NegreteLove reacted to orionburn in Able to eat more than I should
This is a myth. The "reset" is to get you back on track with a proper diet. It isn't going to magically make your sleeve smaller. The stretchy part of your stomach is what gets removed. Your new stomach IS supposed to stretch out to an extent over time and you should be able to eat more. You also need to be more specific. What constitues a meal for you? What are you eating? Have you introduced slider foods back into your diet? Is the issue of eating too large of a portion or being able to eat another "meal" 1-2 hours after your last meal? There are key differences here.

I wish I could recall the member that originally posted this, but they put up a picture similar to this. So many people were saying it's impossible to eat all of that being a year out. Actually, it isn't as hard as you think. If you start on the potatoes first I could get all of those down and my chicken and some of the veggies. Now flip that around. If I start on the chicken first I'd likely get some of the veggies or potatoes, but that's it. Why? Because I started with the denser Protein first.

Think of it like this - you're trying to fill a hole with some freshly made cement and some hunks of rock to at as a filler. You can do it two different ways. One way is to pour the cement in first and then throw some chunks of rock into it. The other way is to put all the chunks in first and then pour in the cement. The difference? You'll likely get more of each in by starting with the cement first because it's going to fill all those little voids up. If you started with the rocks the cement may not be able to reach all those little spots or ever reach the bottom. This is a broad overview but do you understand the relationship?

It's important to get a good understanding of slider foods and how they work. It isn't to paint the picture that all slider foods are bad for you. I consider yogurt to be a slider food because it's a liquid at room temperature. It's going to break down and go through your system much faster than 4 oz of chicken.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be snippy. Old habits from forum arguments in the past...lol. Used to get into it with people that would just post a random link as proof. It's frustrating sifting through all the info out there. In the end we have to just figure out what works for us individually.

    Cheers!

My group says that eating less than 1000 calories will set you up to have a starvation metabolism that not only can halt weight loss, but also is correlated with less weight loss, and more weight regain in 10 year studies.....because your metabolism is reset to a sluggish starvation level that works against you when you start eating normally again. You really can't eat 600 calories a day forever without suffering malnutrition eventually.
My group's protocol was developed by a major medical research hospital (University of Michigan) and is being picked up by Ceadars-Sinai and Bethesda naval hospital this year due to it's superior performance in longterm studies and excellent reputation in the Bariatric research community.
There are still old-school doctors who push super low calorie diets post surgically. The weight loss is fast, and people are very happy with fast results. But they often don't last and can result in an unhealthy metabolism that can't handle normal levels of calories later...and eventually result in weight gain.
The newer approach is to advance people to eating normal amounts of calories as soon as possible, so that they have the energy to add exercise and boost their metabolisms into athletic fat burning furnaces that last a lifetime and help them eat sensibly and continue to lose weight.
My doctor: You get one chance to reset your metabolism with this surgery, why would you want to reset it to a starvation level that conserves every calorie?
My nutritionist says that eating under 1000 calories is correlated with more Hair loss, nutrient malabsorption, fatigue and stress. Fatigue and stress trigger cortisol...which again, is contraindicated for weight loss.
Everyone has their own approach to who they trust and why....
A lot of my family is in medicine. I tend to trust the research hospitals and the empirical data of solid studies rather than the hype of clinics that are more interested in making a buck. I'm much more convinced by a collaborative consensus of what provably is healthiest long term and works.
I've been eating 1000-1200 calories since week 3....very comfortably. I'm walking seven miles a day and feel terrific. The scale is moving down about two to three pounds a week and I'm off all my meds.
I am loving this new lifestyle:) And I can live with it long term. And that's really the goal in my mind....the forever habits I can live with.

A "true comment" (in this case a bit extreme) can still carry a lot of judgement!
The bigger problem is creating an atmosphere in which sleevers are afraid to admit to their transgressions and seek support.

