods such as chili and Soups. That is why I relied on them to a greater degree. Also by mixing food groups together and adding spices, they really added flavor back into foods. Anyways I included some recipes at the end of the following article.

I suggest having this discussion with your PCP first. You don't seem to have enough info to make an informed decision at this point. I'd be scared, too if I didn't do the homework. In the end your decision will be based on a rational, educated, calulated risk assessment, and your PCP is your first team member in that process. Everything has pros and cons in relation to your individual health and emotional situation. I wasn't ready for this surgery 5 yrs ago. Today I am ready and have no doubts or misgivings. You can begin by researching gastric sleeve on google. Even watch surgery on youtube. Reading posts here can help, too.
