This is normal. Everyone varies, however, I couldn't eat 50 grams of protein/day till I was about 6 months out. I was tired, too.

    Do you take Iron?

Thank you for responding.. and yes i take 3 Multivitamins a day with Iron the Bariatric Advantage ones. I may need extra iron since I am anemic . Ill ask the doc that when I see him. I will be glad when I can get up and do things like I used to.

  2. I know its only been 2 months since Ive had the duodenal switch surgery plus i had my gall bladder removed and hiatal hernia repaired as well all at one time, but damn I just dont feel 100% better... I am not hungry at all, I hardly eat. I make myself stay hydrated and take my Vitamins of course , ALL of them! Thats a challenge but I Do it!:(

Its definitely a struggle, something I was not prepared for. Although I am losing weight for sure! but I am kind of weak as well during the day... probably because im not getting my Protein in, but like I said its hard to eat... I take 1 or 2 bites and I am full. Everything is tasteless to me too or I do not like it at all. All shakes are so gross to me anymore. Everything I smell cooking makes me walk out of the room because I cant stand the smells! weird huh??

I go see my surgeon on June 5th so I will discuss all of this with him, but I have sent emails to my surgeon's office and described a little of what what was going on and the PA told me that its normal to only be able to eat 2 bites of something and feel full.

I just hate feeling so worn down and definitely don't feel myself. Am I panicking for nothing? Is it way too early after surgery to feel like I should be 100% better? Its not even been 8 weeks.... so I am wondering does it take longer to feel better and normal?

any suggestions would be so helpful. Thanks!

@Glamgirlif you want to add Protein and aren't crazy about shakes (I had to drink one for the first 2 years till I could eat enough Protein but YMMV) have you thought about un jury? (It's one word but when I type it as such it doesn't link to the correct product). I didn't love it but a lot of DSERS I know did and do.

hmmm never heard of it... ill look it up. thanks! i feel i don't like anything right now... its weird but i have no hunger ever and everything to me doesn't tase good. its a struggle for sure

@GlamgirlAt 9 days out liquids are much more important than Protein. (I didn't get to 50 grams of Protein till I was bout 6 months out). Don't worry about the protein that much right now. Concentrate on the liquids to stay hydrated.

Most people do the 30 days = 30 grams, 60 days = 60 grams, etc., model. If you can do that you're ahead of the game.

Thank you I do feel a lot better after you saying that! And yes I do stay hydrated and drink my water!

  5. feeling like you...

ughhh im 5 weeks post op.. and eating is a task for me .. 2 bites and Im full and its not a nice sensation. i wonder when this will end too? Id rather not eat then deal with that hurting feeling i get. Doc says its normal and I take all my Vitamins, but the Protein and Water are still hard for me to get down... i hardly get any protein in.. maybe 30 grams but i know its still so early, so I hope i can get more protein in.. i don't like anything, nothing tastes good and shakes are gross to me. Its a struggle for sure even though i would not change it for anything , I just wish I could get my protein in without it tasting so awful. Good luck to you. It will get better so they say! :)

  6. i think I'm on that same stall... I'm experiencing everything you are as well. Cant hardly eat, when i do its uncomfortable... the scale hasn't moved in a week for me.. not happy about that but i need to drink more Water and get more Protein in... im having a hard time getting 80-100 grams of protein in... that's super hard since I had the duodenal switch. it sucks!! I hope you get over your stall soon!

I had my surgery 3 years ago come this June. Look and feel great in my size 9/10 jeans and medium tops! However, these past 3 days I have been having severe diareah, frothy and yellow in color. Upper part of my abdomen has been feeling gasy and full. I have been trying to drinking more fluids, and cut out any carbs, eating only Protein and veggies. Taking my Vitamins. No fever or feeling ill, but fear something is wrong.

Has any other veterans had this issue?

Hey Glamgirl! This is my first post since surgery on April 18th and I feel like I got run over by a truck. I hope that's normal! I'm exhausted and getting enough liquids is a challenge for sure, especially since I have the dreaded "D" (diarrhea). I'm so glad to hear that you are doing well! I keep telling myself it will get better!!

oh wow how did your surgery go? I know it does feel like we got ran over by a truck for sure!!! It's A LOT! im at day 21 and now I cant seem to get any food down even though I start soft foods today. its like I don't want anything. I am going to try and now I gotta start the Vitamins so im hoping i feel better and get some energy once they get into my system. The liquids are very hard to get down... so yeah thats normal... I am just now getting mine down comfortably... well Water only.

  9. Hi all!
Ok, so I am 2 weeks & 2 days out from VSG & am struggling... Regret has crossed my mind every day since surgery
Unlike many of my fellow sleevers, I experienced significant pain following surgery, which was the first hurdle that I dragged myself over, along with being able to take in the minimum liquids to go home.
Over the first week the pain subsided & the liquids got easier, but then bring on puréed food stage.
I am constantly bloated & feel like I am going to pop, after only having taken in 1 Tablespoon of Purée. This then makes it extremely difficult to get the fluids in between. So much so that I feel like I am forcing fluids in & only managing 2 meals (if you can call a tablespoon a meal!) per day, instead of the recommended 5-6.
Am I doing something wrong? I am so scared of creating a leak, due to feeling so full with air/food/liquid (whatever it is!)...
Has anyone else experienced this & does life get better???
    TIA!

Same here! I’m struggling too just like you kinda in the same time frame as you too, well I’m on week 4 post op. It’s very hard, I pray it gets easier for us

  10. Day 19 Post Op, feeling better , losing weight everyday about 1-2 lbs a day it varies sometimes only 1 pound a day. im down about 35 lbs so far :)

I went to my soft foods class yesterday! Yay! I will be able to start eating softer foods but honestly i have no appetite at all. I am trying to get my Protein as much as I can and stay hydrated as well. my tummy is still tender but no pain really. I am taking it easy. My surgeon says I am not cleared to do any long road trips yet. boo!

But I am now starting my bariatric Vitamins. Got all those yesterday too. :) got some protein wafers too. yum.

Anyone on soft food stage? and if you are , what are you eating?

Thanks @Glamgirl....my surgeon concurs it’s the most successful ... congrats to you... I’m looking forward to a speedy recovery too.. post op any pain or drains in place? Are you still on liquids or graduate to puréed? Thanks again

hello Diva302, I had pains the first week. just very hard to get up , but I walk as much as I could . No drains. the laparoscopic incisions were vey small and practically are gone now :) I am on puree foods but not hungry at all. I go to soft food class tomorrow and see what else I can eat. The liquids sucked but it was all part of it to deal with. Not only did I have the Duodenal switch but I had my gall bladder removed and a hiatal hernia repaired. so three operations were done that day and that could be why I am was extra sore.

You will do fine! Its all worth it!!! I wish for you a speedy recovery! let me know if you have any more questions

So, im undecided which surgery I should do gastric sleeve or duodenal switch. I had done a lot of research on the sleeve even bought a huge book on the sleeve almost done reading it all but now I kinda want the DS. At my consultation they did recommend the DS for me because I’m diabetic. I’m just so scared cause it is more invasive. The sleeve isn’t. Also, with the DS your less likely to gain your weight back. So that sounds good to me. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

hi there! I just had the duodenal switch 2 1/2 weeks ago. my surgeon told me this was the best operation for me and that is the most successful one. He says I will be in a size 6 before I know it! :)

So far I have had no complications, I am losing about 1- 2 lbs a day . I am feeling better now. First week was rough. I still cant lift anything or do anything strenuous yet. Good luck to you in whatever decision you make! If you have any questions on the duodenal switch ask me anytime!
