I had virtually no preop or postop instructions. I wasn’t even taught how to handle/empty my JP drain after my hospital visit. My surgeons office scheduled me for my first “followup” 6 weeks after my surgery. I called and changed it, because I wasn’t about to have a JP drain for 6 weeks. Indeed, my surgeon gave me no real instructions on postop diet. I had a sheet from a nutritionist that I saw 4 months prior to surgery (I use “saw” loosely, it was done over Skype). I’ve received much better info here than I did from any preop appts (which were just basically a weight check once a month). My surgeon was rated highly online, and I liked him well enough, but the info from his office was pretty light (especially after reading what others have gone through). So, some of this isn’t a “stupidity” issue. I just don’t think people know the difference between what will be a good surgeon/program and what makes for a bad surgeon/program. Had I not found this community, I would have thought my experience was the norm.
This brings up another point. When people on here say “follow your surgeons program” or “have you checked in with your surgeon about X”, they might be doing everything they were told (which is to say, not much).

I'd have the surgery and tell him that he needs to do whatever he needs to do. He doesn't sound like a great person, and once you get yourself where you want to be, you can likely do better.
Don't let him bully you. Do what is best for your health, your goals, and your happiness.

Decided to move into 20:4 to kick into gear since I was doing it wrong for a while, its the quickest way without going full fast.
I have a very busy week where eating is secondary and it seemed like the best time to try the stricter method, but it's a few days no biggie (done it before full fast though... different beast)
No anorexia for me but i do appreciate the concerns, im not willing to damage my body and lose my hair lol when I've lost all the weight I already wanted to, pointless and counterproductive so no high to chase, i feel regular like all my other fasting periods throughout my life.
but I do like the freedom of not constantly worrying/thinking about eating, I do focus on hydration. I think this is a normal/non problematic lifestyle to adapt (hydrating more, eating less) also I think 72 hrs low Protein absorption won't really affect me long term.
Its good to have all the science for any one else who may find the thread in time to come, I'm just chronicling my experience and as technically incorrect as it may be, its a honest one.

let's stop dealing in generalities and put some numbers to this, backed by research.
25% of RNY patients will ever experience dumping syndrome. and of those 25%, most actually LIKE the symptom because it helps them avoid bad food.
whereas 40% of sleeve patients will develop mild to severe GERD that they did not have before surgery. of those, 0% enjoy this symptom and leads to this message board being flooded with posts of sleevers going back to revise to RNY.

Was sleeved on the 5th. Had a couple of tablespoons of turkey cut up really small, couple tablespoons of mashed potatoes and gravy, a teeny little bit of jellied cranberries, a bite or two of green bean casserole, and a bite of stuffing (didn't go down well). And yep, I had about a tablespoon of bread pudding with rum sauce...OMG...(went down very well...but if I'd eaten any more, would have gotten nauseated from the sugar...I played this one pretty slick)
Mostly naughty, I know. LOL. But it's Christmas, and portions were very small. I don't feel bad about it. Fully recognize I can't eat this stuff all the time...just on special occasions.
Also! I walked over 7 miles yesterday, shoveled snow, burned over 3000 calories, and am down half a pound this morning. So, I'm feeling ok about my choices:)

psyance reacted to DeletedAccount in Is eating breakfast important?
Saying you can't draw conclusions from an epidemiological study is hyperbolic. Yes, correlation is not causation, but that doesn't mean that you can't learn something from correlation studies. You absolutely can.
For example, this study doesn't prove that eating Breakfast makes you healthier, but it does prove that skipping breakfast is not a great way to lose weight for most people. Because causation does indicate correlation; if skipping breakfast helped people control their weight, then skipping breakfast would be correlated with lower weights, and it's not. The opposite is true.
The authors found that people who skipped breakfast were more likely to make poor food choices and snack more, which is a fair hypothesis (untested here) for why skipping breakfast doesn't lead to weight loss for most people.
Intermittent fasting is a special case and not what this paper is about. Paleo/crossfit enthusiasts are a tiny subset of the population, and they aren't the focus of this study. Most importantly, they aren't just skipping breakfast - they're making sure not to overcompensate calories later in the day, avoiding all junk food and working out really hard.
I think it's important to understand that 'correlation is not causation' is not a blanket statement meaning that correlation studies are worthless. They aren't.

Don't worry about your calorie levels at this point - lots of people are in that range for a while because that is all that they can get in, and they do well. As long as you are getting in your Protein and fluids, you are good to go. Yes, it is ultimately a calorie in/calories out thing, but short term there are all kinds of things that play with your Water retention/rejection, so that the loss that we see is more stair steps than a consistent, linear loss day to day or week to week.

I’ll throw in. I first tried losing weight at about 18. I dropped over a hundred pounds. But, slowly put it all back on. Did it again in my late twenties (~80lbs) and slowly put it back on. At 34, I got on Phentramine. Dropped 100 lbs. by 40, had put it all back on. I found that during the last time, I had to run every day and keep a ridiculously strict diet (always felt like I was starving) to not gain weight. I injured myself (running 8-10 miles every day) and the weight piled back. I’m hoping this will be the last time I ever have to drop huge amounts of weight. Smaller portions and a size that allows me to stay active without injury. Fingers crossed.
