    Sent home after 7 hours!

I came home from the hospital 10 pounds over my surgery weight. It took about a week for the fluids to come off. I agree with others, don’t weigh yet!

    weight gain directly after surger

Normal. I came out of the hospital a whole 10 pounds heavier than when I went in. It’s scientifically impossible to gain fat on 600 calories a day, don’t stress.

    STOP MAKING EXCUSES

Well he has said he doesn’t have much luck with the ladies. The problem is that he thinks it was because he was fat, when in reality it’s because he has a terrible personality.

    Surgery wound weeping?

I had one that would leak when I was more active. I’d watch for spreading redness around the incision, otherwise it should heal up soon. Mine only lasted about 3 weeks I think?

    VSG PostOp Bad Experience

I didn’t have a leak, just a GI bleed. They never found out where I was bleeding from because it had stopped by the time they got me into emergency surgery. I did have a full liter of blood in my abdominal cavity that had to be suctioned out, however. I received 2 bags of blood as well and felt much better. My biggest symptom was blacking out when moving from a chair to bed, walking to the bathroom, etc. My blood pressure was very low and my heart rate was around 140 lying in bed. I was very short of breath when lying down too. It felt like my lungs couldn’t expand fully. The doctor immediately ordered a CT which showed all the blood where it was not supposed to be. It all came on fairly quickly. I was drinking fluids and walking a ton immediately post-op. I felt great. Then when I got up to go to the bathroom in the evening I fainted. I was sleeved in the US. My doctor said his bleed rate is about .02 percent, so extremely rare.

    Balancing calories with exercise

Thank you guys! This is sort of in line with what I was thinking. I felt like I’ve eaten a ton today but when I tracked I was still well within my macros and calories.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery is it painful?

I had almost no pain, and I had to be opened a second time at 24 hours post op for a bleed. Recovery was super easy, I was just exhausted for about 3 weeks.

    Hospital transportation

I took a car service to the hospital because I had to be there so early and have young kids. My husband and kids came to pick me up on discharge. They weren’t even allowed to come inside due to COVID. I walked out with a nurse to the main entrance, got in, and we left. She asked no questions and there was nothing for my husband to sign.

    VSG PostOp Bad Experience

Wow, I’m so sorry. I also had internal bleeding (sleeved 6/2). My doc immediately called for a CT after I passed out from low blood pressure and was tachycardic. Between sending you home after that and not realizing that leg pain could be a clot, it sounds like your team really dropped the ball. I hope you start to feel better quickly and regain your strength.

    Pickles

It just depends on your surgeon. I’m 5 weeks out and have them finely chopped in tuna salad.

    June 2020 surgeries

I’m 5 weeks post op today. I lost zero pounds week 3 and 4, which was discouraging but I anticipated happening. Down 4 this morning so I think my stall has broken! Down 34 total and feeling really great.

When did you get back to exercise?

I’d argue it’s not even motivation. Motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what gets you to your goals. Doing what you need to do even when you don’t feel like it.

When did you get back to exercise?

I’m 4 weeks out and the doctor has given me the ok to go back to cardio and strength training. This is really the first week I would’ve felt ok to do so anyway, clearance or not.
  15. I think there’s a misconception that the sleeve and bypass or DS give wildly different weight loss outcomes. I think my surgeon said it’s only about a 5% difference. I know plenty of people who have lost over 100 lbs with the sleeve. Anecdotally, I started at 288 with a goal of 160. I’m 35 lbs down at 4 weeks.
  16. Do you struggle with reflux currently? If so bypass might be a better option. I had mild reflux so I decided to go with the sleeve. Zero reflux since I had it done a month ago. Dumping was a consideration for me too. I personally wanted to live my life having a slice of cake on my birthday or a cookie with my kids from time to time. Some people feel like they need the strictness of bypass that will never allow them to eat certain foods again. Malabsorption was a factor for me as well. FWIW, obviously I don’t know your friend, but I’d guess it wasn’t the sleeve that failed her. Slider foods, grazing all day, heavy carbs, etc. will definitely stall your progress and cause regain. My head hunger is for sure still there. It’s a lot of work! (I hope that doesn’t sound like I’m judgmental of her. I get it.)

    Pain Medication

It seems like there should be a responsible way for them to prescribe narcotics. My surgeon’s policy is to write a prescription for 8 oxycodone on discharge. He did that for me and I only ended up using 3. I agree that I would talk to your primary about some pain meds. I didn’t have a lot of pain, but I struggled to sleep early on because I was uncomfortable.

    What's Normal!?

I’d stick with the liquid diet. It doesn’t sound like you’re getting much protein? I was doing mostly protein shakes on liquid, plus unflavored protein powder mixed into strained cream soups. 60 grams of protein per day was the goal from my nutritionist.

    DON'T DO IT

The risk of gastric leak is around 1 in every 200 surgeries. Patients are explained the risks. I signed a paper before being wheeled back acknowledging that I realized I could have complications and potentially die. I did end up with a massive GI bleed and the beginning of sepsis. Would do it again.

    June Sleevers Post Op

Do not stress about the weight. I gained 9 pounds the two days I was in the hospital! It was for sure the extra fluids and swelling. It took a week to drop off and then I lost 12 pounds the second week.

    DON'T DO IT

I’m so sorry you and your wife have been through so much turmoil. I also had a serious complication, although it was resolved much quicker than hers. I do think it’s unfair to tell people not to go through with surgery because of the risk of complications. The risk is always there, but it’s very low. People should always be aware of the risks though, so thank you for sharing your story. I hope your wife makes a full recovery soon.

    June 2020 surgeries

It is! It took me a week to get back to my surgery day weight, then I lost 12 pounds week 2. 😮

    June Sleevers Post Op

It’s only a bad habit if you’re eating mindlessly. If you’re truly hungry and it fits in your calories, it really doesn’t matter what time of day you’re eating!

Thank you! I mistakenly felt like once I was off painkillers I would be fine, but that's clearly not the case.

    June Sleevers Post Op

I’m 3 weeks post-op, which has honestly flown by. About 4 days ago I started getting some left side abdominal pain that was wrapping around to my lower back. It got to the point where it was pretty painful. I’ve been irrationally petrified of a leak, so I stressed myself out like crazy. I finally called my surgeon this morning but had to wait quite awhile to get a call back since he was in surgery. In the meantime I started to think about the last time I had a BM and realized I couldn’t really remember. Took some milk of magnesia and got things moving... pain totally gone. I was losing sleep over the possibility of a leak and just needed to poop. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I can’t wait to have a better understanding of how my new insides work. Everything still feels so new.