NegreteLove reacted to LittleLizzieLilliput in Surgery 12/27 getting nervous
I was a reluctant sleever, It wasn't being done voluntarily really, it was a "Do this or die in 18 months". I was SOO SCARED! I was changing my body and relationship with food permanently. It was very rough. I kept wanting to cancel my surgery. Up until the day before. But I knew I had to do this if I wanted to live to see my family grow up.
So I did it. And then I was miserable for the first 4 weeks. Well, the first 2 were a blur of recovery and focus. But then week 3 & 4 were rough. I had an adjustment stage. Once I got past that....holy cow!!! The whole WORLD opened up for me!!
I weighed 375 lbs when I started this process years ago, I did 16 MONTHS on a liquid diet and lost 125 lbs. I then gained 40% of that back, destroyed my gallbladder and almost died when my gallbladder threw a gallstone, cause a pancreatic attack and I ended up in ICU. I am now able to run, I am working on doing a marathon. A f**king MARATHON! I weighed 375 lbs, I am 5' 1", I wore a size 36 pants. I now wear a size 8.
I regretted my decisions for about 10 days. I would NEVER GO BACK to where I was. Yes, I had regrets, and then I worked through them. And I just kept focusing on the Protocol numbers, My Protein, My Water, My Vitamins, My 10K steps. Those were my daily priorities. By 6 months in I was jogging. I was dating, I was doing things I hadn't done in 2 decades. Now?? OMG I'm planning on traveling next year! I've never traveled outside the US! I'm gonna go on a ZIP LINE!! OMG! I'm gonna ride rollercoasters, I went Ice Skating, I did a wall climb, I am doing bootcamp Yoga daily, I feel AMAZING. I walk past a window and LOVE what I see! OMG I'm so happy. I constantly turn to my side in the mirror and pull up my shirt, astonished to see all my muscles under that skin. I"M SO PROUD!!!
And let's talk loose skin. Ok, so what it looks ugly, I'll tell you the real truth, I was far less attractive and felt far less sexy when I was fat but didn't have lose skin. Now I feel like a model that just has some extra skin. I am so PROUD of that skin! Everytime I look at my hanging stomach I do NOT get discouraged, I get so amazing. That portion of hanging skin used to stick out so far I couldn't see my feet. It would sit on my legs and take up all the space to my knees. Now? I can put a laptop on my lap and work. I don't' have 80lbs of stomach fat sitting on my legs. Do I have arm wings? Yes - and I don't care ONE BIT! I thought I would, at first I did, now I look at it and I think "Damn!! It's all my hard work that has my muscles sticking out more than the hanging skin."
It's all about how you look at it. Sure, I could be miserable cause I have loose skin, but when I look at it I see all my hours and hours of dedication and hard work. I see it as a sign I've done everything I can to turn my life around.
There are always ways you can talk yourself out of something. I always say that people have NO IDEA what they are talking about when they say this surgery is the "easy way out". It's the opposite of that. It's a forever commitment to altering your body. And what makes us heroes, what makes us so god damn badass is that WE DO IT ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!! We are terrified, but we do it anyway. We are scared, but we do it anyway. We want to quit, but we do it anyway. We want to cancel, BUT WE DO IT ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!! Why?? Because we are the heroes of our own story, we are our own saviors, we are the ones on the white horse saving ourselves. I don't care what anyone says, this is the opposite of the Easy Way Out. This is a permanent solution that changes our lives. We are warriors, we are the biggest badasses around. You are going to do AMAZING at this, even though you're scared, even though you are ready to change your mind.
I believe in you. I believe in all of us.

This might be asking a lot but I am pre-op and I am so worried what my stomach will look like after the surgery and weight loss!! I am 5'6 and 244 lbs. I am 28 years old so maybe my body can tighten up over time. I am just so worried what I will look like naked after I loose 100+ lbs. I really don't want plastic surgery or to have to always wear shape wear. If you are willing I would love to see before and after pictures of bare stomach!! Please and thank you!
To start it off I will show my current stomach (so not hot!). Can't wait to share my after pictures!
